Natural Ways to Induce Labor

I just have to say this somewhere..
I understand that if someone wants to induce labor just for the heck of it or for convenience, you might not approve, however:
My doctor WANTS me to try and induce labor and I can't read one message board post or article without someone saying they're upset at all the ladies trying to induce. I'm scheduled for induction, but my doc can't get me in as quickly as he'd like, so he wants me to go into labor as soon as possible. Just consider that it might be better than pitocin or other options to induce yourself. It's impossible to find information about natural induction without someone being sad that women are trying it... I get your concern, but just realize some of us might know what we're doing, too.

I actually just got my balm in the mail now. I was reading it and it says to apply to the belly. The post about putting something into the vagina was the primrose oil. I won't go that far! I am actually walking with a cane right now and pretty much confined to my house because of the way the baby is sitting. She is pushing on my siatic nerve so my ENTIRE left leg, butt and hip is numb. I am in so much pain. This is why I am so eager to have this baby. I would never do any thing before 38 weeks but I really need to get back to a normal life.

ohh i read someones post that said they put it in the V to soften the cervix or some crap. either way, im still pro to letting nature take its course and going into labour when your body says its time. i know it's not any of my business what other people do im just stating my opinion. like i've waited so long already what's two more weeks when he's going to be here my whole life.

I totally agree with you JEN555. Cohosh is a natural herb they give women who are going through menopause anyway! It's used as an alternative for hormone therapy!! My Mother takes it! So why would you want test it anyway? And yes some midwives use it to try and induce labor, but you shouldn't try to induce labor unless there is concern for the safety of the baby. Check out the website posted at the end of my message too, it tells you the side effects of using things that contain blue cohosh for labor induction! There is also evidence in studies that it can cause birth defects later on such as heart conditions! So please research it more before you try it, be careful ladies!

Jen555,
If you read more about the labor balm it cleary says: "this will only AID your body in producing and regulating contractions, if your body is NOT ready it won't do a thing"
Also, I am NOT using it yet and don't plan on it until I am 38 weeks! Just like ALL the other ways people have listed on this post to NATURALY induce labor, if your body is NOT READY NOTHING IS GOING TO WORK!

im just gonna post some stuff i got from this website

"A normal pregnancy should last about 40 weeks. That amount of time gives the baby the best chance to be healthy. A pregnancy that ends between 20 weeks and 37 weeks is considered preterm, and all preterm babies are at significant risk for health problems. The earlier the birth, the greater the risk."

I just wanted to let everyone know not to use black and blue cohosh without asking your doctor. I think the belly balm is probably fine since its applied to the skin so you are not absorbing too much of the drug. The reason why I say this is because my Mother had 11 babies and always had really easy labors/recoveries but tended to carry late so with her last one her midwife suggested black and blue cohosh I don't know that it helped her go into labor earlier but she did hemmorage (side effect of the drug) after the labor so bad we almost lost her (she had homebirths). I think the fact that my Mom's iron was always on the low side also had something to do with it, but I know alot of the ladies on here also have low iron. SO just be careful I wouldn't have said anything but if something did happen I would feel really awful.

Another big thing that will start contractions is dehydration. I went walking Wed night and apparently didn't drink enough water. I was in L&D that night. They gave me shots to stop the contractions.

Ok I have a queston: With the nipple stimpulation, has anyone tried using their breast pump to do this or is that dangerous and will it make the colostrum come out before the baby can get it? I don't know if this is a stupid question or not but I was wondering.

I definitely are with you all, I want it out... NOW! but as huge, inflated, ready to burst, uncomfortable and pain that I feel, I know having a newborn is usually harder than being pregnant 1- you can't hear them crying, 2 - their food is taken care of, no three hourly feeds 24 hours a day! 3- a trip to the shop requires several hands, one to hold my three year old, one to carry my bag, one to hold the shopping basket, one to get the money out of my purse.... ok I am freaking myself out now.

SO I wonder what can keep the baby in!?

hey Roxio- I think with the eggplant parmesian (sp?)it is actually the basil thats in it that is supposed to "help" with starting labor. I read a similar article about it, you could also try some sort of pesto. Good luck and let us know if anything works!!
take care

Hey Jen, don't feel bad. We all go through the motions......today we're adamant about something then tomorrow who knows.

I'm honestly in no rush to have this baby, I wouls like her to come on her own will, but being that they want her here at 38 weeks........looks like I need to get creative.

So today......10 pounds of Eggplant and Chilli Peppers.....

Eww the thought make me wanna puke.

I think I'll stick to walking and screwing......not at the same time of course...

As for the nipple stimulation --

In "What To Expect ..." it said that the women who tried this and it worked for, you had to do the nipple stimulation for three hours a day! I don't know if anyone has that much time "on their hands!"

You know...this is going to sounds REALLY bad and I hope I dont offend anyone!

In the beginning of this pregnancy(remember this is my FIRST) I would read the posts on the months that were giving birth or close to it. I couldnt understand why ladies would even FATHOM trying these things to get their babies out. I felt it was SOOOOO selfish of them. Granted, I didnt, and never would, say anything being that its not my business...

HOWEVER....finally being in their "seat", so to speak, I can completely understand where they were coming from!! In fact, I feel guilty for even thinking that before. I have been so miserable with a sinus infection and dealing with pregnancy on top of it the last few days...I wouldnt mind if Hannah got here now!

That being said, I know that there are many others out there more miserable than me and I dont blame you one bit!

I refuse to drink Castor Oil or anything like that...but ya better believe I'll be a walking fiend! LOL

Its a shame sex is out though....

I hope I didnt offend anyone--I was just trying to explain how my feelings have changed over the past few months LOL

Here are some of the most common methods women try to induce labor naturally

Sexual intercourse - This works in two ways to induce labor. First, female orgasm can bring on contractions. Second, semen contains prostaglandin. Prostaglandin work to help ripe and soften the cervix.

Nipple stimulation - Stimulating the nipples triggers the production of natural oxytocin. Oxytocin contracts the uterus .

Accupressure - Accupressure may be helpful in inducing labor. Some pressure points you can try are the roof of your mouth, the webbing of your fingers between your pointer finger and thumb, and above the ankle about four fingerspaces above is a pressure point.

Stripping the membranes - This can only be done by a health care provider. Your doctor or midwife will separate the bag of waters from your cervix and this is thought to help encourage labor to start.

Raspberry Leaf Tea - Raspberry leaf tea is not actually known for it's labor inducing properties, but it is believed to be helpful in toning the uterus and helping with labor.

Cinnamon stick tea - Take cinnamon sticks and boil them into a tea and drink. It actually tastes good so even if it doesn't bring on labor it may help you to relax.

Evening primrose oil - Evening primrose oil comes in small capsules similar to vitamin E. It is believed to help soften and ripen the cervix.

Walking - Walking may help to get baby to drop into proper position.

Visualization/relaxation - Relaxation can help with labor induction. Try doing relaxation exercisers. They are also good practice for when labor actually begins.

Pineapple, cumin tea, eggplant parmesan, and spicy foods - are another thing you can try.

Other methods we do not recommend for inducing labor

Castor oil - Castor oil is also used for inducing labor. It tastes horrible! It is likely to make you feel sick and it probably won't work.

Herbs - There are other herbs you can use to induce labor. Without consulting your doctor or midwife we do not recommend the use of herbs.
