I pay almost what you do Kayak mom.

I buy a pack of huggies for 32.00 it lasts 5-6 weeks and a package of 450 or so wipes for 8.99(luvs wipes) at my local BJ's.The wipes last 2-3 months.
I usually have a coupon for diapers and wipes and save $2-3 on that and sometimes a coupon for 2.00 off wipes.

I think the diapers will be fine stored for that long. Normally I use up a size before moving on to the next size, but since the girls will only be 15 months apart I've been putting the diapers in the closet and moving up to the next size whenever I feel like it. Something I've found, with all of my kids, is that they sometimes still actually fit in the diaper, but it just doesn't do as good a job after a while. For instance, Addie just moved into 4's. She is still well within the weight limit for 3's (22lbs) but the 4's (22-28lbs) seem to fit her better. With ds10, he used to leak out of his diapers and I'd know instantly that it was time to move him up a size, lol.

Addie stayed in the smaller sizes for quite some time, but she was petite. Now she's back to average. The best you can do is estimate. I know you don't want to be too far off, but if you do end up having leftovers in some sizes you can always give them to a friend or maybe even donate them to a local shelter or something. I know there are many who could certainly use them.

I bought a box of 200 size 4 Huggies at Costco the other day and it was $40! The wipes were $20 but there was a coupon so I got 832 wipes for $14.99. Almost $60 for diapers and wipes! I'm not complaining too much though because at this age, that will last the month. If you can even cut your bill by a fraction, you'll be way ahead!

Kimberly Clark makes Huggies, right? Love the baby shaped ones. Stock up on 3's and 4's, those are the sizes you'll be needing most. This last LO went through 3 packs of NB diapers, but she's the only one who did, the rest never even finished a pack. And they grow so fast in the first few months. If you get the bigger diapers you'll be able to use more of them I think.

Bri, they are packaged like they would be at the store, but she gets them because there are small defects in them. I know they are specifically prohibited from returning them, and even if she wouldn't be working there anymore I wouldn't want to get her in trouble in any way.

i just bought my first case of size 4's and my daughter is 13 mos. the 3's still fit but i just decided to get the 4's to see how they fit her. shes been in 3's since about 8 or 9 mos. so i would say get 2's and 3s and maybe a few cases of 4s for later. the 1s you will probably only use for 3 mos tops. but if you have a big baby or a baby with chunky thighs they wont last that long. at 13 mos arden goes thru about 6 diapers a day but as a newborn she went thru about 10.

thats great that you can get diaper from the plant.

oh also if they are packaged like they would be if they were in the store you can always try taking them to babies r us and trade them in for a size you need. they are usually pretty good about that. or maybe try doing it at another store, walmart/target

Holy cow! It's been so long since I've had a newborn, I forgot how many times they were changed a day!

Thank you very much ladies for your insight. I'll try to stock up on the size 2s and 3s from now on :)

How long do diapers stay good? Will they last for a year or so being stored in the closet?

MOst babies go through 6-10 diapers a day in the begining. Newborn size lasts about a month if your baby is born average size. If your baby is larger they may not last that long.
After that size 1 will last until your baby is about 3-4 months. Most likely 3 months going through 6-8 or so diapers a day. At about the time they get into size 2 diapers they go through less diapers prob 5-6 a day. The 2's last a little longer and should take your through until your baby is about 8-9 months. Size 3 will last a while. My daughter started size 3 around 9 months and is still in them at 17 months. She prob wont grow out of them any time soon. She is in the 40th percentile in weight. She might be in size 4 right around potty training age and that will be the last size I will have to buy(hopefully) My other girls were in size 4 maybe a month before they potty trained. Emily only goes through 3-4 diapers a day now.
So stock up on the 2's and 3's the most.Good luck though....free diapers are a HUGE cost saver.

Aklbell, I'd much rather be able to use the diapers than give them away, or sell them, but I'll have to remember the CL idea (I don't do Freecycle anymore for certain reasons) :)

We have a case of newborn diapers (which is 6 or 8 packs, can't remember), a case of size 1s, 2s, and 5s (5s?! lol I think we'll be saving those for a while!!). I don't think we need anymore newborns, but was wondering if we should get another case of size 1s or just stock up on 2s and 3s?

I wouldn't worry about over stocking if you have room to put them. You can list extras on freecycle or craigslist when your son grows out out of a size.

Get her to give you bigger sizes like 1-2 b/c those are the ones you will need the most. size newborn and size 1 will only be used till they are about 3-4 months then you can pretty much use size 2 diapers till almost a year old depending how much your child weighs. Mine still wears size 2 daipers and is 11 months old, next month he will go into size 3 diapers.

My MIL works for Kimberly Clark's diaper plant (so she makes Huggies). She is able to get some diapers, but we're having troubles figuring out how many of each size to stock up on. Her plant is closing the same month my son will be born, so simply waiting until he's born isn't an option. I don't want to be stuck with a ton of diapers in sizes that he can't use.

Can you estimate for me how many diapers a week your child goes through?

Thanks!
