Ahh - I'm sorry Haley's sick. Jamie had a weird bug that was misdiagnosed as pneumonia last week, as well. Although his chest x-ray was what confirmed that.

As far as the icky meds - have you tried mixing it (or chasing it - whichever is easier) with some jelly or applesauce? I hope she's on the mend soon.

Update:

Haley had a reaction to the azithromycin that caused hives, rapid breathing, and a high fever. So I got her back into urgent care and they gave her a dose of steriods as well as a lower dose of amoxicillin. The ER Dr. thought that it was croup rather than pneumonia which I tend to agree with.

She is doing a bit better today, still coughing a lot, but her fever has broken. Now does anyone have a suggestion for giving her some really nasty tasting prednisone??

I think for a conclusive diagnosis an X-ray would be needed. Maybe considering her symptoms she figured it was some sort of infection, but wanted to give it a name for you? Twice as a kid I had pnumonia and I'm pretty sure both times I had an x-ray to make sure.

I'm so sorry that she's sick! I don't know about how they diagnosis pneumonia in kids, but I have a history of asthma/breathing problems when I get really sick. They always do an x-ray to confirm pneumonia. Did they do a nebulizer/breathing treatment in the office or prescribe an inhaler?
Hopefully the antibiotics will do the trick. But if you're worried about it and she doesn't improve 48 hours after starting antibiotics and rest, or seems to get worse I would take her back in.
Wishing you the best. Let us know what happens.
