I just delivered my baby girl at womack on march 26th. I had a Midwife, Sara Ohm and she is really nice I liked her very much. She makes sure to spend time with you at your visits and doesn't rush you out the door.

just an FYI, i went looking and there is a very small group (of 2 right now) that have started a fort bragg mommy team. if any of you wish to join. enter the mommy team page and 'search' for fort bragg. it should pop up for you. only if you care to.

I was just thinking itd be a good idea for someone to start up a Ft.Bragg/Pope AFB mommy team. There are a lot of young moms and their spouses who deploy so a good way besides the FRG meetings would be to hook up onto babyfit and there'd be different forums for different units and stuff. i dunno, seems like a pretty good idea to me....... so questions can get answered as far as deployment, motherly support, daycare within moms and etc. Does anyone agree?????????????

hey.... i dont want to say id stay away from any. however, my friend just delivered her 6th...i know, its amazing. anyhow shes delivered 6 at womack and had capt. johnston. she really loved him. yes, he is a male, has 6 children, and is the lactation consultant at the hospital...crazy, isnt it? she said he was really cool though. hope that helps! i had marceal johnson with my daughter. ive heard good things about her but personally i wanted to try someone new this time. she striped my membranes without telling me what she was doing which was very painful.

My due date is set for October 17th...so we think so far anyway. The last OB I went to for my daughter did ultrasounds at almost every visit. I get the feeling it won't be that way here. I'm kinda bummed about that. Plus I haven't heard from the OB clinic about when my first appt. is. Is that normal here? I got them to transfer me to Womack to the OB clinic there. I'd rather go ahead and be seen by the docs that will probably deliver my baby.

congrats armymama on the new baby, we also go to Joel though i haven't been yet, since we moved here.
i e-mailed you yesterday, we have been to Fl my husbands grandmother died so we were gone a week for that, and that is why it has taken me so long to get back with you.
i am hoping and praying that i get Pg this month maybe this week if i have counted right, and if my body has healed completely from the miscarriage. which i think it has.
oh well congrats and let me know when.

Hi! My hubby's at Ft. Bragg and I think I'm preggo with my second. Just have to get the blood test done. I had my first living somewhere else. What would you suggest as far as where to go for an OB? Usually I go to Joel Clinic.

What is the longest wait that you have had for an OB visit at Womack. Is there anyone that has topped my almost 2 1/2 hour wait?

I had a dilemma with Womack OB clinic that left me unseen. I had a 5pm appointment and was called back around 6:40 to the observation room. I was thinking that she would come in within the next 10 minutes. By 7:20 I figued I had had enough and walked out. Only to see the doctor sitting in her office on the computer~~~~~ My husband called from Afghanistan to Tricare and I now get OB care off post and will deliver at Cape Fear. I will also keep full Tricare Prime.

They will tell you that you don't have an option and that Womack has to release you, but I did not have to. It is tooooo many pregnant women here on Bragg for a team of about 10 people to give proper care.

Oh thank god! I was really stressing over the whole no epidural thing. I had one at only 3cm with DS and progressed just fine. It took me forever to get to 6cm with him and I was dreading having to do it w/out the epidural.

I do feel like I have a medical reason for wanting an ultrasound. DH was in Iraq until the very end of October last year. We started trying to get pregnant as soon as he came home so I was really on top of things and I'm pretty sure I know exactly when we conceived. The due date the doctors gave me would mean I would've gotten pregnant before DH came home. So I do think they're off with the dates. Plus I have a very narrow pelvis and have been told by several different docs that I probably would not be able to vaginally deliver a baby much larger then DS (6lbs.). I have gestational diabetes so I'm at risk for having an extra large baby to begin with. I know u/s are not always accurate but I want a guesstimate of the weight. I don't know why they wouldn't automatically give a 2nd one at all. I had one w/DS to check weight, make sure he was head down, etc. And they can obviously do them quick and conveniently in the clinic since they're giving them to their pregnant nurses whenever they feel the need to be reassured of the gender!

I go to family practice at Womack. I always hear other people complaining about the other clinics but FP isn't much better as far as I can see. The receptionists are rude and don't know what they're doing. Starting at 9 weeks they wanted me to have weekly OB visits. I have had to remind my doctor when to put in for my bloodwork and now I just found out they don't do 2nd ultrasounds here...although the nurse was nice enough to point out she got to have 4 of them as her "perk" for working in the clinic. Plus now I havn't seen my doctor in over a month because he's always either on leave or just booked up. I'm pretty sure he won't be around when I deliver. And I just heard a rumor that they don't give epidurals at Womack until you're at least 6cm, which is crap if it's true.

