I tried castor oil with my 1st and nothing happened, I only took one dose because it tasted horrible, but I didnt even get loose bowels. This time around I am using EPO (Evening Primrose oil) 3 capsules daily plus 2 vaginally each night to soften the cervix, I am about a fingertip right now and have been taking it for a week. I have also been doing nipple stimulation (although this made my colustrum start coming out-which has never happened to me before) and orgasms, along with more sex. I am trying to walk more, but I get really tired when I walk and it makes my back hurt.

I found this on the web

If you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant, avoid eating papaya or using a papaya product. Papaya is sometimes recommended for soothing indigestion, which is a common ailment during pregnancy. Although a fully ripe papaya is not considered dangerous, a papaya that is at all unripe contains a latex substance that triggers uterine contractions and may cause a miscarriage.1

The papaya enzyme that helps soothe indigestion is called papain, or vegetable pepsin. Papain is found in the fruit's latex and leaves.1 Researchers have noted that unripe papaya latex acts like prostaglandin and oxytocin, which the body makes to start labor.2 Synthetic prostaglandin and oxytocin are commonly used to start or strengthen labor contractions.

Wasn't there an article on babyfit not too long ago that said something about unripe paypaya sending a woman into labor? I'm going to look it up.

What has always worked for me is walking. During my first two pregnancies They made me walk at the hospital to speed things up-which it did. With my last pregnancy I said was ready to go the baby showed no sign of being ready. So...about 6 days before my due date I took alot of walks-5 or 6 in one day. Well that night I went into labor & it was the smoothest labor that I had so far.
As of August 1st I plan on walking again to get things going.......
Sorry but no castor oil for me-

Okay, I am a nurse, not a L&D nurse, but I am a RN. It sounds to me from all these posts that maybe castrol oil is not such a safe method. Our bodies natural reaction to any type of spoiled or poisonous food is to vomit or diarrhea. To me this sounds like putting something toxic in your body!! It may have worked for some of you all but the overwhelming response seems to be that people who tried this just became seriously sick. I am definitely going to run this by my doc to see what he thinks. I have heard of the rasberry tea and primrose oil. But again, I am going to run this by my doctor too. So I would suggest that all of you do this before putting anything in your mouth that you hear works from a friend. You can always go by the old fashion way and have lots of sex!!!, nipple stimulation, and of course walking. And please, dont dehydrate yourself. TALK TO YOU DOC/DOULA/ MIDWIFE FIRST!!!!

Castor oil does not work for everyone. I drank an entire bottle at the end of my first pregnancy and it did absolutely nothing. I didn't even get sick. I just stayed pregnant and miserable for another two weeks until they induced me.

I have also had success with the castor oil, but you must be careful, because it can also cause lose bowels.

It looks to me that it causes this temporarily when you already have Diabeties... I have Gestational, and I am definitely going to ask my Doc before officially trying it, but the way I see it, I am on medication to reduce my blood sugar already, maybe I can quit taking that and just go to the tea and it have the same or similar effect. Just an idea though... I would much rather have it be the natural way than all these drugs. We'll see though..

RECEPTIONSLAVE~ Thank you for the link.... That is the most complete article I have seen on this. And I read a lot before I was taking it to regulate my cycles and tone my Uterus to get Pregnant!
I am very wanting to use it this time too because it is what helped me into this situation... and it will probably be able to help me out... But I will be talking to my Dr first. I am thinking I will do just the smaller doses just to help tone up my Uterus before labor... starting at 36 weeks, if I make it that far... But not quite enough to enduce. There are definitely some good benifits to drinking this.

There are lots of myths about what puts you into labout. My OB told me to have sex when my son was 4 days late. It didn't work the first time and I think it dod work the second time, however, my midwife is not convinced that sex put me into labour. She said I was just ready to go! Don't rush it ladies, it will come soon enough :)

I tired castor oil, with Timothy. I waswas very sick, vomiting, and diareaha for two days. It didn't put me in labor, and beings I drank milk afterward to helps ease the desire to vomit, I couldn't drink milk for months without the thought of the castor oil. I would literally vomit if I drank it.

