Vitamin B-12 May Prevent Birth Defects
Women of childbearing age (especially those who are pregnant or trying to conceive) are advised to eat 400 mg of folic acid (folate) daily to prevent neural tube defects, such as spina bifida, from occurring in their babies. New research shows that vitamin B12 may also play a role.

If your periods are highly irregular, you may not be ovulating or your ovulation might be very irregular. Ovulation usually occurs about 14 days before the first day of your period...the days before that are usually what is irregular. Some women ovulate on day 9 of their cycle, and others ovulate on day 14 (if they have a normal 28 day cycle) and others ovulate very late. The doctor can prescribe you Clomid or other medications that will help your body ovulate. My cousin used Vitex to help her cycles regulate and they worked for her. Making your body ovulate is relatively easy with medications if you determine that you aren't ovulating. I would follow the doctor's instructions but track your cycle once you get off of birth control pills. You will be able to tell from your charts/tests if you do ovulate or not.

I remember when we first started trying to have a baby hearing that it takes most people anywhere between 3 months to 12 months to get pregnant! I used to think that waiting 12 whole months would be unbearable! I now wish it has taken us 12 months haha - funny how perspective changes with time.

I know that a lot of people get pregnant when they first get off the pill while others take more time. I would research different ways of finding out if you are ovulating (tracking basal body temperatures, using ovulation predictor kits) so that as soon as you are ready to get off the pill, you can start tracking your cycle. If you find that you aren't ovulating once you are off the pill, the doctor can fix that pretty easily with medication.

Best of luck to you!

Well I guess I should start off by telling you all some basic information about myself. I'm 20 years old. I have hypothyroidism and took the depo shot for 2 years. My last shot was September...so almost a year ago this upcoming September. My boyfriend & I decided in March to start trying to get pregnant. And when it didn't happen immediately I thought maybe my thyroid was off. So we went to the doctor. I told her I stopped taking my birth control pill in March. And she tells me that it usually takes people a year to start ovulating again after the shot. So she put me back on my birth control pill...she said I had a better chance of ovulating coming off of a pill. She also gave got me taking prenatal vitamins. This past Tuesday she checked my thyroid to make sure that wasn't the problem & it is normal. The only thing she found was my vitamin D was really low. So now I have to take those as well. If it takes a year normally to get out of your system.....by September or October I can stop taking my birth control pills & start trying again....but what are the chances it will take longer. I think Im just over think it & being a little impatient. Any advice would be appreciated
