"During my first pregnancy being already overweight I didn't want to gain a lot more weight. However, I did. I ended gaining 50 pounds but as soon as I had my son within 2 months I cut half of that and even more by 4 months. This time I don't want to gain 50 pounds. I know exactly what I did wrong the last time. I made horrible food choices, and ate whatever I wanted.. This time I will still make sure I eat but I want to make much more healthier choices and exercise!!!" -- MISSCASSIE23 - 1/14/2013 9:21:56 PM
"I don't agree with gaining only 15 pounds. My OB even said that was ridiculous and far fetched, and that it would only stress the mom-to-be out more. He just told me to eat healthier, exercise at LEAST 15 minutes a day with light aerobics like swimming or walking, and do NOT count calories. I gained 39 lb and it was all gone in 2 weeks while I haven't even been able to exercise. I'm 4.5 weeks pp and I'm already below my starting pre-pregnancy weight. =]" -- MERSADYSW - 1/1/2013 11:17:34 AM
"My ob gyn told me NOT to count calories as part of eating healthy. He said to just make healthier food choices, exercise, and do NOT cut calories. All 4 of my children were perfectly healthy, and I was able to drop the weight within a few months after birth." -- PAMJANAKES - 12/31/2012 8:17:16 PM
"According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, there are significant risks associated with obesity and pregnancy. Therefore in 1990, the Institute of Medicine did a literature review and developed weight gain guidelines for pregnant women based on body mass index. Measuring BMI is used to determine pregnancy weight gain, but it is not accurate to use during pregnancy. Pregnancy weight gain should be based on a woman's height and pre-pregnancy weight, thus improving the pregnancy outcome for mom and baby. Such tailored recommendations decrease the risk of excessive postpartum weight retention, low birth weight infant, large birth weight infant, and reduce an infant's risk of chronic disease as an adult. You can find more detailed information in our BMI, Weight Gain and Pregnancy: An Explanation." -- TANYA_BABYFIT - 11/9/2012 11:05:02 AM
"I agree w/ the previous poster that said the caloric recommendations are irresponsible. I understand watching what one eats to prevent too much weight gain, but I was eating 1500-1800 cal along with an moderate exercise plan to *lose* weight after my first child and I lost *70 lbs* with that plan.

And I also agree that it flies in the face of the caloric recommendations given to me by the food tracker provided by this very site, which is much higher than stated in the article for my 185#, 5' 8"ish frame. I think it's best that I stick strictly to my doctor's advice on proper weight gain." -- FRODOTHESMURF - 11/8/2012 4:51:30 PM
"Since every woman and every pregnancy is unique, you and your physician should discuss specific weight gain guidelines and expectations. In order to maintain a controlled 15 pounds weight gain, most overweight women (at the time of pregnancy) will need to limit caloric intake." -- TANYA_BABYFIT - 11/7/2012 8:37:50 AM
"Telling a pregnant woman, no matter what her size, that she should eat 1500-1700 calories is just plain irresponsible. This could easily lead to starvation mode, not to mention detoxing, which is NOT healthy during pregnancy. How can you say NOT to diet, and then say eating 1500 calories is enough? I highly question the science behind this. Do you have documentation for research on this subject? Why does your nutrition tracker suggest 2200-2500 calories without consideration of weight?" -- IMJENCASE - 11/5/2012 9:53:17 PM
"Keep your weight gain within a healthy range during pregnancy by working with a dietitian or certified diabetes educator to follow a carbohydrate-controlled diet, which will keep your blood sugars in control.

This carbohydrate chart for diabetics can help you learn more about managing carbs and proper portions." -- TANYA_BABYFIT - 8/29/2012 11:38:26 AM
"Hello everyone im 35 and i just found out im 5weeks pregnant. My last two pregnancies i had gestational diabetes i got up too 280lbs from original weight 210lbs. I really want to watch my weight and not get gestational this time." -- TUESDAYFT - 8/29/2012 7:10:50 AM
"With my second pregnancy I weighed 220 at conception and gained 40 lbs. Fortunately, I had no complications with my pregnancy. With this pregnancy I am 202 as of last week's prenatal visit. I think the biggest thing is staying active, listening to your body and making every effort to eat as healthy as possible. Ok so I had three chicken nuggets & french fries the other day. Not the best choice, but I sure did go on a long walk! It is all about finding a balance and NOT beating yourself up! Stay active, stay motivated (even when you need a nap) stay positive!!!!" -- YUQIYU44 - 8/16/2012 1:39:58 PM
"I was 275lbs when I was pregnant... (Yes! 275lbs!!)
Thankfully, I lost a little weight (10lbs) through the course of the pregnancy. Even at 265, I had ZERO complications and DD was perfect. (I'm 33 yrs old, 5'7)
Weight can be stressful, but try to remember what a beautiful experience pregnancy is and ENJOY IT, ENJOY IT, ENJOY IT!

One more thing, get a Dr. who is supportive and uplifting.
I had the BEST Dr!!! I actually looked forward to every apt.
She never criticized me! She was sweet and made me excited to be a Mommy. Ditch your Dr. if they can't do the same! There are too many out there to settle for one who isn't a good fit.
Don't stress!!! Eat right and exercise!" -- DDUNHAM23 - 7/5/2012 1:11:05 PM
"When I got pregnant I weighed 220 lbs. I was scared to death that something might happen to my baby because of my weight. I want to give my baby the best chance at life. I was 23 yrs old. I was given the name of a dr. who was of course a gynacoloergist (? not the best speller)

He was an excellant dr. in his field but after I left my appt. I was a little teary eyed . The subject of weight was certainly discussed and what he said left a huge impact on me, I wanted to be the best mom from the moment of fertilization, but reality hit me hard when he said that he didnt want me to gain much weight period. It was than he said something which I still remember vividly to this day. BOTH YOU AND YOUR CHILD NEED ONLY 1 QUART OF MILK DAILY TO PROVIDE ALL THE NUTRIENTS YOU AND YOUR BABY NEED TO BE HEALTHY, I was determined I would do whatever I needed to have a healthy bouncing little bundle of joy! My little bundle of joy was a baby boy who weighed in at 7lbs 1oz. Mommy weighed herself a few days layer, I weighed 25lbs less than the day I got pregnant. I felt wonderful, happy and full of energy. His advise about the quart of milk stuck with me during my next pergnancy too. I did have a balanced diet (not just milk). My boys are now 39 and 34 God Bless" -- TULOOKIN - 3/29/2012 12:56:45 AM

"I have gained 30 pounds and I am now 35 weeks and 1 day and I'm holding steady rite now. I am on bed rest due to a fall on Halloween and that has decreased my walking . I feel that I am not on the same track as I was and feel like I am failing. The only thing that reminds me that it is not due to failure is my Knee that still really hurts but cant get treated till after the baby. I pray for no complications. I still try to stretch at home, lightly." -- NEWBABYCEJA - 11/27/2011 10:28:18 PM
"That option allows you to set up how much weight gain your medical provider recommends for you during pregnancy instead of having the program calculate it. Weight loss during pregnancy is not recommended but some medical providers suggest a small weight gain instead. If you have a suggested weight gain that you would like to enter, you will need to re-set your goals (click on Account Settings on your start page, then reset goals)." -- TANYA_BABYFIT - 7/31/2011 1:40:10 PM
"When setting up my account there was an option to record how much weight the Dr. was limiting you to during the pregnancy. It would be nice it it included a dr. who wanted you to LOSE or GAIN weight, how much etc. Also, how do we get back to putting in that option if we skipped it?" -- S1LKYPEACH - 7/31/2011 9:56:12 AM

