i knew i had read this somewhere! I have tried a few times and i feel something that feels like a "hole," but it is off to one side and not in the middle. Could that be my cervix? And, I have only felt it with one finger, but i could probably fit two as it seems to be quite "stretchy" and flexible . . . am i feeling the right thing??

Ella Grace Duffy arrived August 19, 2006 . . . she is the most amazing little girl and brings so much laughter to our hearts.

I tried checking mine also but its up really high so I gave up. I was checked bye the doctor today and I'm a 3 so I figured having sex would move it along alot faster. I was one on a visit and that same night had sex and woke up at 4am on the next day and ended up driving myself to the L&D room thinking no change but once they checked me I was a 3 50% effaced so maybe sex will work this time....

Not to sound germ-phobic or anything, but I hope if you do this you use sterile gloves or something...there's lots of little nasty germs under our fingernails, even after washing hands. And since you're water may be leaking slowly, you do have a chance of infection if you're sticking your bare fingers in there...

I didn't know this was possible, but I could see how it might be helpful to check when your laboring at home.

I have given up on finding the cervix. I think it may discourage me anyway.... :(

I'm 10 days away and DH has gladly helped in the area of "helping" any way he can. I'm ready for this big ole boy to come on down.

JUly, I was thinking last night after sex I should elevate my hips on a pillow or something to help the semen to pool around the cervix and help things along ... I didn't know if I should bother...
not such a dumb idea then ?

Sitting on the toilet makes it easier. I did that when I put the EPO up there. LOL about the orally taken prostogladins. I will have to tell my sisters friend who is due now!LOL. I already told her about elevating your bottom after sex, so this will atleast ellicit a giggle!

It feels kind of like a small knob to me - but mine's too high right now and I can't reach it. I used to check it while ttc.

ok I tried a few times but honestly I have NO idea what all I am feeling up there. What does the cervix feel like, and for me the pictures they show in the books don't reflect all the parts that seem to be in there, I feel a few things that I wasn't sure was the cervix or not, am I going nuts? can some one give a description of what it feels like?

With my daughter, now 18 months, the doctor actually told us having sex would be good. I was 13 days late and had been dilated at 4 cm (with no contractions) for about 10 days. I didn't want to get induced unless there was something wrong with the baby. So the Doc gave us advice on different was we might naturally start labor at home.
I think as long as you get the okay from your doc then sex is GREAT until you go into labor. And with that said, I don't see why cheecking yourself would be dangerous either as long as you wear golves and you are careful. I never checked with my last pregnancy but I probably will with this one once I get further along. (I'm 10 weeks today)
Also, when I was in lamaze before we were told that one cent = one finger and 2 = 2 and so one. This is with the finger rounded together not straight in a line.

Some come to share a lifetime, others just a brief moment in time. May my baby always be in my heart, though not in my arms...

My baby will be born on 29 Sept and I am praying for even a few minutes to spend with him before he returns to Heavenly Father.

LOL at "I'll have lots of sex and pray..." I mean come on, how often do you get to use that phrase and not have someone look at you weird? lol. Sorry, I have no advice since I haven't had my little one yet, that just tickled me :)

"Thankfully I did because, I had an infection from walking around for so long with my water broke. It crossed over to my baby, she got hypoglycemia,we were both given antibiotics, and my baby had to be on an IV."

I agree it's good you did. but I had to clarify something you said. You do not get infections simply from walking around with your water broken. when membranes rupture, fluids wash out of the vagina, which means infective bacteria must travel upstream against the current to enter the uterus. But durring an exam (vaginal by the dr, yourself, your husband) the caregiver slides her hands in, giving any organisms a way into the cervix. Waiting 24hrs or more is safe AS LONG AS mother cleans well after using the bathroom, and nothing (especially a drs gloved hands wondering what the cervix is doing!) is incerted into the vagina.

hypoglycemia in an infant has nothing to do with infection. Its caused by three things: GD in the mother before birth, Witholding food durring labor and filling the bloodstream with IV "hydration" (its a glucose mixture and baby has a sugar crash once it's gone) or seperating the newborn from the mother for testing, which delays feeding and causes low blood sugar (which is what hypoglygmia is). Can you imagine how much work birth is for a new born? they NEED the rich colstrum withing 20-30mins of birth for a good feed.

You both recieving antibiotics does not mean that there was an infection. this is protocol in any hospital where the membranes have been ruptured more then 12hrs without labor. IV is the fastest way, though I'm sorry you and baby had to go through so much.

your story is a definite reason for NOT checking the cervix pre-birth. Any exam does introduce the risk of both ROM and infection.

If you can break your water by putting your finger up there and checking , couldnt' the same thing be possible from a penis during sex , if you were dialated some ?
I'd think that the penis during sex would be much more prodding and not so gentle as we would be of our own bodies with our own hands.

And unless you are having a high risk pregnancy , they don't tell you to not have sex , they usually say it's perfectly fine and safe , and especially at the end .
I don't think I would worry too much about breaking your own water.
I would be concerned with germs and making sure your hands and under your fingernails are very clean and sanitary before putting them up in there.

I would suggest filing your nails down smooth and short , just in case too.

With my 3rd baby, I checked my own dilation every day. I ended up making my water break at 37 weeks. My water was such a slow leak I didn't notice, just thought it was urine or watery discharge. It never caused me to go into labor either. After four days I went to the hospital to find out what was going on. Thankfully I did because, I had an infection from walking around for so long with my water broke. It crossed over to my baby, she got hypoglycemia,we were both given antibiotics, and my baby had to be on an IV. I don't know about checking myself this time. My doc. said it might of just broke on its own anyway, but there is a very good chance that I caused it. This time I'm going to leave everything alone. If you have to check yourself, I think it would be best to use gloves.

If it's a girl, Annie.
If it's a boy, Jack.

Cute pic JellyK!

Well, today I am officially "full term". Last week I was high and 1 cm. He has dropped. I just am hopeful. I have no room left for him to grow at this point. Scary is that I'm 5'-7" and he takes up most of my torso... sternum to hip socket!

I am hoping that I can tell when time is nearing.

Please come on down BABY!!!!

One thing to keep in mind - unless you're entering early labor, your cervix will be very high and kinda hidden. I used to be able to find mine no problem when I was TTC, but now I can't find it to save my life, lol. So if you or hubby can't find it, don't be discouraged - if anything it probably means dialation hasn't started yet (not a guarantee though).

Good luck!

I have known a couple of successful women that have checked their cervix. I tried but never succeded. There are different ways to do this.

Sitting on the toilet or squatting or standing with one leg on the edge of the bathtub are good positions to be in. Gently insert one or two fingers into the vagina. Feel for the cervix - located in the upper front or top.

Always remember to wash your hands very well, before checking the cervix, that way you reduce the chances of any germs or bacteria entering your vagina.

I hope this helps and Good Luck!!
