Breastfeeding is very energy demanding so it would be wise to maintain a correct macronutrient balance with carbs no lower than 50% of your intake. You will need higher calories until your baby starts taking significant intake from solids and breastmilk intake decreases which is usually around 6-7 months. You will always want to be at least at the increased level of pregnancy (additional 300 calories above pre-pregnancy needs) until you complete breastfeeding.

Another question: how long will I need to have higher calories before my body starts to drop fat? My baby is 12 weeks old, I am 33 years old, height is 5'7", weight 145. Also: should I be eating a lower carb diet? Nothing extreme, but I usually loose better on a slightly reduced carb diet. Or does breastfeeding require more carbs? Thanks again for your help!!

A co-worker of mine here at SparkPeople didn't want to believe it either with her first child but trusted the process. She was eating about 3000 calories a day as she breastfed and trained for a running race and got back to her pre-pregnancy weight with plenty of milk supply. Go with it, it is the only time when you really can't eat too much of the right stuff!

Wow! Who would have thought eating more to loose weight! I really hope this is the case with me. Just over the last 5 or 6 days since I've increased my food intake, my milk supply has increased as well. So, even if I don't loose weight, it seems my baby might be better off if I am eating more. Thanks!

I'm not sure how many calories I've been eating, but after reading this board, I think I may be eating to few. And perhaps that's why I can't seem to loose any weight? I have 10lbs to loose to get to my pre-preg weight. I am currently 145, need to be 135. I am 5'7". I run about 15 miles/week. My profile says I should aim for 1900-2200 cal/day. Should I eat more the days I run? What number will help me loose weight? Any help is appreciated!
