More ideas (or maybe just repeating)...

Natural Labor Induction

Natural induction is an intervention in birth. Like all interventions, they carry risks. You should encourage your clients to wait until their due date at a minimum before trying any natural induction, unless medical reasons indicate that birth should be induced, and they want to avoid Pitocin. All natural induction techniques should be discussed with their HCP. Time can be the best natural method to induce. Baby will come when they are ready. If it is forced the baby may not be fully developed. Careful consideration should be taken before attempting any of these. Advise your clients to weigh the risks vs benefits, and consider not doing this if the only reason is "I am tired of being pregnant."

Connie Banack,CD,CBE contributed quite a few of these. Thank you!

Accupressure

You may give accupressure to the area of "Spleen 6", four fingers above the inner ankle on the shinbone. It is a tender spot and you may want to research this to do it correctly. Do this three times, 10 or 15 seconds at a time, resting in between, repeating every few minutes.

z/acupressure/induce.aspx

Car Ride

A bumpy car ride may sound like an old wives' tale, but if the baby is not in a good position, sitting and relaxing while being moved by the car through bumps has worked.

Castor oil

One of the very possible side effects of using castor oil or an enema is the mom having severe diarrhea and cramping, leading to dehydration. It may also be associated with a higher risk of the baby passing meconium before or during the birth. These methods are presented here for information only.

It works by stimulating the bowels, which in turn stimulates the uterus. Metamucil works this way also. An enema also works the same as castor oil, although it is some what invasive. Castor Oils can be combined with anything that makes it easier to take from ice-cream to soda. It is usually recommended that the mom take 1 dose, then take a hot shower and then the second dose two hours after the first, and another hot shower if she feel like doing so. This has the relaxation effect needed to help start labor. Some midwives recommend vodka, but a hot shower seems to do the trick. The recommendations vary on the amount of castor oil to take. Between 3 TBS and 4 ounces for 1 dose. Always start with the smallest amount and go up from there.

Castor oil cocktails.

one large glass of orange juice mixed with three teaspoons of castor oil and one teaspoon of baking soda. This gets foamy and goes down easier.

Castor oil scrabbled in 3 or more eggs

Drink oil straight followed immediately by hot apple juice

Put 2 oz of Castor Oil in 4-3 oz. Of root beer, place palm over top of the glass and shake vigorously, drink immediately

Castor Oil, orange juice and ice cream blended

2 oz of castor oil in a Chocolate Slim Fast shake

Cohosh

Blue or black cohosh are emenagogues. They should not be used if the woman is anemic, or has a history of postpartum bleeding, high blood pressure or excessive blood loss during birth. The usual method is for the woman to take 3 to 4 drops under the tongue every 4 hours. Amounts on this vary. Another "scheme" of Blue Cohosh is to take 5-10 drops in a glass of water every 30 minutes for up to 4 hours. If labor is not regular then 1 dropperful under the tongue every hour until strong and regular. Please cllick on the names to see an article on each one. Combining Blue and Black cohosh is also effective. 5-10 drops of each one, on the same regimen as mentioned before. Used only with acceptance and/or supervision of a professional caregiver.

Cumin Seed Tea

1 T. cumin seed to one cup of boiling water, allow to steep for 5 minutes, then drink. No more than 1 cup an hour per day.

Enemas

Fleets Enema - can use herbs like blue & black cohoshes in the enema to help get contractions going. This can be effective.

Food

Spicy food has been suggested, and if she isn't prone to heartburn
why not give it a try? However, avoid causing heartburn during labor.

GoldSeal Tincture & Matrigin

Alternate 1/2 dropperful every 5 minutes for an hour until labor is well established.

Nipple Stimulation

This is a well-known method of making the uterus contract. Used by
midwives for centuries, it not only stimulates the uterus during labor,
it is beneficial after the birth to aid in expelling the placenta and avoiding hemorrhage. Since this method uses her Natural oxytocin, it is the safest form of induction.

To Induce: Start by applying warm compresses to both breasts, uncover one breast and begin use of pump. Using an electric breast pump, start by pumping on uncovered side for 15 min then switch sides and place warm compress on pumped side and begin pumping on other side, continue this alternation technique until regular strong and rhythmic contractions begin (usually 20-30 minutes) then stop...if contractions should begin to decline in strength or regularity, resume breast stimulation with breast pump for 5 min/side until the strength and regularity resumes. Contractions should be a minimum of (5) minutes apart lasting 60-90 seconds.