"Please contact your medical provider and varify the instruction as weight loss is not recommended during pregnancy. Be sure the instruction was not to gain more than 10 pounds which would be inline with obstetric guidelines. Use the information on page two of this article and the nutrition tracker to help you monitor intake for key nutrients." -- TANYA_BABYFIT - 3/29/2011 9:15:34 AM
"ive just found out that im pregnant with my third child and my doctor has told me that i need to loss 10kg if i want to give birth in my home town otherwise i will have to travel about 40 mins away to have my child. he has told me to exercise by walking and to eat correctly. does anybody have any ideas or examples of diets that have worked during pregnancy? i need help..." -- RACH862009 - 3/28/2011 10:13:04 PM
"Hi - I just found out i was pregnant a week ago...I'm 28 and I'm 5'5"..i weighed my self last friday and i was 193 lbs which is considered OBESE for my height...I weighed myself today and I'm 198.4 lbs...I was flippin out...I have not been eating out of the norm and i have been drinking a lot of water....according to my calculations I am only 5 weeks 5 days pregnant....Why would I have gained so much weight in 1 week??? Any ideas?" -- MZSOSA - 2/18/2011 11:01:19 AM
"I am obese. I have been with my last 3 pregnancies. My dr. never commented much on my weight, I gained around 30 lbs with each of the last 3. My dr. has moved now though, and I am afraid any new dr. I go to will give me a bad time about my weight. I want to only gain the 15 recommended pounds, but not sure I can keep it to that, since I never have before." -- UTMOM5 - 2/10/2011 1:30:52 PM
"This is my 4th pregnancy. I have been obese before all of them, and with the previous 3 I gained 45 lbs each pregnancy. After my first baby I lost 30 lbs before becoming pregnant again, and with the other 2 I have lost it all within 3-9 months. My doctor has not been concerned, because otherwise I have been healthy.

Despite this being the 'official' recommendation, don't stress...15 lbs? That's the total weight of your baby, amniotic fluid, blood volume, and breast weight increase. It essentially means that your body should not add ANY maternal fat stores...which is ridiculous. Your body is going to want to put on extra. Eat healthfully and exercise moderately and your body will put on what it should." -- ROSEBRIARS - 1/24/2011 2:27:06 PM
"Hey, I spoke to my doctor about my weight gain, and she is not worried. However, she did send me to a dietitian... but this lady told me everything I already knew. I think I should try and meet with another dietitian." -- CASHTON83 - 1/9/2011 1:12:48 PM
"Talk with your medical provider to see if it is possible to meet with a Registered Dietitian for some meal planning advice as well." -- TANYA_BABYFIT - 12/22/2010 1:29:50 PM
"My pre preg weight was 203, and Im 5'5... considered obese. I am finding it extremely hard to limit my weight gain to only 15 lbs. I am 20 weeks along and I have gained 12 lbs already. I think it is stressful to worry about weight gain during pregnancy. My activity has totally changed since I became pregnant. I went from active to sedentary. Currently I eat about 2100 calories a day. I will try decreasing my calories to 1800 and increasing my activity. Any advice would be great! I have already read a million articles, .. I'm just looking to see if anyone else is individually struggling." -- CASHTON83 - 12/21/2010 9:03:08 PM
"You add that weight from your typical pre-pregnancy weight for an overall weight gain target." -- TANYA_BABYFIT - 7/6/2010 10:01:51 AM
"So at the beginning of my pregnancy I started with weighing 170. I'm 21 and 5'5, so I am a little overweight for my age and height. I am almost done with my first trimester and I now weigh 157-158 from being sick and not being able to eat as much and I also exercise every day doing low impact Aerobic Classes. So my question is, if I should only gain 15-20 pounds, does that mean I add it to the weight I started out with or the weight I am now?" -- NEENIEBEE - 7/4/2010 4:06:53 PM
"Everyone should talk with their medical provider about what an appropriate weight gain would be. It typically can be very safe to limit gains during pregnancy but intentionally losing weight even when eating healthy and being active is not advised." -- TANYA_BABYFIT - 7/4/2010 3:24:03 PM
"I was 16 stones when I became pregnant with my first baby. In the first three months I inexplicably lost half a stone! No diet, eating regularly, healthily (with treats!) I then steadily gained another stone so at my biggest was 16 & a half stones, just before baby was due. Gave birth to an 8 pound 13 ounce baby daughter. I got out of hospital two days later weighing in at 15 stones! Having a baby was the best diet ever :) My friend who like me had a BMI of 34 experienced the same kind of weight loss whilst pregnant - however she has put the weight back on & more afterwards. If you're already large framed don't panic about an initial weight loss, but speak to your GP if concerned." -- LOVELYRUTHIE - 7/4/2010 5:31:04 AM
"
I have 7 weeks along- lost about a pound- but starting this pregnancy even heavier then last one! :-(
WIth my DD i started at 225 ( why did i gain 25lbs before getting pregnant- no idea ) and went up to 255- normal weight gain had i not been Obese... But then after the baby- from some pills i was taking to help me make more breastmilk ( i think ) i went up to 267!~
Now my DD is 11 months, and im only managed to get down to 247!
I know they say weight gain is normal- but i really dont think my body can handle being that heavy.

Did anyone else loose weight pregnant?

PS: Dragonmoon- good job!" -- MANDARZ - 6/28/2010 11:23:33 PM

"Hello,
I do have a question... Is it okay to lose weight if you are ocverweight and pregnant? I am eating healthy and regularly exercising. Iweighed myself this morning and I was 2 pounds lighter, yet I gained inches in my waist and my bust. Any helpful advice would really be appreciated, thanks!" -- 1_BLESSED_MOMMA - 6/14/2010 12:34:05 PM
"I just want to say that I think it's FINE for SPYNGIRL to count calories to stay within a healthy range! In fact, if more women would do this, less would gain 50-70 pounds in their pregnancies! And about these guidelines - I think they are bang on. I never used to be overweight, but I gained 22 pounds while on fertility treatments - my body would not loose weight even when I counted calories and amped up the exercise even more intensely because I had hormonal problems, and the fertility treatments were trying to correct them. So now, I am overweight. Well, I have been eating in the around 1500-1700 calories as this shows, and I'm almost done the first trimester (one more week to go), and guess what? I've only gained 4 pounds. And at least two of those pounds were gained while going nuts eating during the Christmas season! By focusing on both the calories suggested here AND the recommended food groups, I'm never excessively hungry. It's working. And given that I know people who were overweight and somehow still gained 15 pounds in the first trimester, I consider this a victory :)

I will keep you posted on how eating in this range works for me over the next two trimesters :) But so far, things are looking good!" -- ALLFORBABIES - 2/12/2010 8:36:58 AM

I'm a little afraid on putting more weight on.. I now weigh 143lbs.. and I'm scared on how much I will weigh in the end.. only because it's suppose to be harder to lose in the end for your second baby.

