Vitamin B-12 May Prevent Birth Defects
Women of childbearing age (especially those who are pregnant or trying to conceive) are advised to eat 400 mg of folic acid (folate) daily to prevent neural tube defects, such as spina bifida, from occurring in their babies. New research shows that vitamin B12 may also play a role.

"We went on a 3 day backpacking trip in my second trimester. When I looked/asked about information on how much weight was safe to carry, I got results from all ends of the spectrum, ranging from 5lbs to 35 lbs. I ended up carrying my pack w/just our clothes and one sleeping bag, my husband carried the rest. It was perfect. We had a great time. My husband was a trooper, we had to do a river crossing which was swift and about thigh deep. He made 4 trips across, escorting both dogs and taking both of our packs. It was great fun. FYI, dont forget how slow you have to go when planning your day hikes and return trip out. There was a lot of stopping for food, water and a few Braxton Hicks from time to time. We gave ourselves plenty of time to enjoy the trail and hike out. Be sure to treat yourself to a nice nap in the grass each day and the trip will be so much more fun, as sleeping on the ground can be hard to do for long periods of time. My nights were cut short from back discomfort, but I made up for it during my relaxing naps. Enjoy!" -- MPDONALDSON2 - 9/15/2010 11:02:16 AM
"I can't wait to get to hiking this summer just found out im pregnant so it should be extra fun need the extra exercise though!" -- MOMOFLAD - 1/8/2009 6:07:56 AM
"My obstetrician recommended packs less than 25 lbs after 1st trimester. Wear sturdy hiking shoes to minimize falls, and ankle injuries. Hiking poles helped me a lot with balance.
The hikes in 9th month were mostly local, with good access and possible evacuation in case of injury." -- OUTDOORSYGAL - 9/14/2008 2:17:00 PM
"I've hiked long distances throughout my pregnancy and felt fantastic. At 5.5 months I was hiking 10 miles per day, in Grand Canyon. My last camping trip was at 38 weeks and had a blast. Slept on a cot under the stars. I delivered on my due date, and labor was short and uneventful. My baby is really calm and healthy and already enjoying the outdoors." -- OUTDOORSYGAL - 9/14/2008 2:11:24 PM
"I have found that hiking every weekend in my last trimester very enjoyable. I feel so strong, healthy and ready for labor." -- LISA-ANNE - 8/26/2007 8:45:50 PM
"Being in AZ - and loving to hike and camp... I'm concerned with the heat and how much is too much. That info would be helpful...." -- RACHELMARIE777 - 6/18/2007 4:27:22 PM

"Your article did not address how far into the pregnancy it is safe to hike. Somehow I don't think the altitude changes and rigors of hiking can possible be safe in the 3rd trimester when just climbing stairs can feel like climbing a mountain. Plus coming back down can be treacherous enough when you are not pregnant let alone with the different center of gravity a huge belly creates. There is an increased risk for falls and injuries. As an Chiropractor and an avid hiker (before pregnancy) who is now 9 months pregnant I think you should have gone more into the limitations of each trimester because some will try it and may end up getting injured or sick." -- MOMDELAIN44 - 3/19/2007 12:17:47 PM
"Can anyone help determine what kind of pack weight is reasonable if I'm at 15 weeks, and an experienced hiker/packer?

Would 25 - 30 lbs be safe, if I were to take several rests along the trail? More? Less?" -- LADYOFTHELAKES - 6/19/2006 9:51:11 AM
