"i,m 9 wks, i have always been a real walker doing 45mins most days of the wk - but have laxed back a bit with the early stages of pregnancy, as my last pregnancy ended with a miscarriage, but what does everyone say about me walking as i live around alot of hills so its all up and down hill when i walk, of which i feel fine enough to do but i,m a bit scared - look forward to your comments" -- MRSMRSMITH - 2/10/2013 3:52:12 PM
"@losing4baby: good for you! I hope all of your efforts made for an easy delivery as well. I do Pilates 4-5 days/wk and prenatal yoga when I can fit it in, and I'm lucky to live in a large new construction neighborhood where I can wander and see and the progress. I can walk miles without leaving the neighborhood, and yet the view constantly changes. Makes it so easy there is no excuse." -- MARANYNC - 2/10/2013 9:49:41 AM
"If you have a smartphone, look for "Pedometer Ultimate". It's a free app and works great. I carry my cell phone when walking anyway. There's a small fee you can pay to upgrade for more features, but I've been fine with the free version. It not only tells you steps, but also tells you distance, speed, lap calories, and more. Like any app, it will take some juice, so don't leave it running when you aren't using it." -- ROGGEDANCE - 6/18/2012 10:13:45 AM
"I love walking! I am continuing to do it and am 15, almost 16 weeks pregnant. Hoping to keep going up until baby comes!" -- STACEYSKI - 5/25/2012 8:11:51 AM
"Marymar- I exercised (including a 2x per week bootcamp type class with obvious modifications for pregnancy and walking daily) up until the day before I delivered. I am 2 1/2 weeks from delivery date and it has made all the difference in the recovery." -- LOSING4BABY99 - 8/14/2011 11:19:10 PM
"Any fitness time is better than no fitness time so if that how you are able to get your exercise in go for it!" -- SAMANTHABABYFIT - 5/9/2011 3:58:50 PM
"I dont have a vehicle so mostly bike/bus places. Im alot more comfortable biking then I am walking. Im wondering if walking for 5minutes to one errand and then 20 minutes later doing another 10 minutes to somewhere else does any good?" -- DANNOMORE - 5/9/2011 1:12:42 PM
"I do Leslie Sansone every single day! I have so much more energy and my pregnancy blues have decreased dramatically. I switch them out through out the week with my on-demand cable. She has new DVDs out on her website and Walmart. I can't say enough about how this has changed my pregnancy. I am on my third consistent week and am starting to see the results in my body as well. I am 32 weeks and was wondering if anybody has worked out up until their due date? I would like to if I can." -- MARYMAR7730 - 3/11/2011 11:33:36 AM
"I LOVE using the Leslie Sansone DVDs. She has several new ones out. Go to her website to check out what she has. You can usually buy them at Wal-Mart or Target. I actually just bought 2 of her latest ones at Costco. Some of them use light weights and resistance bands, too, which gives you strength training and cardio all at the same time!" -- MANDYLAWOSU - 10/14/2010 9:37:18 AM
"I love Leslie Sansone's Walking videos! They are so awesome!
Very low impact but it gets your heart going. She is great at giving positivity to you and motivation. It doesn't matter what the weather is like outside, you can workout!

You also decide what intensity you want to work at. Its all about what you put into it. You could go through the whole workout and take it easy and light. You could also put alot of intensity if you want. Its really up to you. Easy warm up and cool downs with stretching afterwards. You can do 1 mile in 15-20 min.

I would recommend her videos to any and everyone that can walk.