"I just recently found out that I am pregnant (4 weeks along) and am happy but I am also at my highest weight ever. I have went from 164 this time last year to 190 (i'm 5'9) because of massive over eating due to the stress of starting a new business. I am thinking of counting calories and doing maybe about 1900-2000 a day so that I do not gain too much while pregnant. This year I would say my average daily calorie intake was around 4000 calories a day (how else do you can gain 26 pounds in a year!) so I think I may lose some weight in the first trimester but not in an unhealthy way. I am so scared to get any bigger than I already am." -- SPAYNEGIRL - 1/25/2010 3:03:37 PM

"I didn't gain the 20 lbs that is "normal" for a pregnancy. My weight went from about 212 at 6 wks to 222. At my 2 wk post-partum appt, my weight was just under 200 lbs. My regular prenatal care provider was concerned about the lack of weight gain, but perinatologist who was doing regular ultrasounds to track my baby's growth wasn't concerned about my weight because the baby was growing at a healthy rate and developing properly. Because of the constant monitoring, I stopped worrying about the scale (not enough weight gain, too much weight gain...) and focused on eating for my baby's development.

My diet did change quite a bit. My normal crutch foods (including chocolate) gave me heartburn from hell and I felt like I was choking down what food I could eat. Because eating felt like a chore, I made sure that every calorie counted. My DH had gastric bypass surgery before my pregnancy & I started following the the advice that he was given to make sure that I was getting adequate nutrition even if I was having problems eating much." -- DRAGONMOON - 1/11/2010 2:50:59 AM

"Hi Everyone,

I'm 4 weeks pregnant and my due date is 8th September 2010. I'm 43 on 31st January this year and this will be my first child. I'm relatively fit and healthy, but I'm scared stiff.

I'm concerned about my post Christmas weight! I'm 14st since I put on about 5lbs over the festive period and would like to lose that and more. I'm doing the Rosemary Conley diet and fitness programme and had lost a stone (14lb) just before Christmas.

I would like to lose another 3sts. My question is this, can I carry on with the RC programme so I continue to lose weight or should I be happy to continue going so that I at least, keep my pregnancy weight gain to 15lbs as your site recommends?

Any advice anyone can offer to an overweight, older mother-to-be like myself will be greatly appreciated.

Angel" -- ANGEL4343 - 1/4/2010 8:50:50 AM
"Well this is my 3rd pregnancy...although looks can be decieving, the only place there seems to be excess weight is my bottom LOL! No complaints from the husband :) But I am in the "obese" category :(

I am currently 5 weeks pregnant, I have two older children (9 and 4), both are boys...sorta hoping for a girl this go around but happy either way, as long as the baby is healthy.

Weight gain is a major concern of mine! The caloric suggestions on here for the obese women are right on with what my doctor's office recommended! And considering both prior pregnancies were high risk (one due to pre-term labor at 4months until 8 months, having my oldest son one month early and my having placenta previa with my second at 2months until weeks before my due date...) I wouldn't imagine my doctor giving me ANY inaccurate info or misleading info that would cause any additional problems with any of my pregnancies!

Although it is ALWAYS best to talk with your doctor about these types of decisions, I just wanted to give other women looking for answers them peace of mind that this info is extremely accurate :)

"Love how they don't comment on those of us that dropped 20lbs the first trimester due to morning sickness. No wonder my doc didn't say anything about weight gain and even said I was OK to lose weight as long as I didn't get dehydrated." -- LADAMEBLANC2 - 10/31/2009 7:15:55 PM
"Please note that this recommendation is for those woman that have been advised to limit their weight gain or who have a BMI that puts them in an 'obese' category that indicates need to limit weight gain. If this is not your situation, please decline these recommendations in favor of your specialized Babyfit calculated guidelines or your medical providers recommendations." -- TANYA_BABYFIT - 10/17/2009 3:17:34 PM
"Sorry, 1500-1700 calories a day to only gain 15 lbs? I came here from Sparkpeople. You know, the dieting site? My caloric goal there was 1500-1800/day. I was LOSING 2 pounds a week on that, even without the energy demands of baking a baby! I have a hard time viewing this recommendation as anything but dangerous." -- BETHTHECAT - 10/16/2009 5:25:38 PM
"I am so happy to see this article and all the users comments. I am almost 35 weeks and have almost gained a whole 2 lbs!! With my 1st & 2nd pregnancies, I gained between 30-35 lbs each leaving me with a BMI of 28. Even with my dr. and family assuring me baby is active and that I have no reason to worry over my lack of weight gain, I still do. It's just not normal for me to come out of pregnancy skinnier than when I went in! Anyways, reading how others have gained almost nothing, some even lost weight and still had a healthy baby. I think I can put my mind at ease and actually enjoy these last 5 weeks. So thank you all for sharing your story. You've helped me out so much!" -- CHRISSY47170 - 9/28/2009 10:25:26 AM
"going into my 3rd trimester i had only gained 25 pounds ... however i was placed on bed rest due to pre term labor and medication that keeps me knocked out almost 24/7 ... for from my happy only 25 pound weight gain ... now i'm almost 32 weeks and have almost hit my 50 pound mark!!!! i'm so upset because i dont eat bad at all ... and i drink almost 2 gallons of water a day ... my dr said i'm really swollen because of the medication and being on bed rest ... and that the weight will melt off after i have that baby .... only 4 more weeks of this medication to stop my contractions ... i'm sure my daughter will some soon after ... she's already impatient like her mom ...

so to keep myself sane i've been coming up with my plan of action when i get the okay from my dr to start exercising ... and with breastfeeding and continuing to eat balanced meals i'm giving myself 3-4 months to lose the weight i've gained ... i know i can do it because i've always been an avid exerciser (lol)

so my advice is control your weight as much as you can in the beginning, and WALK WALK WALK ... just be sure to pay attention to your body ... if you're tired stop ... take a nap ... do what your body is telling you to do ... you never know what the 3rd trimester holds ... i hope none of you have to go on bed rest ... it's miserable ...

good luck new moms and moms to be!!!!

