How sad to hear that your LO has asthma. You are making great steps to help him out by quitting.

I smoked all through high school, and it was getting to where I didn't like it. I was tired after walking my laundry or groceries upstairs, and I wanted to quit. I cut back to just two a day, when I got onto BCP to avoid the health concerns. Then I got pregnant (at 22), yes, on the pill, so I just quit then.

I tried a puff of a coworkers cigarette when I was about 3 months pp; it didn't do a thing for me. That was my last cigarette.

I haven't smoked for 9 years.

I quit smoking when I was pregnant with Bryce - that will be five years the middle of this month. I knew smoking was bad for my kids, but that didn't hit home until I was doing home visits...Every one of my clients had parents who smoked. These poor kids were ALWAYS sick. There were times I would be working with one kid, his little brother would be sucking on a nebulizer and mom and dad were smoking at the table.

I knew, really knew, that I was saving my kids a lot of pain by quitting smoking.

According to statistics 7% of ex-smokers who make it to their one year smokefree anniversary will never smoke again. This percentage exponentially rises to 80% when you hit your 2 year anniversary. I joined an online group for smoking cessation on another site and learned about this.

I have a lot of info saved from both the American Lung Association and whyquit.com, and probably a handful of other reputable sites. I copied and saved the articles that were the most meaningful for me. Unfortunately most of them are so long it would take several posts to complete a single article. I read and re-read this material often to reinforce my quit. Yes, even 8 months in I am not immune from relapse. However, it has gotten so much easier. Another great incentive has been my quit meter. I recommend it to any new quitter. Mine is called Quit Keeper, but there are several others to choose from and some can be found here:

Hi Bee! I actually use a Quit Keeper. It asks for general information about when you quit and how much you used to smoke and price. Then it figures everything else out for you. It's a great motivational tool to keep quit.

wow... i have never taken the time to figure out how much i saved by quitting! i dunno if i could... it'd be a rough estimate. when i partied more (which i used to do alot), i smoked more. when i stressed more (also alot), i smoked more. you get it. but i also used to smoke between 1-2 packs a DAY (newport 100's! talk about harsh! but i liked 'em for some reason!) i smoked non-menthols on and off for 3 yrs and then chain smoked my newports for almost 6. i had half-a**ed tried to quit a few times but never real seriously. at the end of april '05 i decided to cut back to lights, and then shortly after i just didn't smoke as much. didn't feel like it. within a couple weeks i was down to a 1/2 pack a day and then on may 16, 05 i smoked my last cigarette and threw out the rest of the pack. haven't had one since!! but the cravings are still there... they've been getting pretty bad lately... luckily, i'm too stubborn to quit bfing and refuse to do that to my dd!

proud to be breastfeeding my daughter!

Hi Dena, I'll be happy to be part of the non-smoking mommy group. I actually am also part of a health forum for smoking cessation.

Anytime someone quits is a GREAT time :)

Dena congrats on 2 weeks!! SO very glad to hear that you've made it past the 14 day mark. You can do it, I know you can!! WHOO HOOO GO YOU and DH!!!

Thanks for creating a team. I may need support after LO is born. I really feel like I am quit for good, I DO NOT want to start smoking again. DH has not been able to kick the habit yet so hopefully I can keep it up. Its good to know there is a support group on BF.

Thank you!

I have tried quitting before, but this time, it just feels different. I know this is forever.

You don't have to join the team to read the info posted there. I hope it can help someone out there who is thinking about quitting. Or even info on how to quit when they decide it's time. Everything is coming straight from the ALA.
I actually have my next meeting today. We were off last week due to Thanksgiving and I'm excited to tell her that I have not smoked at all.
It's kinda like a smokeaholics anonymous.

Yeah...I know the feeling used to smoke but was able to quit easily everytime i was pregnant due to nausea, but always went back afterwards. A few years ago while lighting up a cigarette I realized it didn't make sense to want something that was so bad for me and decided there and than that i would deal with the craving and know thats all it is a craving.

I have been tobbaco free for 4 years now!feels great.

You Can do it ...do it for YOU!

thank you dena! to quit smoking is no easy feat.

I'm so sorry to hear that Bobby has asthma!

I've been "smoke free" since 6 mo. before DD was conceived, but smoked while on vacation in Mexico, and 2 times while going out since she's been born, and I rather not. DH hates the smell too. He said last time we were out, that if it was too much for me to handle (having a drink and not smoking) we could leave. But I actually went around his back and a couple of puffs. Hurts to admit it, but I couldn't resist it. Or didn't want to.

Still today, there's days I crave them, and days the smell makes me sick. But it is forever, an ongoing battle.

I must admit sometimes I dream of getting old, seeing DD grow up, and then taking hte nasty habit back up. Weird huh?

I hope more and more people take advantage of your "challenge"