Right now Leslie has 2 videos free on Comcast's on demand network under the fitness/sports section." -- BEAUTIFULPEACE - 3/3/2010 1:11:06 PM
"The Leslie Sansone videos are excellent. They are a bit dated (back to the 80's/90's with florescent colors and big socks) but they are great. She's got tons of different types." -- JENNFIND - 2/10/2010 3:43:05 PM
"I just started week 27 and noticed that I am starting to get breathless and tired very quickly, I have always exercised and taken daily walks with my two dogs, but now I am really feeling the changes in my body,
I have gained 10 pounds, and I'm not really sure why it's hard to catch
my breath lately, my Dr. says it's normal so I am not worried about it." -- EVELYNQ - 2/10/2010 1:02:34 PM
"It's the dead of winter and impossible to take my lo's out in the cold to go for a walk. Hubby doesn't get home until after dark. A friend told me about "Walk Away the Pounds" with Leslie Sansone. It's awesome and it doesn't take a lot of space. I love it!" -- CMEE4THBABY - 2/10/2010 9:51:08 AM
"I'm 11 weeks pregnant now and have read in multiple places that walking is the pregnancy exercise of choice. I've done a lot of exercising prior to pregnancy but I usually slow down a bit when the weather gets cold in the winter (which is when I found out I was pregnant). I'm pretty fit but I could not for the life of me get out of bed in the middle of the first trimester to do ANYTHING. It was frustrating enough not to go out walking without feeling extremely lightheaded, but even moreso not being able to clean my apartment those weeks.

Now in my 11th week I'm feeling much much better and don't feel too bad I wasn't walking from the beginning even though I'm fairly athletic. I figure I'd give my body a break and wait for the promising 2nd trimester when my energy levels should be returning to normal. I'm starting up into the 3x's a week again and want to incorporate some prenatal yoga, when I'm in my 2nd trimester, and swimming when it gets warmer too (I'll be in third trimester in summer so I figure its perfect timing). I'd say... definitely bring a water bottle, that helps me a lot, and try to go out walking but don't push yourself if its more than just a little uncomfortable. Your blood pressure is much lower in the middle of first trimester and causes a lot of lightheadedness, that's what kept me off my feet those weeks and I'm glad I did!" -- JAZHANDS - 2/10/2010 7:55:56 AM
"My husband and I go for a walk every evening. Besides getting exercise it's a great time for us to just be together and talk about our days and our fears and thoughts about baby." -- MANDAJB - 1/12/2010 3:20:51 PM
"I am 38 weeks pregnant and I try very hard to walk everyday, but my legs/hips/back/ankles have been in so much pain since the end of the second tri-mester. i have tons of trouble sleeping b/c i can not find a comfortable position. The one low impact activity i have found that helps is the Elliptical. I can manage 30-40 mins atleast 4-5 days a week and not feel as much pain in my joints at the end of my exercise. On days that I don't work out, i use cleaning the house as a way to stay moving so i don't feel like a couch potato or feel like i did nothing at the end of the day. Also, my husband and I play Wii sports and wii Resort, which def gets you moving." -- SEDOOLIT4 - 8/14/2009 8:50:43 AM
"I hear that even when you are tired, get out there! i am worried, i just had a baby 6 months ago and just found out that i am preggers....... YEY, very excited, but nervous about how my body will adjust, considering that i havent lost all the weight from the first one..... oh boy" -- JAYDAPEARL - 7/24/2009 2:25:04 PM
"i think that walking is great when I feel like it and there are days that are harder then others just becuase I feel so out of breath after 15 min, I think that any type of exercise is beneficial, days that I don't feel like walking I go down to the pool and i swim it takes off the pressure from walking and reduces swelling plus since I live in the desert and it s already in the 100;s then it cools me off. No part of the day is cool unless I get up at 5 am and I am not about to do that. After this baby is born though I would like to begin walking to get back into shape plus i think that it will be good to bond with my new baby" -- HCOSTA08 - 6/18/2009 8:59:35 PM
"check out exercisetv.tv/startwalking for the walk at home program. It's great for those days when you just can't get outside!" -- KMFARNSWORTH - 6/17/2009 12:06:00 AM
"I am 5.5 weeks pregnant and I walk about 3 times a week. I am super tired all the time and my boobs are so so so (and so) sore.. but I continuously hear, that if you walk in the first and second trimester it really pays off in the 3rd trimester and after you deliver. I walk 2 miles with 3 pound weights and 2 miles without weights.. I really want my arms to tone before the baby comes.

the advice that I am given.. even when I don't feel like it.. go walking.. I am a little nervous with lifting weights or doing cardio.. so I keep it to walking..