"I gained 30 lb. and lost 15 in the first 2 weeks, my baby is now 3 months and I still have 15 lb. I exercise though my the whole pregnancy, until the last day. I been working out and eating right, curse I'm trying to eat more calories because I'm breast feeding. I'm a little desapointed because I have not lost more weight. Is it because is to early, or what is going on?" -- NELLYSA - 9/1/2009 6:44:22 AM
"I ate very well, no refined carbohydrates and followed the pyramid except for the baked rice pudding which i craved yet gained 48lbs in my first pregnancy, gave birth to a healthy 9lb 7oz boy lost all the gain in a short time, then gained 24lb in 9months breastfeeding when I let it all go and just ate what was near me! Now had just got back to where I'd started, well nearly, and I'm craving the pudding again! I've got to me more careful this time I think! maybe I'll try and limit the pudding to once a week!" -- SARAH0 - 8/30/2009 4:38:17 PM
"I lost 30lbs just in order to get myself to a more manageable weight. I'm still "obese" but the doctor told me it would be okay to proceed as long as I didn't gain ANY weight! It will be a major challenge but I think I can do it if I keep active (not crazy) and be very strict about portion size and such that I can do this." -- DANIGIRL42 - 8/19/2009 10:06:47 PM
"I gained 40 pounds with the first baby and was categorized as obese before I got pregnant. Luckily I was able to loose that weight plus an extra 15 pounds and am now only overweight, now pregnant with the second baby. I am really trying to watch what I eat and weigh in everyday to keep things in perspective." -- HAYDENMAMA - 7/21/2009 12:53:40 PM
"i just had a baby three months ago but suprizingly i just found out i was pregnant again how can i keep at a healthy weight with all the baby fat from the first" -- BAMBERS - 7/17/2009 10:58:14 PM
"I gained 60 lbs with my daughter. I had about 10 lbs to lose to begin with so when I had the baby I was stuck with a 70 lb. weight loss challenge. I don't recommend this. It was hard. I only lost 45 lbs. before getting pregnant with my second child and now am really watching my intake so that I don't have to struggle so hard with the weight loss after this baby is born. If you do find yourself with a lot of weight to lose, I found that weight watchers was the most practical way to lose it. It takes discipline, but it is doable and you don't have to buy their foods. They have a plan for nursing mom's too which is a help." -- SJC2575 - 7/6/2009 1:54:49 PM
"I gained 38lbs with my first pregnancy, was already significantly overweight when I started, and was still carrying 15 of the 38lbs when I conceived #2. I learned my lesson the first time around, and was absolutely determined that I was not going to exceed my highest weight ever (which is where I was at the end of my 1st pregnancy). Now, I am at 37 weeks, and have only gained 14 lbs. I am a champion "weight gainer", so this has not been easy. I thought I would share some things that worked for me:

1. I took the guidelines for weight gain in the 1st & 2nd trimesters seriously. Realistically, to get the extra calories I needed in the first trimester, I just needed 1 additional serving of dairy a day. Otherwise, it was business as usual. So... I added a cup of lowfat yogurt to the mix, and that did the trick.

2. I identified my biggest "weakness" foods and seriously limited the amount I allowed myself to have. For example, pizza is a MONSTROUS craving food for me. During my first pregnancy, I think I had pizza at least 2 times a week during the 2nd trimester (yikes!)!! This time, I only allowed myself to have pizza once every 2 weeks, and gave it up entirely during lent.

3. I packed my lunch and plenty of snacks, and only allowed myself to eat what was in my lunch bag (most of the time, at least).

4. I kept a food log. I searched the web and found a website that allows you to enter what you eat in a day & tells you if you're hitting your target. The challenge was finding a site that takes your pregnant state into account (most of them are geared toward weight loss; not weight gain!). The one I used was www.nutrimirror.com. It's free, it allows you to enter your food, and you can keep track of other health information (blood pressure, heart rate, body measurements, etc.).

By doing these 4 things, I went into my 3rd trimester not having gained very much at all (somewhere around 8-9lbs). Baby was healthy, I wasn't swelling (I looked like a small blimp the first time) or experiencing any major discomfort, and I had enough wiggle room to let myself eat whatever I felt like when I started getting good and hungry!! It hasn't been the perfect pregnancy, but my doctor and I have both been very pleased with my weight gain. I hope someone out there finds this helpful.

Good luck!!" -- MRSC101902 - 7/6/2009 11:07:45 AM
"I am pregnant with twins. First pregnancy and have gain 3 kilos in the first trimester. Just wondering if anyone out there could advise on weight gain for twins and if a lot came in the 1st trimester." -- LIZBRANDT - 7/6/2009 9:54:41 AM
"I had gained 35 lbs. I had watched everything I had eaten. Most of the weight I gained was water weight. Within the first three weeks of having my baby I dropped the 35 lbs I had gained during pregnancy." -- BROOKIE101 - 7/4/2009 2:30:07 PM
"I'm about 27 weeks and on my last visit my doctor said I'm gaining too much (averaging 2lbs a week and I'm 37yo), I'm exercising a minimum of 5 days a week and a minimum of 30 minutes each time but usually I exercise at least 45 to 60 minutes both cardio & weights. I thought I was exercising well and eating healthy but I guess not. Pre-pregnancy my BMI was 26 but I've already gained well over 25lbs, now what? This is my first pregnancy so I'm clueless. What if we've already gained too much? Of course now i'm on vacation so eating healthy is even harder but I'm still exercising, hopefully it will pay off after baby arrives along with BFing." -- ROBSGAL - 7/4/2009 10:24:50 AM
"I am 9 weeks pregnant with bub number 2, and have not been able to shed the extra 7kilos (15lbs) from my last bub. My bmi is 26.1, so I'm only just past that 'overweight' classification, but I certainly don't want to hold onto another 7kilos this time around! So far have not gained any weight, which is great because with my first, I was so hungry I gained 3kgs (8lbs) in the first trimester! Will see how it goes, and am aiming for 12kilos (25lbs) this time around." -- AMYPRATT - 7/4/2009 8:14:48 AM
"I had my son 8 weeks ago today, I am obese and had gained only 3 lbs during pregnancy which the doctor and myself were glad. After I had him it was an added bonus that breastfeeding burns so many calories........I lost 28 lbs within 3-4 weeks." -- PVCHICK - 7/4/2009 5:35:27 AM

"Thank you adies for sharing. I am 4 weeks and am definitely overweight from my first child. I am quite afraid of gaining any weight but have promised myself that I would follow a extra healthy diet. With my daughter I didn't gain much for the first 2 trimesters for the most part. I could only eat fruit and vegetables overall. The smell of meat made me so sick. She is now three and loves fruits and vegetables raw just like I used to eat duiring my pregnancy." -- MDMOHAMED - 3/10/2009 2:36:42 AM

I still haven't lost 15lbs from his pregnancy and now I'm pregnant again. I'm afraid after this pregnancy I'll have Gage's 15lbs in addition to the weight from this one. Any suggestions to keep from gaining alot of weight. I gained 44lbs with Gage." -- FIRESTONE23 - 2/8/2009 10:07:35 AM
"HI Ladies,

I started off my pregnancy with a few extra kilos & I was adamant that I was not going to balloon or use my pregnancy as an excuse to just let myself go. So, instead I took my pregnancy as a blessing in disguise as the most important thing is my baby so I wanted to make sure everything I ate was not only beneficial for her but for me too. This in turn has helped me over the last 32weeks transform my way of thinking about food & what has taken yrs to change (food habits) has now been done in 32weeks! I was very active pre-pregnancy & let me tell you choosing to continue to exercise throughout my pregnancy has been one of the best decisions I've made. It has helped me stay strong, maintain a healthy weight gain & I can still wear non-maternity clothes, I've just gone up a size or two in regular clothes (14-16 Australian sizes).

If I can recommend anything to you it is this fabulous workout DVD suitable for beginners to advanced from 8wks-40wks called PreggieBellies. Not sure if you can get it in the states as it is an Australian compilation but boy is it a work out and it really, really is very good. It has been designed by physiotherapists and has been endorsed and approved by Australian obstetricians as been the best exercise program to incorporate into a pregnancy. Go onto the website have a look and read all about it! And best of all it can be used post-natal as well!!

