We just PCSed from RAF Mildenhall (a mile from Lakenheath) and we loved it there. Mildenhall is a very small base so we did all our shopping/activities on Lakenheath. It is a good base...I like the OB/Family practice clinics there, the peds clinic is hit or miss I had a Pediatrician that I really didn't care for when we first got there but was able to move around to find one I liked at the end. I agree with the previous poster you will start to miss the conveniences of the states once you are there for a while.
We were only able to shop on base because the Cost of living is so high! Let me tell you I was very happy to beable to stop shopping online constantly. My suggestion is to set all your bills to online payments (it takes 2 weeks or more for mail to get there) as well as to go ahead and buy anything special you are going to want for the baby/kids NOW! Once you get there the selection on base is extreamly limited and off base will cost you a fortune! Plus walmat.com and target will not ship alot of items to APO addresses ( I couldn't get them to ship me an ink cartridge for my printer!).
Now that I have scared you half to death let me say it is a wonderful place to live. They are very laid back in general. There are no fastfood restraunts/gas stations on every corner like in the states. You actually have to go in to restraunts to eat, lol. Plus there is tons of places to go do sightseeing. We LOVED Scotland which is only acouple of hours drive.... We will definatly be going back there eventually! We just needed to see the sun again for a little while :)
Hope you have a wonderful flight over...if you have any questions please let me know we just left last month so I may still be in the loop :)

Hello, My husband and I are both active duty and stationed at RAF Lakenheath. England is nice, the summers are very mild and the winters are long and cold. We like it here, you will defiantly miss the many conveniences of the states. You do all your shopping on base and online unless you want to pay the off base exchange($2.09=1 pound) so it could be a bit expensive. You can travel any where and it is fairly cheap. It is a good place for families if you can survive the pace of the base. I am here on a special duty and my husband is in the COMM Squadron so we are on the slower than the flight line but it is still a busy pace and everyone deploys, but I think that is everywhere now. Hope this helps but if you have any questions just email me.

I am new to baby fit and was wondering if anyone was living at lakenheath? (sp) My husband is currently an instructor pilot but we just found out we will be moving to NC for F15 E training in August! One of our options for bases after training is England and i was just wanting some input on what its like and if people like it!
