Is it safe to eat yogurt while pregnant? I have been told that the active bacteria are bad for the baby. |

Fermented milk products are made by using different bacterial strains to ferment lactose (milk sugar). Yogurt is the most widely recognized fermented milk product. Other fermented milk products include cultured buttermilk, acidophilus milk, sour cream, kefir, or koumiss. There are about 100 trillion bacteria that normally line your intestinal tract. These bacteria contain both bad bacteria (those that are more likely to cause disease) and good bacteria (those that help protect you from disease). You can influence the composition of the good and bad bacteria in your intestinal tract by including good bacteria foods (probiotics) in your diet. While it is correct that yogurt contains bacteria—they are good bacteria that promote a healthy intestinal tract. Tanya Jolliffe, BabyFit healthy eating expert |