Enjoy your pregnancy ladies in whatever form they take, it'll all be worth it in the end :)" -- VANESSA83 - 1/27/2009 7:37:03 PM

"I am 20 weeks pregnant and have lost 15 pounds. In my last pregnancy, I only gained a total of 4 pounds, all of which being in the last 2 weeks of pregnancy due to swelling and water retention. I constantly get fussed at by my doctor about weight loss, and even being overweight, he still recommends 25-35 pounds in order to ensure a healthy baby." -- JENNY70503 - 1/5/2009 12:06:58 PM

"I'm not a doctor, nurse, nutritionist, etc. But I am an overweight mom. I think too much focus is put on numbers and not enough on women's individual bodies, what they are actually eating and how they are exercising. My own OB/GYN gave me a stern lecture about my weight gain (16 lbs. at 30weeks w/ #3) without even asking about my diet and activities! Each woman is different, each pregnancy is different and each baby is different. I'm soo glad some study, association, medical professional, whatever... can dictate what I'm supossed to do and make me feel guilty rather than giving reccomendations to the doctors on how to work with patients as the individuals they are. If my doctor had bothered to ask, I could have told him I eat fresh fruits and vegetables, fat-free dairy, whole grains and lean protiens and walk two miles a day. Instead he told me to lay off the ice cream! I don't count calories, I count the size and amount of servings I eat and make sure the ingredients I use are as fresh and healthy as possible. It's more important that my baby has the best nutrients I can give her rather than watch the numbers on a scale. Once she's born I can diet and excersise myself silly, right now I'm busy growing a human being! Like someone said earlier, we should be celebrating the lives we are creating, not stressing about calories." -- ANGEL101798 - 1/1/2009 4:50:31 PM
"this is my first pregnacy of the 5 that I have been over weight. Of the four the least I have gained was around 20- 25 lbs. I'm not sure how I manged that with my 3rd but with my 1st and 2nd I gained over 40 lbs, my 4th I gained 30 lbs. How are you supposed to only gain 15-25 lbs.? I'm not sure how to do that, any ideas?" -- RGOODY6 - 12/31/2008 6:11:26 PM
"My start weight was 177,I'm 5'5". That made my BMI 29.9 right on the edge of being considered obese??? However I dont think BMI calculations consider women who are possibly made up of more muscle than others. No one who saw me at 177 would ever even guess I weighed that much as I am very athletic and I'm mostly muscle (underneath a l nice winter layer of fat...lol So far I have put on 26lbs through my whole pregnancy. I have 6 weeks to go at this point. I ate well and I'm still working hard to keep my gain between 25 and 30lbs. I am also still very active and on the go with my job. MY OB says baby is growing fine and seems very healthy. I would say to women it is more important to listen to your OB as if there is anything concerning with your weight they are going to know and advise better than any article you may read." -- FIRSTIMEMOM209 - 12/31/2008 10:09:49 AM
"We encourage all women to follow their medical providers recommendations for weight gain as well as recommended calorie intake during pregnancy since they know your specific medical and pregnancy history best. Our calculations and recommendations are based on sound research and medical community recommendations but are certainly general and do not replace your medical providers specific recommendations.

"I've seen 5 doctors already as at my doctor's office they work on a rotation and all have said to watch my weight but not to restrict myself to just 15lbs weight gain.

This article was most likely written by someone that isn't overweight themselves. And I agree that the calorie intake is too low.

The way that I watch myself is by restricting my carb and sweets intake so as not to get diabetes, drink plenty of water, and have the recommended serving of fruit and vegetables every day. And I walk every day. But I'm not going to focus on just gaining 15lbs. There's no need for that kind of stress right now." -- TWINKY101 - 12/31/2008 8:52:42 AM

Just wanted to share my thought like the other PP, when I was on nutri-system before I gt PG..my daily cals were 1500...definatly NOT enoutgh for a PG women and someone being active 4hrs-8hrs a day on their feet..?!" -- BECKYBF - 12/31/2008 8:51:44 AM
"Well I wasn't over weight when I got pregnant but my doctor said I was gaining the weight quickley and I simply said it's a boy so we did some light dieting (meaning changed the foods) I went to organic products and added yogurt and dan active to my daily routine and instead of running 3 miles I walk 4 miles every morning. My weight has come back to normal and I also added gatorade for extra electrolytes and I must say this is very enjoyable. Also something really healthy is fresh steamed green beans they fill you up and help you maintain weight. Well all fresh veggies are good for anybody but especially pregnant women my doctor said. Since I started walking everyday I have had no swelling except when I wake up and no cramps and no backaches." -- TAHONA06 - 10/18/2008 2:38:32 PM
"Since not all weight is metabolically active, adjusted weights are typically used when calculating calorie/nutrient needs for people that are in overweight categories." -- TANYA_BABYFIT - 7/1/2008 12:47:12 PM
"These suggested calorie intakes are too low for any pregnant woman, let alone an overweight one.

For example, a person weighing 200 lbs, needs at least 2000 calories per day just to maintain their weight.

And a 1500 calorie meal plan, is considered a diet for any one of any weight.

Be careful ladies... I would increase every recommended serving by 1-2 to get a little more nutrition in them." -- ENIXIE99 - 7/1/2008 12:14:09 PM
"It is definitely important to keep your perspective here...if you are overweight (and I am) it is not healthy to gain too much while pregnant. You certainly need to watch your food intake to deliver a healthy baby. Overweight moms are at a higher risk for gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, water retention, etc. Being pregnant should be a wonderful experience for everyone whether heavy or not. But you will be a much happier person if you watch your food intake and try to at least walk a little each day. It makes labor, delivery and recovery that much easier. I can say that I have been there and I know from first hand experience!" -- GOTHVENUS - 6/14/2008 3:29:19 PM
"They make us (obese) out to be a future scary experience because of our weight. Why can't they let us enjoy that we are pregnant?! Celebrate, you're making a baby! Yay!

I use(d) food as a crutch, so what?! I do not use drugs, alcohol, smoke, caffeine or prescription drugs. We obese could have it alot worse and I wish they would not be so negative. We have enough to deal with ourselves, eh?

Why would you need to gain weight with a baby? Obvious answers - baby placenta larger blood supply...

In Britain, the weight gain guidelines are a lot different. They say a maximum of 10 pounds for the whole of the pregnancy. Eat healthy, take your prenatal vitamins, some form of exercise, that's it. Sounds good to me!

So long as you eat healthy for ONE and you are obese you are okay. I have talked to my doctor and she said that I can still lose weight, just eat a healthy balanced diet for One. I have lost weight, just not dramatically, 3 pounds over the last 2 1/2 weeks. You will lose weight anyway if you were obese to begin with because you consume more calories than the average person (typically) and need to walk everyday.
I actually don't expect to gain weight. I expect to eat healthy take a casual 1/2 hr walk. My doctor and I are closely monitoring my health. I'll maintain my weight, but my belly will be growing! That's a difference. My baby is only the size of a raspberry, not expending enough calories to justify my old eating habits I'll tell ya.

Celebrate - just not with a brownie :-)

"my not so humbe opinion :)-

if you are eating the standard American diet....processed food....eating out (alot)....fast food....powdered mashed potatoes....lunchables.....highly processed grains...etc you will require more than 2000 calories to get the nutrition you need.

if you are eating real vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts, lean meats, BEANS, dairy. Not eating the processed foods or prepared foods, avoiding fast food or anything overly processed. Avoiding fake food. You will get a lot more out of the calories you eat and won't really need more than that. Us fat people already have the fat stores needed.

