Here is the breakdown if you don't want to argue with people like my husband (who refuses to see it as 10 months).

Month 1 = Weeks 1-4
Month 2 = Weeks 5-8
Month 3 = Weeks 9-13
Month 4 = Weeks 14-17
Month 5 = Weeks 18-21
Month 6 = Weeks 22-26
Month 7 = Weeks 27-30
Month 8 = Weeks 31-35
Month 9 = Weeks 36-40

It ends up giving you 3 - 5 week months, but I find it easier to tell people that aren't are up on the weeks as we are.

KIMNJOHN...week 20 completes your 5th month, so let me break it down so it is not confusing.

4 weeks: 1 month
8 weeks: 2 months
12 weeks: 3 months
16 weeks: 4 months
20 weeks: 5 months
24 weeks: 6 months
28 weeks: 7 months
32 weeks: 8 months
36 weeks: 9 months
40 weeks: 10 months

But like everything else everyone is going to count differently so this is just how I have learned to count it and it makes perfect sense. But we all know that we are pregnant 40 weeks so I guess it doesn't matter how we each count the months, it is just confusing to me when I see someone that is due at the end of July (29th) and are saying they are 4 1/2 months. But who cares I guess.

Ok now to REALLY upset everyone - the "wheel" that most doctor's offices use is based on 10 FULL months - as in almost 11 months. A girl at work got one from her dr's office and showed me - THAT IS OUT OF CONTROL!!! I have always known that it's a FULL 9 months, but a full 10 months, come on! I'm 17 1/2 weeks so that's what I tell people when they ask, but like Dawn said, people don't know the weeks, so they want to know months. I guess I'm just barely 4 months? I don't know. But I've been saying just about 4 months.....

I count in weeks or months. When I count months, I go by my due date. I am due on June 27, so on February 27, I will be 5 full calendar months. In weeks, I will be 22 weeks on February 20. The difference in the 9 month/10 month pregnancy is whether you count calendar or lunar months. In calendar months, your pregnancy is about 9 months, and in lunar months ( 28 day per cycle or 4 weeks per month, it is then months) it's 10 months. Does that make sense? I guess you just have to be clear whether you are counting lunar or calendar, that's all, and not mix the two, b/c you will get confused.

I have learned to never count in months anymore. I count weeks only. 40 weeks pregnant so it's a lot easier for me to explain to those who don't know women are pregnant for 10 months!

Kim, the 5th month is weeks 19-22. So this weekend we'll be 4 1/4 months!

It makes perfect sense to me. I just get a kick out of people that are due like on the 29th and talk about that they only have like 4 or 4 1/2 months left. Which is not right. I just don't want them to be disappointed when they hit their 9 month mark and then still have like 4 more weeks at least to go. With my first I was pregnant 9 days into my 10th month, very frustrating and then my son came on my birthday, lol. I am hoping this one doesn't come to early ecause he is due 3 weeks after mine and my first son's birthday. I guess it would be easy for my husband ot only hae to remember one day for 3 birthdays and it's father's day this year. I am glad I am not the only one that is frustrated with this subject.

From what I understand is that at the end of a pregnancy we have completed 9 months so we say 9 months pregnant b/c it is 9 FULL months and we will be entering the tenth month when we actually give birth. It's just like the weeks. I have completed 20 weeks but am in the 21st week. Does that make sense?

You're right that our gestation period actualy is 9.5 lunar months (28 days) and 10 lunar months if you add on those two weeks between menstruation and conception. I think the idea of the "9 month" pregnancy is based on calendar months (30 days) and doesn't include the 2 weeks before conception.

I know - I get so confused over this concept! The what to expect book says ~18 weeks starts your fifth month, but I was thinking "that's not five months!" It's so strange to me!