Hello to all Ft. Bragg and Pope AFB moms, my name is Erica and this is out second tour back at Bragg. I just found out that we are pregnant with a due date of 12-31-06. We have been waiting for housing since 12-05 and have a date of 5-22 to move in. I currently have a 7 yr old son, who is very excited about having a new brother or sister. So are there any horror stories about birthing at Womack. My clinic is Clark and all the attendants there are always mad and frowned up. Looking forward to chatting / possibly working out with some of you.

In my experience - the IV drugs, well, the biggest side effect for me was sleepy baby. She was really sleepy, was not really conducive to breast feeding right away.

I'm going no drugs this time, that is my plan anyway.

The IV pain meds were okay for awhile. They just made me sleepy and allowed me to rest for an hour or two. Unfortunately though they wear out after awhile and as the pain/pressure increases from the intensing of the contractions, it doesn't work as well. The epideral on the other hand works very well. I could feel my legs the whole time and even wiggly my toes. I could feel every contraction but not the pain-only the pressure which I was ok with because I needed to know when to push.

Overall the nurses will tell you "its your pain" and they can't make your mind up for you. What I did was just decide ahead of time that I could go as far as I could possibly and then once if and when I decided to use it, I wouldn't beat myself up about it.

awesome, I dunno if I can deliver normally or not yet, I have to talk to my Dr. I've heard the epiderals hurt bc they go in your back and I hate the thought, I'm leaning towards just the normal IV but that depends on how much effect it will have as far as pain killers. I'm terrified of the up coming labor pains and wish it didn't have to happen lol! I don't want a C-section bc I'm too young for the scars, the stretch marks I'm dealing with but yeah. So is there much of a difference between the IV and epideral?

All I have to say to you guys who are delivering at Womack is that they are AWESOME! I've been going to the midwives clinic and Katie Downs is the midwife who delivered my baby. She's very cool. My other favorite midwives are Cpt Johnston, Ms. Horne, and Ms. Stanford. Ms. Stanford is just so sweet and Ms. Horne is very down to earth and laid back. Cpt. Johnston also has a nice bedside manner and is very straightforward and down to earth.

As for the rest of the staff in L&D, they're awesome too. I pretty much had a full trauma team by me towards the end when I had to be placed on oxygen and had such a high fever. About 15 minutes before the baby was born since they knew he was going to have a high fever, they had the entire pediatrics team standing by ready to take him, assess him, and treat him as soon as he came out.

They were all so very caring. I couldn't have asked for a better experience in terms of medical care!

Hey there to answer your questions. It depends what rank your husband is currently at to where you will stay on post. It also depends on how many children you have as well. My son is currently at Prager daycare center on post. We love it and have not had any problems with them. He has been there for 1 and a half years. You also have the option as to family home daycare. There is usually 1 provider to about 6 children ( which includes the provider's children). But if you want on post daycare at a center there is a waiting list of 3 to 6 months. From 6 weeks in up sometimes usually takes 6 to 12 months. So I hope this answers your questions if you have any more email me at Drea1713@aol.com and I will answer them. Good luck with the birth and the move.

I don't think you should need him. I didn't have mine with me for that one. You just go in, drink the drink, have your appt with the midwife if you need to talk with her, wait an hour, and have blood drawn.

But then again it's up to you. :)

So when is the amnionic fluid testing? Or am I fretting for nothing? It's my hubby's fault for reaading the pregnancy book they give you, we got so prepared for it last time but it turned out to be just a check up!
lol about Capt. Johnson, my hubby figured he'd have to have a few kids for him to even consider being a male midwifery! So I guess that answers our question about that!
Thanks for the help!

Hmm you can sign up whenever you want to as far as I know about the prepared childbirth classes. The classes taught at Womack (PRepared childbirth classes) are not about how to bring up babies. Instead they're about the process of labor, pain management, procedures at the hospital, what your body goes through, and the 'smarts' about breastfeeding (ie: why it's best for baby, the benefits, how to pick a breastpump, the various holds for breastfeeding, etc) . The actual Breastfeeding classes are separate and those are taught by La Leche League from what I understand. The childrearing classes are taught by ACS (Army Community Services) and are held at the ACS building on the corner or Knox and Ramsey I believe. I have only attended PC class and not the ACS or LLL classes.

