The challenge this week is to give the series of abdominal exercises featured at the links below a try. These exercises focus on the lower abs, the area that is important for providing support to your low back. There are two options for doing the exercises, the first link shows the exercises without modification for the first trimester and postpartum. The second link shows them with modifications for after the first trimester (to avoid having you lay flat on your back.). Let me know how you do! The challenge for this week is to add some strength training to your routine. Babyfit has some great strength training videos and I've added the link below. If you haven't been doing any strength training then set a goal to add at least 4 upper body exercises to help prepare your body for all the lifting you'll need to do with a new baby! This week's challenge is to beat the heat! With temperatures hitting all time highs this summer here are a few tips to keep you exercising safely. -Check your local weather's heat index rating. It's a combination of temperature and humidity levels and a better measure of determining whether exercising outdoors is safe. Here's a link where you can calculate your location daily heat index: http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/html/ heatindex.shtml -Switch out your cardio to an indoor air conditioned gym, your home or try swimming instead of your usual outdoor run or walk. -Schedule your outdoor workout for early morning or later afternoon/evening when the temperature and sun exposure are less. -Shade can make a big difference in how hot your core becomes when exercising outdoors, so change your run, walk or bike to a shady trail if possible. -Set up your outdoor exercise route to include some stops in A/C stores or restaurants. Just a few minutes of cool air and a cold drink can reduce your core temperature quickly. -Freeze some water in the bottom of your water bottle so your hydration stays cool during your workout. -Wear clothing that allows airflow and wicks sweat away from the body. I love the sun protection shirts-give your UVA/UVB protection and amazingly keep your upper body cool. Always wear a hat and sunscreen to protect your skin. -If you become overheated stop exercising immediately and go to a cool environment. Sip cool water and if available, run your wrists under cold water for several minutes. If you feel dizzy, nauseous, light headed and weak get medical attention immediately. Summer is a great time for exercising outside as long as you pay attention to the temperature and humidity, and listen to your body's signals! Cathy

The challenge for this week is to add some time to your workout. If you currently do 20 minutes of cardio, try adding a few minutes and see how you feel. Remember, you can always break up your routine into two workouts if that feels better for you. Let me know how you added some time to your workout this week! Cathy
