Bought a prenatal yoga video on Amazon and it arrived Friday. I was able to do about 30 minutes of the 60 minute video before stopping, so I was pretty proud of myself. It was very challenging. I chose the Kundalini prenatal yoga, because I have been practicing Kundalini yoga for about 5 years. I was surprised by how sore I was when I woke up Saturday! I'm only 7 weeks along, there were ladies on the video who must have been 39 weeks, they looked about ready to go, so I know this is something I can do later in my pregnancy. Along with getting the benefits of stretching my muscles, I think yoga gives me a great mental space with meditation in which to relax and allay my pregnancy fears. As they said on the tape, calm Mammas are good mammas!
Then yesterday, a long-time friend of mine who teaches yoga and is certified in prenatal yoga came over and gave me a private lesson with tips and some modifications for postures as I get further along. I loved visiting with her and getting some really good advice. She's never had kids but she is a wonderful, dedicated yogini and I think she had some very positive things to teach me about my own body and mindset.
One of the things we discussed was my fear about the pain of labor and the difficult time I will have in delivery. She was quick to point out that if we set up in our minds that something will be painful or difficult, chances are good that our bodies will respond by clinching up, tensing and doing exactly the opposite of what we want them to do! So I'm really working on maintaining a positive outlook on my labor and realizing that sure, there will be discomfort, but I can start now by learning to deal with that discomfort by not clinching up and freaking out but by relaxing and adjusting to the pain. I want to have a good, positive, mentally relaxed outlook when I go in!
