Have I REALLY miscarried?

Hi all -
Went to the doc on Friday for an early ultrasound (just at 7 weeks), and she told us the baby had stopped growing at 6 weeks and there wasn't a heartbeat. She said we would likely miscarry naturally in the next month. Can this really be true? I've had some spotting off and on over the last 2 weeks, and I guess my pregnancy symptoms are lessening. Not sure because I didn't have many symptoms to begin with. It just seems so unreal. How can the doc know for sure when it's so early? Can she really tell that it stopped growing just a few days ago?

I feel like until I physically miscarry I will be holding on to a shred of hope. But is it even worth it to hope, or will it make things more emotionally painful? I don't like having to wait to find out for sure. Grrr... Going through the anger/sadness/hope cycle over and over really sucks.
