Is the new Enova oil safe to use when I am pregnant or breastfeeding? |
![]() |
Enova™ oil is a reformulated mixture of canola and soybean oils that has essentially the same calories and fat content as the soy and canola oil from which it is made. The nutritional value of Enova oil is similar to that of traditional vegetable oil, containing 120 calories in a one-tablespoon (14-gram) serving. The oil has been sold in Japan since 1999 as "Econa". Consumers in Japan use it to stir-fry vegetables and to deep-fry tempura. Food manufacturers there have also put it into mayonnaise and salad dressings as well. Enova contains the well-known canola and soybean oils, but is currently being sold under a Food and Drug Administration provision known as GRAS, or "Generally Recognized As Safe" (a designation used for products whose ingredients are already considered harmless). There are currently no health concerns identified through use of this new product. Tanya Jolliffe, Babyfit Nutritionist |