happy pregnancy.. and happy walking!" -- BABYJOY1 - 6/3/2009 3:30:36 PM
"Before I got pregnant (and it got too cold) I walked at least 5-6 days a week and jogged as well. I was also doing weight training. After the weather changed, I slowed down and when I found out I was pregnant I was only working out maybe 1 day a week. I had a miscarriage before and I'm not sure that it was due to my vigorous workout schedule. This time around, I decided to take it easy. It has gotten warmer and I have started to walk again. I started with 2 miles and I want to go back up to at least 5 miles like I did last summer. I figure that since I have a history of working out, this will not be stressful on my pregnancy and my doctor also instructed me to get at least 30 mins of exercise in anyway. I'm also starting a prenatal strength training class on Saturday which will add to my current walking program. Walking is great whether you're pregnant or not!" -- DVYNCHYLD - 2/10/2009 9:59:51 AM
"I was so sick the first trimester and even a 20 weeks still have bad days. I was in very good shape before getting pregnant and didn't exercise at all until recently because I was too ill. Only now do I realize that even a little bit of exercise makes a huge difference to how I feel, although it can make me dizzy and is still a challenge most days." -- DSHAKINO - 2/10/2009 7:09:45 AM
"i am 7.5 weeks gone and was walking about 15-20 mins everyday but i a,m so tired most of the time now.used to take the stairs at work but cant seem to do that anymore.i am also really worried about my weight cos my BMI was 25.5 shortly before conception." -- DAMSY4REAL - 2/10/2009 6:42:50 AM
"I found out last week, February 5th, that I was 6 weeks pregnant. And before that all I did was sleep! I never walked, but I did eat A LOT!! =D But now, since I know, I try to walk anywhere; to the mailbox, to the local corner store which is about 5 to 10 minutes away, etc. I, also, do my own grocery shopping instead of letting my mom do it! Only because I need the exercise. But I have to get into the habit of walking. I have a car so it's a little hard! But I'll get into the habit real fast since it's hard for me to sleep through out the whole night." -- CHARSFIRST2009 - 2/10/2009 5:19:05 AM
"im in my first trimester i used to walk before i got pregnant but ive been so sick and so fatigued I cant even bring myself to get out of bed somedays. In the article it said the first trimester should be easy but it hasnt been for me is this normal?" -- CNIEWINSKI1 - 11/30/2008 4:54:47 PM

"I just found out that I'm pregnant (3 weeks) and plan to continue my current walking routine which includes In Home Walking (1 and 2 mile). I also do another routine that adds light resistance. The DVD programs by Leslie Sansone are available on-line (Ebay and Amazon) and are very quick and easy to do - No excuses not to fit them into your daily routine." -- HAH426 - 11/5/2008 9:20:21 AM
"Is trimester known as week or month? please tell as I completed my 5th month but not started exercising ., walking is done as i m wurking and keeps on using stairs and walk also" -- ASHISHIMANSHI - 10/22/2008 4:10:08 AM
"I am curious. I was not a runner or anything. 1 mile about 3 times a week before pregnancy, and I watch what I eat. If I continue to walk 15 min. a day at a very slow pace, will that help me at all when it is time to deliver?" -- MRSPOE06 - 8/14/2008 11:47:49 AM
"This is a great article on walking. I am an avid runner and had planned to continue running as long as I could but at 6 weeks it no longer felt comfortable to do so.

