Week 10: Add Some Oomph

Your Week-by-Week Guide to Pregnancy
-- By BabyFit

Your Baby This Week

This week signals the end of the "embryonic stage" and the start of the "fetal period." And with it comes rapid growth spurts. The good news is that the critical stage of development is over, and there is very little risk of developing congenital malformations from this point on. That doesn't mean you still don't have to be careful. Exposure to certain drugs, x-rays, alcohol, cigarette smoke, or even stress can still cause your baby harm.

This is the first week that your baby's weight is substantial enough to be measured! Still, he or she is tiny, weighing about 5 grams (0.18 ounces). About the size of a small plum, your baby is between 1.25 inches and 1.75 inches (4.4 cm) long.

Your Body This Week

By now you should be gaining some weight, but your "bump" will probably not be evident just yet. This is often an emotional period for many women, a time when you may not feel as excited about your pregnancy as you think you should. Not to worry-this is normal! Within a few weeks, your joy will be hard to contain! And don't be concerned if you're also feeling a little tired. That's normal, too!

Add Some Oomph to Your Routine

Variety is even more important when it comes to your workouts. Motivation, or lack of it, is probably the #1 reason people break their fitness routines. And not many of us can stay motivated by climbing the same set of stair-stepper stairs for weeks on end. The one single universal truth about exercise is this: just about any routine, workout, video, class or piece of equipment will show results if you stick with it. That means you simply have to find something you enjoy, or a collection of "somethings" to choose from, and let time and consistency do the rest. If you haven't tried one already, a physioball is a fun, light way to add some variety to your routine. Start bouncing your way to fitness today.

Healthy Meal Ideas

Is it possible to get bored with food? You bet it is. Particularly when healthy menu items are involved, it's easy to feel like you'll be eating the same thing, day in and day out. (Is it Tuesday? Must be broccoli night!) But any healthy menu plan should include a hefty dose of variety. Without it, stale taste buds start to crave those sweet and salty temptations that can derail even the best of intentions. BabyFit offers dozens of healthy, tasty recipes that your scale can't argue with.