I think if you eat whole foods and eat when your hungry and don't eat when your not your body will let you know what and how much you need. This assumes you have a healthy mental attitude towards food. So if you have eating issues this might be a good time to deal with them.

Eating quality food will ensure the your baby and your health. Your weight will be fine and your baby will be healthy from all those whole food nutrients and lack of chemicals that processed foods are stuffed with.

Quality not quantity you could say.

sorry this is my particular soap box:)

"I have always found Drs to be useless with guidance about weight (prego or not) they always say, "well eat a well balanced diet and moderate exercise." Well Doc I'm a mtn biker I get more than moderat exercise...thank you :)

Babyfit didn't recommend a target for me b/c my BMI was "obese" but my body fat (caliper measurement by fitness trainer) is 33% which puts me in the "overweight" category. I have a lot of muscle mass to go with the fat.

I really liked this article. Great guidance for eating to maintain proper rate of gain. Makes you wonder why doctors can't give this simple guidance.

I've maintained a healthy diet for awhile now with whole fruits, veggies, grains, & lean meats. So these guidelines fit in well with my current eating. I'm naturally eating in the 1700 - 1800 calorie range. I'd have to stuff myself to get to 2300 calories now that I'm not drinking wine at night. Or dip into some hagen daz which I don't think I have had in 2 years.....

At the grocery store I saw some skinny lady loading her cart up with crap and it ticked me off. I'm overweight but I'm grabbing wheat n' bran shredded wheat and she's grabbing frosted flakes. I'm taking triscuits and she's putting cheetos in her cart..... aarrgghhh!!!

Oh well I might be fat but I'm still healthier than she is. LOL :)-" -- TMRPLUS1 - 5/7/2008 9:52:52 AM

I am doing the best I can to ensure that I am not gaining and yet the weight still finds me! I am eating tons of veggies, fruit, fish and whole grains for a total of 1800 cals/day and walking between 30 and 60 mins everyday and yet I am still gaining! I don't think it is healthy for a pregnant woman to be stressed about her weight!" -- BUTTRFLY - 4/12/2008 11:24:21 AM

"I would just like to share my experience with this. I just gave birth to my daughter two weeks ago and had an extremely healthy pregnancy. I am obese and I wound up losing almost 20lbs. in my first trimester and gained weight back very slowly. When I delivered I had only had a 2lb. net gain and my baby girl was a healthy 7lbs. 6oz., beautiful color, no complications. At my first prenatal appointment my doctor told me that they didn't want me to gain any weight whatsoever, and they encouraged me to lose weight through safe diet and exercise techniques early in my pregnancy. It is not uncommon or unhealthy for an overweight or obese woman to lose weight during her pregnancy, it's just a matter of monitoring the baby and making sure it is on the right track weight-wise." -- ASHMU5584 - 7/19/2007 10:24:08 PM
"It is important to review the information presented in this article carefully. As stated, if you are OVERWEIGHT you should gain about 2/3 pound per week during the 2nd and 3rd trimester or 18 pounds total. If you are OBESE you should gain about ½ pound per week during the 2nd and 3rd trimesters for a 14 pound total.

I believe that as long as mum and bub are healthy and happy then what does it matter!!!?? No wonder women have poor body image, as its even frown apon to gain a lil extra weight when pregnant! Sorry ladies!! However I am 27 weeks and yes i have gained over what i should have so far, and yes I am quite stressed about it...Due to the fact its such a big issue! I gained a total of 22 pounds my last pregnancy and I was very proud of myself. I lost all of it plus 10 pounds at six weeks. I eat when I'm hungry and make sure I do it within reason. I want chocolate I eat slimfast bars or 100 calorie snacks." -- CHISSL - 7/4/2007 1:14:11 PM

"I had been following Weight Watchers for about 5 months before I became pregnant. I was eating aprox. 1600 calories and losing about 2 lbs. a week. I seriously hope no obese pregnant women decide to follow this article's suggestion of 1500-1700. That is a calorie restriction and could be harmful to the baby." -- JESSMIESTER - 7/4/2007 11:45:22 AM
"There was a study released in the last week or so done in Boston that says if a obese woman is pregnant and loses weight it would not be harmful to the fetus at all!!!! I weighed 175lbs when I found out I was pregnant and wore and still wear a size large and I am considered obese because of my height which is 5"4 I take bmi charts with a grain of salt . Because every woman is shaped differently. But I am trying not to gain any more weight. I know lots of women that lost weight during pregnancy(not purposely)
and had a healthy baby." -- BLESSEDLUVVY - 7/4/2007 9:14:15 AM
"The ADA (American Diabetes Association) wil have differen recommendations for pregnant diabetics then the ADA (American Dietetic Association) will have for over weight pregnant ladies. Diabetes carries different rules and recommendations and this article is not intended for that population. As stated in this article, "As you and your physician monitor your weight gain, you can always increase calories to increase weight gain."" -- TANYA_BABYFIT - 5/7/2007 7:30:28 AM
"100 pounds of fat may not be metabolically active, but it is, well, heavy, and takes a lot of energy (calories) to carry around. I sincerely doubt that a 250 pound woman who follows a strict 1500 calorie diet will not lose significant weight over 9 months. All articles and obstetric advice indicate that a woman should NEVER diet during pregnancy. A 1500 calorie diet IS a dieting level, especially for someone carrying all that weight around with them." -- BELINDAJANE - 5/6/2007 5:04:49 PM
"For people over 30 BMI just like for those that are 150% of IBW or more, nutrition professionals use an adjusted body weight to determine calorie needs. Fat is not metabolically active so just because a persons weight continues to go up, it doesn't mean that their metabolic and calorie needs continue to rise at the same rate. You want someone who is obese or morbidly obese to utilize fat reserves and many of these patients that follow this guideline actually gain 10-15 pounds and do not lose weight. This recommendation is consistent with the American Dietetic Association standards of practice for obese individuals." -- TANYA_BABYFIT - 5/6/2007 3:57:43 PM
"I really question those calorie recommendations in the table for Tip #3. If a woman has a BMI over 30, she weighs a lot and will lose quite a bit of weight every week on a 1500-1700 calorie diet (and how much in 9 months?! 40-50 lbs, possibly.) I'm surprised to find this recommended by an expert." -- BELINDAJANE - 5/6/2007 10:37:49 AM
"It is always recommended that you take these or any guidelines to your doctor to discuss what is best for you. The more overweight/obese an individual, the more individualized their program has to be during pregnancy or after pregnancy." -- TANYA_BABYFIT - 5/4/2007 9:37:27 AM
"I would not just follow these calorie suggestions without talking to a doctor. According to this chart I should be taking in 1500-1700 calories/day. In order to maintain my current weight I should be taking in 2800 calories/day. With my first child I saw an endocronologist because of gestational diabetes and he gave me a diet to follow that was 2100-2300 calories/day and I have had good luck with that. He said that it was perfectly fine not to gain anything, but please get in touch with him if I was loosing much weight in my third trimester. PLEASE TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR!!!!!" -- MOM3BUCKS - 5/4/2007 6:45:27 AM
"Great Article! I only need to gain 15-25 lbs and had now idea how many calories per day that would translate into until I read this article. I was eating way too much and didn't know it. Thanks!" -- BBRIANA - 3/8/2007 4:16:54 PM
""There is a difference between overweight and obese related to recommendations and guidelines. This article address those that are overweight. Anyone that is obese in their weight status should not undertake weight loss without the direct supervision of a Dr. and Registered Dietitian. Likwise, they should get nutrition and calorie range recommendations for pregnancy and breastfeeding from them as well." -- TANYA_BABYFIT - 2/23/2007 7:25:50 AM
"This entire thing does not bode well with me. After considerable research and much talk with my family doctor as well as my ob-gyno I'm at loss at how these directions can be given to people who may not do the extensive research. I'm a good 300lbs. I'm working on baby number 2 and I want at least 5. I've realized with this child that my weight is a problem and to be around for my kids or to have any more I need to take control. Inoder for me to maintain my current weight I need to eat roughly 3000 calories a day. For weight loss I've been told not to cut out more than 1000 calories until my body has time to adjust. There are too many things that need to be taken into account before you can safely go ahead and there should also be a warning sign at the top of the page before any recommendations are given. I strongly reccommend to anyone that they speak to their doctor(s) and request to be referred to a nutritionist who will be able to help them monitor and control themselves." -- OBSCURE - 2/22/2007 9:55:46 PM
"When I was pregant the first time my doctor gave me no advice about my weight. I started my pregnancy at a BMI of 28 and gained 63 pounds throughout my pregnancy. By this information I should have only gained 15-25 pounds. My doctor never said a word to be about gaining too much weight. I was healthy, and my baby was healthy and that is all he worried about." -- DAMPIERT - 1/30/2007 3:04:49 PM
"I stop smoking as soon as I find out I was pregnant and on my first trimester I gain almost 20 pounds even though I used to walk every day on my second trimester I gain 15 pounds and I'm afraid because I don't know how much I'm gonna gain on my third trimester help" -- AMASON1 - 12/1/2006 9:10:42 PM