I do have a question as it is the second time that I have seen this advice on this site. Why does this article still recommend a heart rate limit of 140? My understanding is that this was the previous limit indicated by the ACOG and they have since updated their recommendations (2002)." -- NUBIANQUEENSB - 7/29/2008 3:36:52 PM
"Reading everyone's comments is encouraging and gives me some faith that there is SOMETHING I can do to begin to feel more like myself again. Although I am an avid outdoors walker/runner when I'm not carrying a baby, right now (9 wks) I'm just tired and I feel like a slob because it's winter, I'm just over a severe cold and not feeling well. I'm setting the goal to just walk 30 minutes 3-4 times a week right now, and maybe I can get back into a light weight routine once I'm past the first trimester. Every little bit counts, right?" -- NEWBY32 - 2/10/2008 11:44:44 AM
"This is nice in theory but I have had intense round ligament pain for months (I am at 33 weeks now). I asked my dr. if I should fight through the pain and keep walking and she said no and that I should rest when I feel pain. I used to be a runner so its very frustrating to not be able to walk, and even more frustrating to read everywhere how I should walk every day. I have to search for an article on alternatives for round ligament pain sufferers. In the mean time, enjoy the walking to those who can!!" -- KRISTINEDELISA - 8/14/2007 12:47:48 PM
"I was so glad to hear that I will feel better around 12 weeks and be able to get back to walking. I really miss it, but I have felt pretty awful for the past 7 weeks. Thanks for the motivation from the rest of the walkers." -- FELOVE27 - 10/4/2006 8:37:51 PM
"My husband I and try to walk each night after dinner during the week. It is a wonderful way for us to reconnect after a day apart, dream about the future and explore our neighbourhood. It's important to make time for each other and remember that having a baby is a team event!" -- FOTOCHICK - 8/14/2006 11:06:58 AM
"I spent most of my 1st trimester either sleeping or eating carbohydrates. once I reached the 12 week mark I had tonnes more energy and started walking. Mentally its done wonders, when I'm having a 'fat' day I remind myself it could have been a lot worse if I wasn't walking 5 times a week!" -- M_KEMERY - 5/25/2006 6:02:59 AM
"i totally agree with this article. Just because of some pregnancy disturbance like nausea or heartburns, does not mean that one should be restricted to bedrest.the more mobile we keep ourself the more better one enjoy pregnancy and and ease up the delivery period.walking is thus one of the best and affordable exercise for all the pregnant women in this world." -- SANFAR - 5/10/2006 11:37:42 AM
"I totally agree with the walking think in order to keep you healthy. I don't believe we should stop doing healthy and active activities becuase we are pregnant. I talked with my dr, and he told me that if I start a regular walking and low impact excersise rutine now when we get pregnant again, I just had a m/c, I could get the best of my pg days. He tottaly recommended exercises and a healthy diet and voila, we could get a beautiful baby and a easy and less fatigue pregnancy." -- GINITA - 5/7/2006 11:24:38 AM
"Walking is great. As for sleeping on your back, you have a large vein known as the vena cava that is in your torso. So when you are on your back the baby may compress the vein and cause a decrease in returning blood flow to the heart, which as you can imagine isn't a good thing. Laying on the left side is optimal." -- VFLEMMING - 5/5/2006 3:55:05 PM
"I love to walk, and i know i would feel better if i did it more, but between woking 11-12 hrs a day, then going home to my 1 year old daughter and my husband, i'm so exhausted its all i can do to keep my house clean...(wich is going down hill too) anyone have any suggestions??? and for your ????-- ZONDIWE i was told during my first pregnancy that we have a major blood vessel in our backs, and when we start to put on weight in our ab, when we lay on our back we put pressure on that vessel and resrtict blood flow to the baby.
thanks" -- PRISCILLALYNN - 4/26/2006 12:58:09 AM
"Thanks for the encouragement. I am 39yrs old and18 weeks pregnant. havind lost a baby due to pre eclampsia 3 yrs ago, am determined to be as healthy as possible and avoid all excess weight. I walk but have not been regular. Your article has given encouraged me to increase my frequency to at least 3 times a week. Am having a Ceasarian and I want to have a quick recovery post op. This will be my second child, my daughter being 13years.

By the way what is wrong with sleeping on the back?" -- ZONDIWE - 1/3/2006 5:03:53 AM
"Amen to this article!

I actually started my walking program after I delivered my first child, in an effort to lose the pregnancy weight and get back into shape. Between walking and breastfeeding, I lost about 25 pounds and feel GREAT.

With this pregnancy, I haven't really altered my workout, except to increase my time walking when I feel like I'm no longer being challenged. I use a treadmill (great way to not allow storms to get in the way of fitness), and I've gradually added about 15 minutes to my walking time in the past 5 months. Like the article suggested, I've added 5 minutes at a time every month or every other month, depending when I felt I needed the challenge.

I used to walk about three days per week, although I've gradually increased it to seven. It's a wonderful, EASY way to get some reading time to myself after my daughter is in bed. My husband doesn't dare interrupt, since he knows how important my workout is to me.

My OB tells me that this is one of the best ways to prepare for labor. I really wish I'd been more physically fit with my first labor. With my first pregnancy, the most exercise I did was bringing a forkful of mac & cheese to my mouth. I'm planning on making things a bit different this time, though, and hopefully it will make a real difference." -- KENSBEV - 12/31/2005 9:46:24 PM
