"UMMMUJAHIDA: The number of shellfish servings recommended per week is in the article." -- KGNELSON2 - 4/21/2010 10:27:03 AM
"Viewpoints on fish in pregnancy vary around the world. Japanese women will laugh at you if you tell them they can't eat sushi! Their rule is, "only eat sushi from reputable establishments." Well-trained sushi chefs will recognize parasites that could be (but are unlikely to be) encountered in sushi-grade raw fish. They also must follow strict cleanliness guidelines in their preparation of sushi. Your risk of bacterial poisoning is much greater from eating sliced deli meat! Avoid the tuna roll and you'll be fine." -- LOCATELLI.JELLY - 4/21/2010 7:32:50 AM
"Be careful with the fish oil supplements. My doctor's office said not to take them while pregnant and to take the other form of DHA which is not derived from fish (other form is found in prenatal vitamins) while pregnant because of the mercury/toxins. I believe you can eat two 5oz. servings of fish per week... definitely check it out with your doctor. Also, nuts, beans and tofu (extra firm is best) are good meat substitutes. Good luck! I know that I find it ironic that I have been craving sushi too ever since I got pregnant!" -- CYNTHIAESPINAL - 10/18/2009 9:58:20 AM
"Can someone tell me what to do? I'm 13 weeks pregnant and all I'm craving is seafood! I've developed an aversion to chicken and red meat (beef/lamb), but force myself to eat it sometimes because I'm afraid of harming my baby. Can someone tell me how many servings of seafood I can have per week? I will really appreciate it, thanks!" -- UMMMUJAHIDA - 6/8/2009 7:51:25 PM
"I believe raw fish is a no no for pregnant women because it may contain parasites or bacteria. You can eat some kinds of sushi that are cooked, like unagi, but remember to check that the fish/seafood does not contain high levels of mercury. You can download a Seafood watch card from the Monterey Bay Aquarium website that will tell you what fish are safe to eat. They have info for all regions in the US.

TITANSFAN_83, I take fish oil capsules everyday. The oil is orange flavored but you can't even taste that. It really tastes like nothing. If you are worries ask what the stores return policy before purchasing. Usually Whole Foods, Wild Oats, and similar natural foods stores have pretty good return policies. Make sure you get a brand that has been tested for contaminants. Also, make sure you get fish oil not cod live oil as cod liver oil is high in Vitamin A, which you shouldn't get to much of when pregnant." -- HAPACHIK - 4/22/2009 11:19:17 AM
"Could someone tell me what about raw fish? I really enjoy eating sushi once in a while but since I got pregnant I have heard some stories about raw fish and I'm scare to eat it, so is it true that we shouldn't be eating raw fish?" -- CAROFON36 - 4/21/2009 8:46:05 AM
"You can try keeping the pills in the freezer and taking it first thing in the morning before breakfast so it goes into the gastric system immediately.

Other sources include:
* Nuts and seeds, such as walnuts, ground flaxseed, flaxseed oil
* Canola and soybean oils
* Check into a maternal DHA supplement.

"Could someone tell me if the fish oil capsules leave an aftertaste. I can't eat shellfish and don't care for fish. My DR told me that I need to eat or take something with omega 3. Any suggestions." -- TITANSFAN_83 - 2/27/2009 6:43:24 AM
"About fish oil supplements, there are fish oil supplements made specifically for when you're pregnant. One brand is One A Day Woman's Prenatal DHA/EPA Supplement. Which contains sardine and anchovy as well as soy." -- CNCBARNES - 2/20/2009 4:00:51 PM
"Thank you for this article it helps to know that others know that consuming any farmed fish is not good. I do however disagree with your comment on Tuna. Tuna that is caught in the Pacific ocean by
USA commercial boats is not high in mercury. We have done many tests and the average size USA caught tuna is very safe. I whole heartedly hope readers will use this advice. " buy WILD USA caught and processed seafood" it goes through the highest degree of tests and care. Not to mention you are supporting the USA. Thanks" -- BEKKIROO - 10/18/2008 8:31:39 PM
"FIsh Oil supplements can be questionable if you can't clarify the source since their sources could be from fish high in mercury content which could be harmful during pregnancy. Talk to your doc to see if ExpectaŽ LIPILŽ which is a DHA supplement especially for pregnant and nursing moms would be a good option for you.

"What about taking fish oil supplements? I stopped taking them before I got pregnant and am now four weeks pregnant. I am concerned because I know Omega 3 deficencies can lead to depression (to which I am vulnerable), and I am worried about post-partum depression." -- KERRYLUS - 4/21/2008 11:27:00 AM
"When in doubt, avoiding the questionable food until your baby arrives is the best idea." -- TANYA_BABYFIT - 4/21/2008 9:06:31 AM
"Is it ok to eat octopus?. My concern is the mercury." -- VLOPEZV - 4/21/2008 8:26:52 AM
"Sushi is totally fine to eat, so long as it's not raw! Watch out for Salmon & anything funky. Imitation crab isn't good because of the sorbitol. Your best bet is a roll that has cooked shrimp in it, like tempura rolls, and even the vegetarian rolls. It's not exactly the same, but at least it's something! =)" -- GENALEE27 - 2/21/2008 11:33:43 AM
"Is it possible to eat ANY sushi while pregnant? What if you know it is good quality? PLEASE oh please!" -- NEWMOMMA07 - 10/18/2007 1:36:04 PM
"Check out Oceans Alive. They maintain a list of fish that is good for you (low in contaminants) and good for the environment (sustainably raised or harvested). http://www.oceansalive.org/eat.cfm

"Ever since I found out I was pregnant, I cut back on my fish consumption. But for a few months before that I found out I was pregnant, I was eating raw tuna, salmon and shrimp every Wednesday night. Probably a bit more than the recommended amounts. I am so worried that I have too much mercury inside of me. Is this something i should lose sleep over?" -- JOEMISA - 11/7/2006 2:12:33 AM
"Commercially fished salmon may be safer in some ways but don't we need to consider the effects that commerical fishing is having on fish stocks worldwide? Just thinking about oneself would be no good for anybody's, most importantly, our children's health as overfishing will make them unable to eat wish in the future. I'd say we should very carefuly consider the environmental consequences of what we eat, and go for farmed rather than commercially caught fish (calling for better farming standards!!). We should avoid altogether the deep sea fish and little researched species, as well as marlin -- but consult internet for more knowledge, e.g. http://www.greenpeace.org.uk/ocean

"Sardines are a safe fish for pregnancy and a great source of calcium. You will still want to limit your total fish consumption as outlined in this article due to the mercury risks. You should speak with your child's physician regarding fish recommendations due to the risk of mercury. Their recommendations for a safe amount to eat will be less because of their lower body weight and caution should be used.

"Is it safe to eat clams and muscles? What about shrimp? I am about 11 weeks along. Is it better to wait until after the first trimester or does it matter?" -- SUGARPOT90 - 7/21/2006 3:20:07 PM
"What about Chilean Sea Bass? Is that safe to eat while breastfeeding? How much of the mercury is passed through breastmilk? What about sushi?
Thanks,
Marianne" -- MEVANSYFIB - 5/8/2006 7:43:29 PM
