Please help! I am a 24 year-old mother of two boys (4 year-old & 5 month-old) and desperately want to lose weight. I had a c-section with both and my body's a wreck right now. With my last pregnancy, i ate right & exercised and i gained only 27lbs but 5 months later I'm still carrying around ten extra pounds. I absolutely hate the way my body looks, which greatly affects my self-esteem. My DH tries to help but it just doesn't work. Id like to diet but I'm a very selective eater and im never full. I am still breastfeeding but it's not helping anymore. I try to workout but i can never seem to stick to a routine and i don't always have the time. Any suggestions?

It really depends on your situation:
If your are pregnant, you need enough calories for maintenance + 300 calories for the baby: http://www.freedieting.com/tools /pregnancy_calorie_calculator. htm
If you are breastfeeding, you need enough calories for maintenance + 300 calories for the milk: http://www.freedieting.com/tools /breastfeeding_calorie_calcula tor.htm
If you are not pregnant or breatsfeeding, it depends on your weight at the begining and your target (i.e., weight goal and time you want to use to get there): http://www.freedieting.com/tools /calorie_calculator.htm
The higher the weight when you start (e.g., 180 lbs intead of 150 lbs), the longer the time to get there (e.g., 8 months instead of 3), the higher the weight goal (i.e., 160 lbs instead of 120 lbs), the more intense your training program is (i.e., burn 600 k instead of 100 k), the more calories you will be allowed to have per day.

Before my first daughter, I was 5'4 and 120 lbs. At the end of the pregnancy, I was 171 lbs (51 lbs over). After delivery, I was 154 lbs (34 lbs over). I lost a little with breastfeeding. I ended up at 144 lbs (24 lbs over). Couldnt do anything for 6 weeks as c-section.
I used sparkdiet. http://www.sparkpeople.com/. They have an amazing free diet program. I calculated that I had a BMR of 1600k. I tried to burn 600k per day, with a diet of 1200k per day. So, I tried to have a deficit of 1000 per day, 7000 per week. Since 1 lb = 3500k, that means that I tried to lose 2 lbs a week: Nutrition = 1200k with 7 day calorie cycle; Fitness = 90 mns stationary bicycle (600k) + 20 minutes strength.
It took me 12 weeks exactly to go back to 120 lbs and loose 24 lbs. I lost 4 lbs the first week (water I think) and then it depended on the week. Its hard... But it is realistic for all.
I hope that helps... If you cant do some stationary bicycle (in front of the TV... if you have time for TV you have time for stationary bicycle) at least try to stick to 1200k as per spardiet plan... It would take longer but will work !
You need to be patient and to force yourself. 12 weeks to change your life... Its not too bad if you think about it ;)

Great tips as always LUV2RUN! I'm always in awe of anyone who can get up as early as you do to exercise-that takes determination! Cathy

The only time I can workout is in the mornings (like 5am). Its going to be so hard once I return to work in a few months, but its worth it to me to stay in shape. I find that I have more energy throughout the day when I work out in the mornings, vs. when I don't. Can you get some exercise DVDs or hit the gym before your kids get up? Also, one way I ensure that I eat healthy with no time (I also have a 5 week old and a 4 yr old), is buying food that's easy to eat and I can just grab when I have a chance. I find that I lose/maintain weight when I eat high protein foods throughout the day, as opposed to 3 "meals". For instance some reduced fat cheese w/ apples, greek yogurt in a fruit smoothie, veggie sausages (I am vegetarian), handful of nuts, carrots and hummus, pinto beans and cheese, mini bagel w/ peanut butter. Anyway, I've read its better to feed your metaboism to keep it going as opposed to having one meal which basically puts your body in starvation mode all day.

I am a 5'4", 150 lb. mama and I am so tired of being overweight. I rarely exercise as I never can seem to find the time and I rarely eat more than one meal a day because again it is hard to find the time. I have a one year old daughter and a five week old son. How many calories am I supposed to be getting and what kinds of foods should I be eating? I guess that basically I need someone to help me know exactly what to eat and when to eat it and give me ideas on how to fit exercise into my day. Thanks for any advice.