Let's see...the 28 week appt is just checking for pre-term labor, measuring baby's growth, listening to baby's heart, and answering any questions. Yes, you will have to drink the glucola for gestational diabetes testing at this appt but honestly it's not too bad at all. It just tastes like a cheap Sunkist soda with extra sugar in it. I hate needles too but the Womack staff in the lab dept is AWESOME. I just told them that I didn't like needles and jsut to let me know when they'd prick. They did and it was really easy-one of the better blood draws that I've had before.

Yes Cpt Johnston is the only male midwife and he is AMAZING! I can't say enough good things about him. He is very straightforward but also very kind. He doesn't cop an attitude or anything like that. (Maybe it's because he has like 6 kids?!?!?!)

One area that I really like is Hidden Creek Village Apartments. The cost is good, and it is very secured. The apartment complex has a security gate, so at night around 7pm you have to use the access key to enter the complex.

The drive is about 10-15 minute drive depending on how traffic is, but mostly any entrance you go to in the morning or lunch or on the drive home you will have about a half hour before you get home.

Other than that I really think that this is a good place to live.

I think this lil guy is going to come early and I need to talk to my doc. about if normal birth is even possible, I'm worried that unless I pick up o my weight i wont be able to push down like they say too. Or maybe Im just paranoid.
So I should sign up next month?? As far as all of the other classes go do I need to go to Breast feeding classes? I don't need child raising classes bc I've been around babies and my husband took care of one as well for 9 months, so that's no big deal.
The 28 wks. visit is that the amnionic fluid testing? I know I get to drink the icky stuff and have fun for an hour, but I hate needles. I got a new doc bc mine just had her baby, Capt. Johnson, is he any good?? he's the only male midwifery doc. there! lol

The classes at Womack are not specifically Lamaze (Lamaze strictly believes in no pain meds) or Bradley method (belives in using pain meds as a last resort). Michelle Marcolongo, a RN who works in the mother baby unit is the childbirth educator and teaches the childbirth preparedness courses. She's really good! And it's free too! You just go to Womack's website or look on the resources sheet that your doc or midwife gave you, email or call her and she will add you to the class. I just got done with the December class and it was mostly moms due in Dec, Jan, and a few from Feb. I highly recommend the classes though. Michelle teaches you a lot and she's really funny too. Hope this helps!

I have a question should I be signing up for La Mas classes now? If so at womack and how much? Im 24 weeks now and I dunno!! I think it's 7 classes right? I want to make sure I get a few in before baby decides to come! I think I may be getting a C-section and he may come early. I don't have enough room right now as it is. Can someone help me out?

I STRONGLY recommend going to Womack Midwifery. None of them are in the army*I don't think* and everyone is nice. My doc is out bc she had her baby 2 days ago so I saw her hubby, Maj of the place, and he was very nice. The only guy Midwifery is Capt. Johnson, everyone else is female and they will give you another dic on the same team if your's can't make it. They have some very nice doc.s and nurse's, they joke around and treat you like a person, and a preggy one. My doc actually helped me up instead of letting me help myself, maybe something dumb but I was impressed! No complaints here!

Hey Armymama! Welcome to Ft. Bragg! I don't know what you've heard about the area but *I think* Ft. Bragg is great. It's got one of the BEST MWR programs in the Army and there's lots of things to do with the kids. As far as housing goes, DH and I live off-post. Are you planning on renting? If so, I highly recommend AAIMS Propery Management to rent from. Their website is www.rentrentrent.com DO NOT rent from Kyle Rea Real Estate. They're kinda ghetto. Hope Mills, Sanford, Lillington, and Cameron are all nice places that are about a 15-30 minute drive from post. We live in Cameron.

Fayetteville on the other hand isn't that great (or at least I don't think so.) There's a decent sized mall and restaurants and that kind of thing, but there are a lot of low lifes in town. There's certain areas like Bragg Blvd and Murchison that you'll want to stay away from at night due to homeless folks begging for money, strip clubs, and just shadiness. Downtown Hay St. used to be a bad place but they've cleaned it up nowadays. Raleigh is about an hour to an hour and 15 mins away. DH and I like to go there when we want to "get away" from it all. There's also a great outlet mall in Smithfield about 45 minutes North of F-ville on I-95. Lots of shops there.