"I am confused? I don't know what to do. Only being 23 none of this makes sense to me. Even though I am pregnate w/ my 2nd child. At my last appt. my Dr. said she was concerned about my wieght gain. Saying I gained 15lbs last month & another 8lbs this month. I understand the whole eatting right thing but I dont understand why the baby fit nutrition program said to eat 2130- 2430 calories a day. Wouldn't that make me gain more weight? Every thing is based on a 2,000 calorie diet... Why would I eat more calories??? I'm not trying to lose wieght but I'd like to try to stay at the wieght I'm at from now on out til the baby is born.... and I have no clue what %RDA means or what it is!!!??? I didn't have this problem w/ my 1st pregnacy! Can someone please help me understand this?" -- NICOLEB23 - 11/1/2006 7:48:09 PM
"I would love to know what "obese" really is. My doctor hasnt said anything to me about being overweight, but according to these charts I am "obese." I only weighed 176 lbs, and I was in a size 12 before I got pregnant w/ this one. This is my 3rd baby. At 18 I was 125 lbs and became pregnant. I had a 9lb 6oz baby boy shortly after I turned 19 and ended up 180 lbs- A size 18! When he was 9 mos. old, and I was 20, I became pregnant again. At 21 I gave birth to a 9lb 4oz baby girl-she came early and should have been more like 11lb 8oz. Now I am 22 and I lost weight in the first trimester because of sickness, I am currently 21 weeks into my pregnancy and I am still 2 lbs below my pre pregnancy weight. So am I obese or not? I only went from a size 8-10 to a 12. I am a lot bigger in my leggs and hip/stomach area, but what non-annorexic female wouldnt be after being pregnant every year since she was 18!!!-And yes I am married, I got married when I was 5 1/2 mos. pregnant w/ my first one." -- MICHELLE_ERIC - 10/14/2006 10:22:34 AM
"I am currently pregnant with my third child. Durring my second pregancy I lost 15 pounds total. The day of birth I lost another 30 pounds, my baby weighed 8 lbs 6 oz. So in all I actually lost 45 pounds and still had a healthy child (the weight of the baby counter acted with what I was loosing, so it didnt' appear that I lost that much). I didn't try hard to diet, I just drank a lot of water and walked 2 miles a day. I ate what I wanted, but didn't over do it. It is possible to lose weight while being pregnant." -- SOGLESB3 - 9/6/2006 11:10:49 AM
"The calorie chart seems a little restrictive to me. Does anyone else have an opinion about this? If I were to eat 1500-1700 calories I would be eating less than before I was pregnant! I've been using the Babyfit tracker and staying between 2300-2600 calories and I have gained slightly less than the 1/2 pound a week that my doctor told me to gain." -- ALJOHN00 - 8/29/2006 2:25:44 PM
"Mommy to be-

I'am sure your baby will be fine. When I was pregnant with my 3rd. I lost 15 lbs. total through about week 26. This loss to was related to stress. My mom was diagnosed with terminal cancer at the beginning of my pregnancy. During my 2nd and 3rd trimester I quickly regained the weight and delivered a healthy 8 lb. 9 oz. baby girl. The one advantage of being over weight during pregnancy is that we have a little extra stored fat for baby.
Congratulations,
heinzbaby5" -- HEINZBABY5 - 7/16/2006 6:46:57 PM
"MTRIPLETT,

I think your doing just great. If your Dr was concerned he/she would say something for sure. But it doesn't hurt to ask. I would keep an eye on the weight loss though. I was afraid of the whole weight thing. But I have only gained 5.5 and i'm 18 months. Better than last time. Sometimes I look at what I ate for the day and think to myself ok I have to skip a meal to even it out. But than I have to kick myself in the bum and say I can't do that anymore. Gaining weight is slightly depressing after you have worked so hard to loss it and than find out once your on a roll that your expecting and you thought you were done. Thats what happen to me . But as far as your other Dr, Be sure that you are mentaly taking care of yourself. I see a theripst and are on meds for a couple mental illnesses. Just do as your Doc says and you should be just fine. Need anymore adive you may e-mail me at Blessdbythebest@comcast.net