Anyhow, I had to go to the hospital because it made me severly dehydrated, and they gave me needles. I did have a few contractions, which the doctor said was from the dehydration. He says that the oil an help with labor, because of dehydration which can put you in labor, without the need of drinking anything extra.

Many woman go in labor because of dehydration, so if you are willing to put yourself through hell and back to go in labor, why do it with an oil, when you can just deprive yourself, and go for one of the same reasons as the oil.

Ladies, you may want to consider using Evening Primrose Oil, it will help to soften and prepare you for labor. The Raspberry tea also helps, I have used both. Another think is if you arre wanting tostart labor, through the bowels causing contractions, then try an enema. Again nothing will work if your little one isn't ready, they will just cause contraction that will later stop on there own.

Some info on rasberry leaf tea.

I have to say that I'm a little paranoid about using something to induce labour. I really want this baby to come out either on time or a week to two weeks early (so long as I'm at 38 weeks it's all good). But I'm scared of anything that could bring on full force contractions right away...

What's the deal with the Red Rasberry Tea?? My midwife and the lady I plan on taking childbirth classes from both encouraged me to drink this concoction NOW, and LOTS during labor....please explain to me again what this does to the uterus??

Just a note on the Raspberry Leaf Tea... It tones your Uterus by creating small toning contractions... (I used it to prepare my uterus to be Pregnant) AS I have read, sometimes this will cause you to actually increase the intensity of the contractions you are currently having, or in same cases get your body into the motions of labor... So it can go either way. From what I have heard it is much more pleasant than caster oil, but a the wife of a guy I work with is a Doula and she has had all of hers at home and she said that she uses Caster Oil and always has the babies within 2-3 days at the most from when she takes it... if not withing 24 hours. And I agree with the statement "What is a little Diarreha" so you don't poop on the table. I know it is totally natural... and possible to happen, but eeew... I just bought some Fiber suppliment to make sure I am "regular" Before I have her so that I don't end up with this... We'll see... this is my first as well, so I will tell you if it works when I do it, but until then it is just hear-say...

I am a first timer too, so this is second hand information. I was told by doula to only try and induce after you've hit 39-40 weeks. Anything earlier than that could produce an infant with immature lungs. Second, she suggested speaking with dr before any castor oil or herb concotions are used. Aside from that, she said try SEX and FOREPLAY, and walking!

Well I can tell you from experience:

Firstly the Rasberry Tea Leaf is good for strengthening your uterus in preparation for labour. I think I started drinking it around 35 wks or something last time. As far as I know this will not induce labour.

Castor Oil. I took it in a concoction my midwfie gave me when I was two weeks overdue last time. This will not do anything unless your baby is ready to come out. It did give me diareah and did not put me into labour. I ended up getting induced again at the hosptial. I will be taking the concoction again if I go past my due date because has worked for a lot of people and to be honest, I think the diareah it gave me prevented me from having a bowel movement on the delivery table and if I can prevent it, what's a little diareah... That's just my opinion. If you are going to do the castor oil, I would start slowly on the dosage. There are websites about it. People have had many different experiences using it, some good and some bad. I think it works totally different for people.

I have to agree with RECEPTIONSLAVE and KBLAND on this - everything I've read about castor oil says it brings on contractions by making you sick. Not very pleasant, if you ask me.

I've been told that rasberry leaf tea is extremely effective. It brings on contractions. Hard and fast though.

My doc told me that castor oil can make you very sick. The reason that it generally works is that it gives you diarrhia (sp?) which in turn stimulates contractions. But if the baby isn't ready to come out, castor oil only makes you sick.

There are so many different ways to induce labour and most of them don't work. My DD was sooo late. It took the Doc rimmimng my cervix three times to put me into labour. Ugh. I'm definitely trying the tea time.

How long does it take to work? I don't want to do that and then end up waking up in the middle of the night gushing water around the house! :)

The most effective way I have found is taking 2-3 tblsp of castor oil and it will break your water and put you into labor!! I have seen it work many times!! My mom used it everytime and she had 4 pregnancies and it always worked no matter if she was taking it early or late!! I have seen it not work only once with my cousin though, but it works more times than not.