An Alternative Method - Get into a tub of warm water, not too hot, but comfortably warm. Soak a towel in the water, about the size of a dishtowel, or a washcloth would work as well. Drape it over the breasts. Roll one nipple, through the towel, for up to 15 minutes, or as long as it takes to make a contraction happen. When the contraction begins, stop the stimulation. After it ends, wait about 5 minutes before stimulating the other nipple, and repeat the process for an hour. Then, take a break for 3 or 4 hours, and begin again. This is much less traumatizing on the nipples than using a breast pump, and may work as well or better.

Thank you Jennifer Davis for this suggestion!

Prostaglandin

Prostaglandin is the hormone that softens the cervix to prepare it for
birth. It does not stimulate the uterus. The woman can consider making
love with her husband or partner once a day. She shouldn't get up right away and should elevate her hips. This lets the prostaglandin in the semen coat the cervix. Also semen orally has been said to help, as prostaglandins are absorbed orally as well as vaginally.

Relaxation

Have mom relax and forget about her estimated due date. Anxiety
produces adrenaline which can delay the beginning of labor. Give her
suggestions for relaxing activities at home, or use some relaxation
techniques with her. Even a glass of wine can relax her for a while.

ROM

This is done by a doctor or midwife to Induce. This should only be considered when all else has failed. It's the most invasive of natural inductions, but can be very effective. The risks associated with ROM are high though and need to be thought through carefully.

Softening the Cervix

Borage and Flax Seed Oil , Black Current Oil, 3-6 capsules, taken orally, everyday and/or rubbed directly on the cervix if bag of waters is intact, after 37 weeks.

Blue and Black Cohosh Tinctures, 5-10 drops each, in cup of water or tea, 1-2 times everyday, after 37 weeks.

Take Evening Primrose oil (gel-caps) orally 3X's per day and insert 2 in the vagina at bedtime--she has to remain lying down to keep them in. It doesn't START labor, only prepares the cervix. She can buy it at any health food/vitamin/herbal store. She can also massage it onto her cervix. She can start taking about 2 - 3 capsules orally daily at almost 38 weeks. Then about a week later she could start putting it on her cervix as long as her membranes are intact. If her membranes rupture and labor does not begin, she should shower rather than bathe, and avoid sex or anything that could introduce germs into her vagina (including vaginal exams).

For rapid ripening: Black Cohosh Tincture, 15 - 25 drops, under the tongue, every 30 - 60 minutes, will usually soften the cervix within 6 hours. Evening Primrose Oil may also be rubbed directly on the cervix and in the os and repeated after 30 minutes if necessary.

Stripping membranes

This is an invasive procedure done by a midwife or doctor. It involves separating the BOW from the uterus. Think of a balloon inside of another balloon, the midwife would run her finger in between the two layers to separate any "sticking" spots between the two. This also stretches the cervix a bit and causes the production of prostogladins. It is also known as sweeping the membranes.

I did it all too (except the castor oil) but I did try vinger shots. I had my baby 10 days late... but I had the most amazing and speedy labor ever. 6 hours from my first PAIN and I was holding my sweet litle boy... I didn't even have time for a epi! I know it feels like forever. I had a crying fit the day before I went into labor (in the grocery store talking to my mom on the phone becuase I thought I was going to be pregnant FOREVER) but it will come quickly. It think it is best to let baby come when he/she wants. Rest up now becuase you get no sleep for several months!

I did it all- castor oil, walking, sex, raspberry leaf tea, primrose oil.

Nothing helped and I went into labor on my own (the day I was supposed to be induced).

Hang in there, baby will come when ready! I know it's hard to wait.

Good luck!

PLEASE DO NOT USE NIPPLE STIMULATION!

I have just read that this is VERY DANGEROUS! Tetanic contractions may result...they can last up to ten minutes and may be VERY dangerous to the health of your baby. Please do not attemt this outdated method.

I am sure all these have been mentioned but thought I would post this article I found.

Inducing Labor Naturally: Labor and Delivery
Walking - This will help labor to progress if you are actually in labor. If not, it can help to ripen your cervix and give you strength for the labor ahead. It helps move the baby down, which puts pressure on the cervix. This pressure will help induce labor contractions.
Soften Cervix = +
Braxton Hicks Increase = +++
Induce Labor Naturally = +++

Evening Primrose 0il - This is used to soften the cervix. It is not used to induce labor, but used to help ripen and soften your cervix. Evening Primrose comes in capsule form. It can be taken up to 5 times per day after 39 weeks of pregnancy. This can also be used vaginally when the tip is cut off and inserted into the vagina and placed close to the cervix.
Soften Cervix = +++
Braxton Hicks Increase = +
Induce Labor Naturally = -