Robin" -- MOMMYOF3PLUS1 - 7/5/2006 2:53:55 AM
"My concern so far is my age and I have lost 12lbs I am 5months pregnant with my first child I was 170 at 5'3" pre-pregnancy, my Dr. hasn't said a thing, so I'm assuming I'm okay, should I ask? My psychologist is more concerned with my stress and weight loss than my OB. My amnio confirmed baby is genetically healthy, but will he be okay? I was worried about gaining, but so far that hasn't been an issue at all. everyone tells me I'll start gaining soon. what do you guys think?" -- MTRIPLETT - 7/4/2006 3:10:21 PM
"Hello Ladies,
I am amazed at the amount of pregnant woman that are having the same struggles I am. I am 18wks pregnant with my 4th . Yeap thats what I said baby number 4. It was a exetremely HUGE suprise. I was on a roll with my weight loss and was well on my way to losing my last 40lbs which would bring me to 130. Than Banggg took a pregnancy test and found myself extremely depressed. I have so far gained 5 1/2 lbs. My other pregnancy's were aweful . My first I gained over 75 lbs, my second somewhere around 50 and my son (3rd) 53 lbs. I never lost all the weight from my first baby. I have found when I get on the scale every monday . And see a gain I start to cry. I had gotten use to seeing the scale go down and not up. I have a print out of where I went wrong with my son. So I am trying to go by that . so far I am doing well. I just know how hard I had worked to lose that 60 lbs . And I am always way to tired to walk or get any sort of real exercise. Any Suggestions?" -- MOMMYOF3PLUS1 - 7/4/2006 1:17:05 PM
"I'm 5'5" and was pre-pregnancy weight at 296 lbs. I'm just starting my 7th month of pregnancy and I only gained 12 lbs. so far - it's all in the belly! My doctor has been happy with my weight gain of 1-3 lbs per month. Here's the thing - I haven't changed my diet much at all. I've always eaten a balanced diet, I'm just a poor exerciser. What you have to remember is that your BMR (basil medibolic rate) increases 20% when you're pregnant so you're burining a bunch of calories and kid-o takes most of the nutrients. My best advice: don't stress, take your pre-natal vitimins, drink a bunch of water and your body will know when you're doing something wrong. Be healthy - Be Happy!" -- SSCHMIDT - 7/4/2006 9:55:38 AM
"I was severely obese when i got pregnant with my son. I was 251 lbs and had a BMI or approx 40. My Dr told me to gain no more then 15-20 lbs and lose no more then 10. Yes She told me it was ok to lose. The funny thing about being obese and pregnant is your body knows what it needs. I craved fruit salad, sushi (cooked of course) and chicken tikka masala. I ate rediculously healthy because that is what i wanted. My first trimester I lost 11 lbs due to morning sickness. By the time i delivered I was back up to 251, but it was mostly water weight . I gave birth to a 9 lb 4.5 oz boy. By 1 month post partum I had lost 30 lbs. My ob was very pleased with this because babys are perfect little parasites, they always take waht they need from you. The reason you dont want to loose too much weight is because toxins are stores in fat, so as you loose the fat you release those toxins and they affect the baby. It is very important to be in shape and to be a reasonable weight prior to conceiving, but it is certainly possible to have a healthy pregnancy while overweight or obese." -- FYREBLOOM - 5/31/2006 10:12:56 AM
"I am 248 and I am 1 month pregnant.I am very scared about being this obese! I am starting my weight control today and excercise. My Dr. told me its okay to eat 1500 calories a day as planned by a nutritionist. I will loose weight and he said its okay. He is a high risk Dr.This is my 7 child I am 37 and very tired. I would appreciate any advice or help. I am looking forward to meeting my baby. I also gave a 18 month old.(which is how I gained a lot of this)" -- DARLAMOM - 5/24/2006 5:27:49 AM
"I have absolutely NO CONCEPT of limiting weight gain while I am pregnant. I am 33 weeks and have gained 60+ pounds. This is exactly what happened to me last time too. I excercise for 2 hours every week day - which I did not do for my last pregnancy. It has made NO difference. What am I supposed to do?" -- WENDIEJS - 5/24/2006 2:49:26 AM
"Wonderful Article. I'm currently experiencing difficutly with excessive weight gain. But with close monitoring of my daily food consumtion, I'm confident that I can gain control of this sitution and have a healthy pregnancy and baby." -- RAINIHAYNES - 3/14/2006 1:01:00 PM
"At 5'1" tall and 168 prepregnancy weight I was scared to learn that I was concidered Obess. My doctor is watching my weight gain like a hawk, but wonderfully enough he seems very happy that I haven't gained anything. He's not really said anything about the fact that since he started me excercising I've actually lost 6lbs. I love to workout and he's happy that I enjoy it because he assures me it will make me stronger, healthier, and give me a very healthy baby. This article gave me some tips that I can take and see if he wants to include those into what he's already got me doing. Thank you!" -- POOKAZHARLEY - 3/13/2006 6:02:43 PM
"BLESS YOU FOR THIS ARTICLE! As I'm beginning my second pregnancy, and having worked relentlessly to lose weight from my first pregnancy, this was exactly the kind of encouragement and guidelines that I needed. It is so refreshing to feel like I'm among women who don't judge or misunderstand, but who seem to really support and listen to each other, and to me." -- BECCA_60 - 2/23/2006 8:47:54 PM
"This article is just what I needed. I just found out we are expecting our second child. I haven't really gotten into shape from the last one. I started walking and I started to feel lighter and happier." -- ROARKJR - 2/22/2006 1:56:38 PM
"This is our first baby and I'm starting off 100 lbs overweight. I'm 5'6" and I'm almost 290. I've never had high blood pressure, I'm moderately active and I feel great (no morning sickness or anything) but I'm really very afraid for my health and more importantly, for the health of our baby. I think I'm going to ask my doctor to refer me to a nutritionist and perhaps I'll look into a personal trainer..." -- SSCHMIDT - 2/14/2006 9:41:52 AM
"It seems that a lot of women have the same issue about weight. My first pregnancy I gain 85 pounds! But I was under weight too. Now I am on my second and I haven't lost a whole lot of weight and I don't want to be that big again. I am a little scared but after talking to alot of people i am not as nervous. I do try to exercise at least 15 to 30 minutes a day. Don't give up ladies! I need you girls for support too!" -- HOPEMHALL - 2/8/2006 2:26:46 PM
"With my first baby I gained about 70 pounds and only lost about 15 after, I am still over weight and it has been 5 years, now I am pregnant again and I am scared to gain weight. I have benn walking on the Tread Mill every day for about 45 minutes but it is hard." -- ALYSSITY - 2/6/2006 1:41:09 PM

just found out that Iam pregnant again -Iam so happy. Although Iam very scared of the weight gain and all of the problems that go along with pergancy and weight gain.iam hoping that your web site can help me.So far it is very good and interesting." -- EMILYANDMOMMY - 1/12/2006 6:37:35 AM
"Be careful with weight gain. Age may play a factor (for me it did) With my 1st baby (now 16 yrs) I gained 60- 70 lbs and lost it all. My second I gained 60 lbs and lost maybe 25 of the weight the first year and another 15 going into year 2nd!! So I came to this sight and it already told me I was overweight. Just be careful to both mommy and baby. Good Luck and God Bless you both!" -- JPENSENSTADLER - 12/8/2005 6:07:15 AM

"This is my first pregnancy, and I've already gained 35 pounds in 6 months. My RN has said things to me about my wieght, but my doctor hasen't seen any reason to worry.
I totally believe it depends on your size and genetics. Both my grandmothers and my Mom gained 50 pounds with each child. My sister gained more with her second (and she had alot of fluid). I agree with watching what you eat and not pigging out. But it all depends on your size..i say have fun being pregnant!" -- ACHATRIONA - 11/17/2005 10:00:49 PM
"Those weight guidlines are totally unrealistic. Some women tend to gain more or less depending on their body and genetics. I am considered obese and had twins early at near normal weights but my doctor wanted me to gain more! Know your body and trust your instincts, just don't take pregnancy as an excuse to pig out." -- MOMMYDRAGON - 11/17/2005 9:10:17 AM
