""There haven't been set guidelines regarding abdominal strength training exercise during pregnancy, but there are some general tips that I feel should be followed.
-Traditional "sit ups" become increasingly ineffective during pregnancy because the growth of the baby cause the recti muscle attachment at the middle of your body to thin and widen to accommodate your baby's growth. To compensate for this normal physical change you recruit other muscles groups (like low back) to make the movement.

Here's a link to more effective prenatal ab exercises. These exercises target the lower abs as well as other core muscles groups without putting stress on your low back and tummy midline.

One other point-avoid doing back lying (supine) exercises after your first trimester. Laying for an extended period of time on your back can cause the weight of the baby to compress a blood vessel in your abdomen. You may become light headed and dizzy if that happens.