LaborBoost Labor Cream - This is a herbal cream that is used and recommended by midwives for stimulating labor. LaborBoost has powerful herbs (blue and black cohosh) that help strengthen and increase labor contractions and reduce pain. It is made with 100% all natural ingredients.
Pregnancy Magazine, voted LaborBoost as one of their top picks for belly balms! This cream is highly recommended by midwives, because it is a naturally eases the body into active labor, without having to deal with harsh drugs (Pitocin), does not cause diarrhea (castor oil), and is extrememly effective for women who are already in the early stages of labor (i.e. have dilated 2 cm or more, and/or the cervix has begun to efface). See midwife/doula and customer testimonials.
Soften Cervix = +
Braxton Hicks Increase = ++++
Induce Labor Naturally = ++++

Castor Oil - This is an unpleasant way to induce labor contractions. Although this worked for me with my first child, it is an unpleasant way to induce labor. The draw back is you get cramping diarrhea, and if you already have hemorrhoids, naturally this induction method will make them worse.
Here's are two recipes for this labor induction method:

2 ounces of caster oil in a large glass of orange juice. Stir well, gulp down immediately!!
2 ounces of castor oil-strait! Do not drink anything afterwards. Do have a mint of some sort. Castor oil is actually tasteless, but has a very thick oil consistencey that is very unpleasant.
Soften Cervix = +
Braxton Hicks Increase = +++
Induce Labor Naturally = +++

Red Raspberry Tea - This tea is a uterine toner. It will not induce labor, but does provide a wonderful supply of oxygenated blood to the uterus. This helps the uterus prepare for the work it needs to do doing active labor. It helps provide stamina and endurance, but will not naturally induce labor.
Soften Cervix = -
Braxton Hicks Increase = -
Induce Labor Naturally = -

Sex - The same thing that got pregnant can get the baby out! Sex is great for several reasons; it not only is a great way to express your love for your husband, but there are 2 things that sex does for inducing labor naturally. When a pregnant woman has an orgasm her uterus contracts which if done at the right time can start the labor process. The second way sex can help in inducing labor naturally is that the semen contains prostaglandins which thins the cervix to allow for dilation. Hospitals have inserts they give pregnant women to ripen or soften their cervix to induce labor. The typical medication is called misoprostol (Cytotec), this drug is NOT approved by the FDA for cervical ripen or inducing labor. This drug was made and approved by the FDA to treat ulcers, not to induce labor.
Soften Cervix = ++
Braxton Hicks Increase = ++
Induce Labor Naturally = ++

Nipple Stimulation - along the same lines as sex, stimulating your nipples, causes your uterus to contract, and can induce labor naturally. Some women prefer to use a a breast pump alternating breast every other 5 minutes. This can cause intense labor contractions. Stop use if labor contractions last longer than 90 seconds.
Soften Cervix = -
Braxton Hicks Increase = +++
Induce Labor Naturally = +++

Acupressure -There are two points to be used for inducing labor naturally by stimulating pressure points until it causes labor contractions. They are:

In the webbing of your thumb and pointer finger. Press around that spot hard! If it hurts it's the right place. Keep pressing until you get a labor contraction. Stop!! When the labor contraction is done begin again.

The other place is on the inside of your ankle. Find your inside ankle bone. Go up your leg 3 to 4 finger spaces. Push very hard. This should hurt. If it does, it's the right place. Do the same as the directions above.
Be careful when doing the acupressure points. Over stimulating the can cause intense labor contractions. When a labor contraction starts, stop pushing the point! Or else you will have a double labor contraction!

After trying most of the methods and only ending up with cramps, I did some squats this morning while holding onto the bathroom counter and I think that's the way to go. Some of my mucus plug came out right away and it couldn't hurt to strengthen and stretch out things anyway.

I was on the stairmaster yesterday for a good 15-20 minutes and I could just feel the baby sinking loweer down, it was weird. In the evening and all last night I've been having painful cramping/contractions.. I don't know if they will turn into anything, but at least it got the braxton hicks going pretty good. I'm going back on the stairmaster again today!

Maybe I'm weird, but I'm just not in a hurry. I'm not THAT miserable, this will definitely be my last baby, and I already know I'll be having another c/s...so, I'm just enjoying the time I have w/my other children and awaiting this new LO's arrival. Though, I DO hope I make it to September--we have too many August b.day's in the family already.