Let me know if you have any more questions about the area. My email is in my profile.

Hello. My hubby will PCS to Bragg in April. We just had our first little one Nov. 12. Just wondered if anyone had any suggestions about living on/off post (and where), or anything else that you think we ought to know. Thanks.

Hey everyone thanks for the reply's
She did end up getting referred to womack for her DD and is awaiting her first appointment for her.
She is seen on womack for her pregnancy and doesnt have any big complaints with them
Her DD was seeing their PCM but he is the one that was causing the problems.
They took their DD in for a bad fever and a horrible cough spent 3 hours in the clinic and they gave her one dose of ......some kind of inhalant (cant remember the name) and took an exray then sent her home
That night her fever and cough was worse so they took her to the ER and it ended up she had bronchitis (sp) so they gave her meds.....the next day to make a follow up her PCM said 'oh ya the exrays showed she had bronchitis'
Couldnt beleive he just sent her home with nothing and didnt even tell them!
Anyway there is the story on that and why she is so eager to get to another doc.

Thanks again for your replys.

I agree they are both great... it isn't my friend though. It is me. If you my other post.. Clueless, you will read about my dilema. I am trying to get pregnant, and I might be. But I keep getting "not pregnant" test results. I tried to make a doc. appt at the Robison clinic, but as you might know... today is a training hoilday, so they are closed.......
When my time comes I will most likely get refered to womack as well, there are alot of soon to be mamma's at the Robinson clinic, everytime I go in there I see at least three....
Good Luck to you with your soon to born little boy. Like I said earlier, I really like the name you have picked out, My husbands name is Robert Bradley.

Both Robison and Womack are great. Usually I am a Robison clinic patient but since there's an influx of pregnant mommas out there, they referred me to the Womack Midwives Clinic.

Let us know what your friend decides to do!

I'm going to Womack for my pregnancy, they should let you go to Womack if you complain enough, I'm not seeing a military doctor (not that I know of anyway). I'm seeing a Certified Midwife Nurse, and I have no complaints for her.

I hope that everything works out for your friend.

Hey, I just wanted to say I am here at Fort Bragg and I go to the Robbison Clinic, they seem to treat people really good there, although I have not gone in for pregnancy, I have not had any problems with them.
Hey Merellis2009, my husbands name is Robert Bradley, so it is cool that your baby's name is Bradley Robert.

Hrmmm... chances are low that she'll get to go off base. I'm sure she isn't the first to be upset with the doctors. It's the whole military protocol that rubs moms the wrong way at times. Some doctors lack a lot of bedside manners. I guess she could just call Tri Care directly and see what her options are.

See I asked her that but she is so fed up with the whole military doctor thing she just wants off base.......I dont know.
I asked her the same thing about womack. In a way I dont blame her since she really has had several bad experiences at both places as to why she wants a civ. doc.
Just thought I would throw it out there and see what responses we got.
Thanks

Yeah is there anyway that Tricare could switch her over to Womack, Joel, or Robinson clinic on Ft. Bragg? I usually go to Robinson but they're OB/Gyn was full, so I am now going to Womack for the pregnancy. Both places have been pretty good to me so far.

I am not a big fan of the Pope clinic, personally. But you two know why :-)

Can she get referred to Ft. Bragg? There are many pediatricians available there. I had a case where the mother and doctor completely clashed and I spoke to somoene and had the doc switched and everything was fine. BUT, that was on Bragg and there are so many there it wasn't a problem. I've heard good things about the Joel Clinic.

If she complains enough maybe they will just switch someone on base. But we all know how the military can be.

Good luck to her.

As for you, any luck with the baby yet? Anything at all? Want me to bring you some spicy food and some Tums?

I am sorry that I can not be of any help. I wanted to go to Pope as it is close to where I grew up but we are going to Minot AFB.

I am from Pope and my best friend who is still there has a 10 mo. old baby girl.
She is not at all happy with the doc that sees her DD at the Pope clinic (they wont let her see the pediatrician there since they say they are full) and she asked if I could get some info from any of you about who your babies see and where so she has a better place to start at getting someone for her little one.
I'd really appreciate the help
