I am a big sushi eater. Can I still eat sushi that does not have fish in it, like cucumber rolls?
The Japanese word "sushi" indicates foods that use rice seasoned with sweet rice-wine vinegar. Of course, raw fish is the most popular ingredient in sushi, but the main element of sushi is Japanese sticky rice.
The safest way to enjoy sushi, whether pregnant or not, is to choose the fully cooked or vegetarian varieties, such as those that include cooked seafood [e.g., fully cooked eel (unagi) or shrimp (ebi)], vegetables [e.g., cucumber (kappa) maki], avocado (e.g., California roll), and other ingredients.