Heavy furniture... now THAT's A thought! I never thought of that. It must have created so much intra-abdominal pressure it just did the job! I'm worried though, that if my water breaks, and I'm NOT in labor, they're going to opt for c/s pretty fast. As soon as my water breaks, I KNOW I'm on the clock. I'll fight it, so long as I don't have a fever, and I think I'll fight them to augment with pitocin prior to the c/s, but I KNOW they are going to be upset, cause pitocin on a vbac is risky, period. I personally don't mind the risk so much - since the OR is litterally steps down the hall, and I am perfectly comfortable with my body, knowing when/if I'm getting into trouble - so long as I can avoid an epidural.

SO many what if's!! THAT is why I love L&D - it's NEVER the same, it's always exciting and different and each woman has such a unique and beautiful (usually) experience!

Yay! It could be your body getting prepared! Now, I wish, that our bodies had some kind of timeline... ie - 'we start preparing 10 days prior...' HA! that would be so nice.... Every little step is progress though! Watch us both go into labor at the same time! lol... I was worried about making labor buddies, wondering how many would go at the same time! Oh well!! Good luck to us both Amanda... we're nearing the finish line!

I got lucky I think with the castor oil, I think we did a very light dose just to be sure. I ended up taking two doses - one was like 1.5 ounces, and the other was 2.5 (ish) the reccomendations out there vary from 2-4 ounces. I just really didn't want to be sick!! UGH... I was fine though. We did buy another bottle today and we'll see... I might do it again tonight, a little more aggressively. OH! And the taste isn't the problem, it actually doesn't taste much at all... it's the consistency.. It's SUPER thick. cutting it with OJ is the best way to thin it for sure. the acid helps break up the oil so it's not too thick or globby. blech!

My suggestion is to do your research, mention it to your doc so they're okay with it and then just be prepared that some women feel really awful from it. My best friend 10 years ago did it and threw up so bad she broke blood vessels all over her face! needless to say - I was nervous. Thank the Lord it all went well for me! I'm just at a point where I have 9 days till a forced c/s, and I'm more willing to try things now.

Ha ha!! That's funny! I'm sure that has made a pretty significant difference for me too, and it certainly doesn't hurt Dh's mood! lol...

Tried the castor oil last night... got some really good contractions, definately cleaned out (sorry tmi) wasn't too bad, but I'm STILL PREGNANT!!! LOL! I know I dilated or effaced some more as a result cause I'm having a little bloody show (indication of change - not labor though) So, it was worth it even if it only gets me two steps closer. PLUS, I like other women would like not to worry about poo-ing while pushing!! Unless it takes days and days more (which I don't expect) I'm good for a few days! Ha ha!!

I was wondering the same thing, but that may be just because I am not at that point either of being tired. I do understand why these laies are wanting this info because it is better to go natural then alternitive medical intervintion. Good luck to you all.

I may be crazy but I am hoping to atleast get to the due date I have a feeling he is going to be a late one.

Like Kaysey, I am going for a VBAC and don't want to go over either for the same reason. I can't be induced if I am late and would then end up with repeat c-section. So, have been walking, having sex, eating pineapple, drinking the raspberry leaf tea, etc....trying to avoid a c-section with this little kiddo!
I haven't started the evening primrose though....not sure exactly how to do it. Does anyone know... Do you just push the capsules up into the vagina whole? How many and how often?

Thanks for explaining to me. It makes more sense now. As usual, it sounds like these decisions are being made based on what's best healthwise for you and your babies. I would want to avoid a cs/be done with the agony of bedrest too and especially if the baby is ready to go. The nice thing about these self-inducing techniques is they sound relatively harmless and sound like they won't work unless you're ready to go anyway. Thanks again for helping me understand, and good luck!

Kaysey..could you post that article for the acupressure?

Danehound..for me, I've been on bedrest for over a week with back problems and will be until the baby is born, I'm in a pretty good amount of pain and I'm doing all I can not to take pain meds for the baby sake. And I've had bad reflux since May so I haven't slept in months. So, now that I know the baby is full term and fully developed I'm ready to go because even though I know being a Mom is the the toughest job around and I'm scared to death, I know physically I will feel better once the baby is born as the problems I am experiencing are pregnancy related and hopefully will go away soon after he is born.
Plus, I can't wait to meet him. Feels like Christmas when your 5, you can see the package sitting there all day and you just can't wait for the day to unwrap it!!

Danehound - - for me, it's because if I don't get labor to happen 'naturally' for me I will be an automatic c/s. Due to having had a previous c/s my doc will NOT induce if I go over. And due to my history (my body has yet to do this on it's own) I feel most comfy giving my cervix a few little nudges. To me, the risks imposed on baby as well as mommy in a c/s are worse then any risks of trying to go a little early. LITTLE being the key here! I'm due in 5 days, and my doc will only let me go 5-7 days overdue, period. After that I'd wind up with a scheduled c/s!

