"While moms have an increased need for nutrients such as calcium, folic acid and iron, there isn't an increased need for calories until the second trimester. Using a nutrition tracker and making smart choices can help you maintain your calories while meeting the increased key nutrient needs that can help also limit first trimester weight gain." -- TANYA_BABYFIT - 3/21/2012 11:35:08 AM

"I understand from articles that you should not gain more than 3 pounds during your 1st trimester but this seems a bit impossible if it is your first pregnancy. Is it common to gain 5-10lbs and does that mean you are tracking to gain too much right off the start?" -- MEGZE36 - 3/20/2012 8:46:48 PM

"Thank you for this honest, reasonable and straightforward article. I was underweight with my first pregnancy and gained 10 pounds in my first trimester, but this was just y body getting to a healthy weight quickly in response to pregnancy and I tapered off in the second and third trimester at a pound a week and gained about 25-30 pounds in total." -- NAOMILS - 3/12/2012 1:06:28 PM

"I have gestational diabetes too, for the 2nd time around. Babyfit has REALLY helped me to balance my diet and keep my sugars under control. Right now what's working are meals with 70-100 gm carbohydrates, and snacks in between about 30 gm apiece, for a total of 250-300 carbs a day. Eating 65-80 gms each day of fats and proteins completes my caloric needs and keeps me from being hungry. Thank you Babyfit!!!" -- KCLUDWIG - 9/27/2011 1:28:20 PM

"Thanks for posting this article! Most articles speak to limiting pregnancy weight gain--an ever-present concern. I have a normal BMI, yet gained 10 lb in my first trimester (little or no morning sickness). That was alarming! I'm tring my best but it doesn't seem to working. At times I feel tempted not to eat anything because it has become so frustrating!! "I've lost about 5 lbs so far. I am 8 weeks. I haven't thrown up, but I have extreme nausea. I have a hard time eating protein and veggies (which I normally love, and eat lots of ) I definitely don't get my protein in for the day. I end up eating only 1400 to 1700 cal. a day. "This is baby number 3 for me. My first (I was mid 20's) I gained 9kg in total and watched everyting that went past my lips. My son was born 6 weeks prem weighing 5lb 5oz. I gained another 3kg after the birth and could never seem to get rid of it. Baby number two (I was 35) I had managed to lose 15kg just before falling prgnant and only gained 5kg altogether. Again the baby was 5 weeks early for no apparent reason, 5lb 9oz, and I gained 5kg of weight after the birth that had not gone by the time I fell pregnant this time. Baby number three, I am 14 1/2 weeks and have lost 5kg! Talk about weird. I am not interested in food at all and have had reasonably bad sickness. My midwife has told me not to worry about not eating much as the body asks for what it needs. She used the example of women in third world countries who still manage to give birth to full term babies with little or no nutrients. Listen to your body and go with it. I've found each pregnancy is differnt in what happens food wise. Just enjoy the journey." -- CANCER37 - 6/15/2009 10:41:15 PM

"I have eaten more Whoppers and Arby's in the last few weeks than in my entire life!! I am 18 weeks and have horrendous "morning sickness" from 6pm - 11pm. All I can do is make it home, take a cool shower and pass out on the bed... I thought this was supposed to go away after the 3rd month! LOL - My Dr says maybe it'll last the whole time... "Dear Shavar, You have support here. Your baby will get the nutrients from what you eat, i think they get it before you do, so everything you eat goes to them first. that made me feel better. In addition to eating on a budget, you are not alone. millions of people struggle to eat as cheap as they can because of finances. I have a suggestion, take for example the price of a frozen dinner, aproximately 2 dollars, you can take that two dollars and buy a bunch of bananas, a healthy choince and somewhat filling, pair it with a peanutbutter sandwich or toast and PB and you have a full meal (whole wheat of cours) that cost about 3 dollars. This was a project done by a student at my college. She wanted to eat healthier but thought she couldn't afford to so she took what she spent on junk food and found items that were healthy that had the same or similar price tag. I hope you find this response helpful. Just remember all the power you need to succeed is in the thoughts you have in your own mind. Positive thinking leads to positive results. "I am in my 17th week of my first pregnancy. I was overweight as a teenager. I lost my weight and got down to a healthy 130. I was scared when I found out I was pregnant that I would gain alot of weight, but I exercise for 45 minutes a day, and I eat when I am hungry, but it is what you eat that makes the difference. "This is my first pregnancy. I am 26 years old and currently 18 weeks pregnant. I weighed between 125-127 before my pregnancy and now weigh between 116-117. I've been sick from the first day of pregnancy and continue to be. I have not had much of an appetite and barely can eat or drink fluids. I try, but it makes me even more sick. I have'nt begun to excercise, because I don't have the energy. I realize the importance of "eating enough during pregnancy", but still have a hard time. "I was a runner before I was pregnant (about 110 lbs at 5'3") and when I got the first trimester naseau, I stopped exercising regularly. I was at 130 by the end of my first trimester, but then it stopped and I've been at about 132 my entire second trimester. "I'm 30 weeks and my pre-pregnancy weight was 105lbs at 4'10". My last check up which was three weeks ago put me at 118lbs which means I've only gained 13lbs. My doctore said he isn't worried because the baby is the size she is supposed to be and since I'm still young (19) my metablosim is now working overtime to accomadte the extra eating I've been doing. "Im 27 weeks tomorrow, and my pre pregnancy weight was 105 (5'3"), Im now 109 lbs, but this was last checked almost a month ago. So 4 lbs Ive gained in Offically 24 weeks. My Dr hasnt said anything about my weight gain. With my first pregnancy (pre pregnancy weight 98lbs) I gained 30 lbs. I dont feel like overeating or eating very much, nothing appeals to me and when I do eat I dont feel very well. I do eat and I do eat healthy, just not so much (less then pre-pregnancy). But I cant believe Ive only gained 4lbs? My chest alone looks 4 lbs bigger. My belly is huge, much bigger then it was with my 1st pregnancy at the same point, and my 1st was 9lbs 2onz. "You are gaining at a good rate but being sure you are nutrient rich is also important. Try using the food tracker for a few days to see that you are meeting your calorie and nutrient needs. After you find a day where you have met your needs write down the number of fruit, veggie, bread, milk and meat servings that includes. You can then use those numbers to keep track with "tick" marks so that you are monitoring a little easier then logging on the tracker daily." -- TANYA_BABYFIT - 1/20/2007 8:21:26 PM

"i`m 24 weeks pregnant with my baby number one and it`s very important for me to eat healthily. I know a lot about healthy eating as I`m a dietician. I`ve gained only 2.5 kilograms so far and my baby`s developing perfectly all right. But the thing is I watch what I eat, write down daily amounts of calories and key nutrients and plan my meals very carefully. It`s not about me, it`s about the health of my baby. That`s why I often resign on `fave` foods, like chocolate or similar but not always. The most important in healthy eating is not only knowledge but...sanity. "I'm overweight to begin with, by almost 100 lbs from previous health problems. I'm having twins. My doctor said that she would only like to see me gain 20 lbs max. At first, I thought this was going to be extremely hard. I'm 23 weeks now, and I've only gained 2 lbs. I make sure I get enough of everything, but I'm not anal retentive about what I eat. My first trimester, I lost 15 lbs. Since then, I've only gained back two. I was worried about this and asked my docter the next time I saw her. She said that it is not necessary to GAIN weight, just as long as the babies get enough nutrients. So don't stress on the LBS... stress on how healthy your baby is going to be.
