Are Your Spending Habits Healthy?

Quiz written by Stepfanie Romine, Staff Writer There's no doubt about it—money does affect your health. So are you financially fit? To find out, pick the answer (scenario) that most closely matches your own habits and perceptions of money.

  At the grocery store, you…
Buy what looks good. Whether it's packaged, frozen, or from the prepared food bar, it lands in your cart.
Buy what's on sale and some favorites. You price compare but mostly stick to brands you know and like.
Stick to your budget and detailed list. Coupon organizer in hand, you know exactly what's on sale.

Payday! You just got your paycheck. The first thing you do after work is:
Pay your bills and buy necessities, put money into savings, then splurge (just a little) on yourself.
Hit the mall! You'll pay your bills with credit cards if you run out of money.
Repay debt, pay bills, buy necessities and then you spend on day-to-day life.

What do you think of credit cards?
I use credit cards in a pinch, but I try to pay more than the minimum balance.
I use them to earn things like points and cash back, but I never carry a balance.
They're great! I can buy whatever I want and pay for it later when I get a better job.

You really want to splurge on a vacation next summer. How do you pay for it?
I'll dive into my vacation fund. I set aside a little money each month for my annual vacation.
I'll use my savings to pay for the plane ticket, and rely on my credit card if the trip gets too expensive.
I'll whip out my handy-dandy credit card. Life's too short to miss out on traveling.

  Do you use coupons?
Sometimes. When I find them and remember to bring them with me, I'll use them.
Almost always! I clip coupons, hunt for them online, and wait for double coupon days to maximize my savings.
No. Coupons are way too much hassle, and don't save you much in the end.

You bought a new bathroom rug on sale, but it doesn't match as well as you hoped. What do you do?
Throw it in the linen closet and forget about it. It wasn't that much money.
Make a mental note to return it to the store the next time you go shopping.
Immediately return it to the store. You, of course, have the original packaging and receipt.

What is your general attitude toward money?
I have enough for your bills and get by, but I'd like to have more.
I'm pretty comfortable— not rich—but I responsibly manage the income I have.
Easy come, easy go. I never have enough.

It's the end of the month. When you pull out your checkbook, it's…
In decent shape. You don’t balance it, but you compare it to your account statement.
Missing. And you're pretty sure you're about to overdraw your account…again.
Perfectly balanced. You record every purchase, ATM withdrawal and check you write.

What do you most often do for lunch?
I meet a friend or some co-workers at a restaurant. We love to scout out new places.
I brown bag it. Why spend $6 on a sandwich you can make at home for less than $2?
I bring leftovers to save money, but co-workers often persuade me to join them for a sandwich.

Bonus! You just received your income tax refund. What will you spend it on?
Clothes and fancy toys for the kids, then student loan or credit card debt.
Savings, of course!
A day at the golf course or the spa, then a fancy dinner with friends!