Many other moms have other reasons varying from medical, to avoiding a big baby - thus avoiding a c/s, or even being tired of being safe, and knowing baby is full term - thus unlikely (though never a guarantee) to have any problems.

DANEHOUND-- I feel the same way, I would rather be late than try and make the baby come out early, however I know that I am not at risk for having a big baby. I am also pretty scared about labor and raising a baby... so I need a few more weeks.

I've had to be induced after my due date with both of my kids and I have really big babies. My goal this time is not to have the baby early but just not to have to be induced with pitocin because I go too far over my due date or because this baby gets too big. My doctor gave the okay for me to start the Evening Primrose in the 37th week just to try to help my body get ready.

I think here in a week or so im tryin sex atleast, im 1cm and i have a gut feelin i may stick there. But her head is REALLY super low..and i hear that helps u progress. There is no way that i can get induced a week early...my midwifes dont beleive in it unless its really needed health wise, but i dont wanna go that route unless im over due.

That was an excellent article on accupressure. Mind if I post it for more to see? It is worth others sharing it with their birth support!

I've heard the ones that work the best are sex, walking & nipple stimulation. Though sex isn't much fun if you aren't getting all the way there. :(

If you do go that route you're supposed to lay on your back afterwards so that the prostaglandins in the seman can soften your cervix.

I tried these 3 methods last time around when I went a few days past my due date. The nipple stimulation gave me some really stong, painful contractions but not much eles.

It's papaya, not mango!! Just to clarify.. AND you can also get papaya enzyme in pill form.

Most everything else has been mentioned. If you do anything else that you notice makes you contract do it a lot!! For me - everytime I walk up the stairs I contract! Now if only I had the stamina to do stairs for an hour or two a day! lol...

I also get strong contr. every time I drink too much water and get a too full tummy.

I just started doing some accupressure last night. It was VERY effective... I don't know if it helped or not - because it's been two weeks since my last exam, but I'm dilating now! So hopefully.. If nothing else I had strong enough cont. that they woke me up a couple times last night, and when I woke up this morning they were consistently 4 minutes apart for a halfhour before I got into the shower.

The pp who mentioned the foot rub was basically talking about pressure points that were being massaged.

My baby's still really high, so I'm working the birth ball right now to try and put some pressure on my cervix.

good luck girls!!

Oh yeah - licorice (the GOOD strong, REAL stuff) is rumored to help. Some doctors/pharmacists tell preggo mom's to stay away from it early in preg. for that reason.

Another word about castor oil - it can affect the baby similarly to how it affects you, resulting in meconium in your amniotic fluid, which can result in aspiration and possible pneumonia - avoid it - it's not worth it.

I tried all the natural ways (walking, nipple stimulation, red raspberry tea, sex, birth ball bouncing, etc.) and my last baby still had to be induced two days late. Like others have said, unless baby's ready, I think it's hard to get things going!

All these things can work depending on the person, HOWEVER inducing yourself only works if your baby and body are ready. Also keep in mind you do not want to induce too early. Until 38 weeks your baby's lungs are not ready. Another thing to add to the list a foot rub. I know two people who went into labor while having a foot rub.

If you have an exercise ball.. sitting on it and rocking your hips side to side is supposed to help the baby come down. The swimming is good too. The "O" is hard to achieve at this point for most of us!!!!

I didn't plan on the castro oil, cause all I can picture is me pooing all over the place while in labor... LOL!
I am definitely staying hydrated though, and will get better about walking very soon. I sit at a desk, so walking isn't a big part of my day.

This might be TMI but I found a sex position that really works and it is the only thing making me "O". Plus my DF loves it too... Mommy message me whoever would like to know what it is...

I have tried sex a little... but I can't seem to "O" don't know why... grrr.... and walking will be my thing next week. I swam last night, and it seemed to help the contractions, but not close enough to get excited about.

Good luck, I would try the sex and walking those are the better and more pleasant suggestions. I wouldn't do the castor oil!!!!!

I had planned from the beginning to be induced for several reasons... My doc doesn't think I will make it to the date, but It's always nice to know that in a week or so I can try and help things along a tad

I know there was somewhat a thread like this, but I can't find it. I am scheduled to be induced a week before my EDD but once it gets closer I want to try and help things along naturally to ease the induction process....
So, here is what I have got, anyone got anything to add?

Sex
Real spicy food
Swimming
Castro Oil (last resort)
Walking
