I just wanted to give another success story, thanks to Tanya. I was about 6 wks pp, and hadn't lost any weight for about 3 weeks. I wrote to Tanya, and she told me to increase my caloric intake. I had read this in many posts before, and I was fighting it since it went against everything I knew about losing weight. But, like Tanya said, what do you have to lose, since I wasn't losing anything my way. So I tried it, and I have averaged a 1 lb. weight loss every week. In the past 10 weeks, I have lost 9 lbs! I still have 4-6 lbs more to lose, but I just wanted to endorse what Tanya says and let everyone know that it works! Thanks, Tanya!!

That is exactly right. Strange as it sounds, going too low on calories is a common cause of getting stuck at your current weight despite dieting. Your body is designed to protect you from starvation during times of greatly reduced food availability, and when you eat too little, your body thinks it’s starving. To compensate, your metabolism will slow down considerably, making it very difficult (or impossible) for you to lose weight. In this state, your body will preferentially burn everything but your stored body fat. Eating to little poses other problems, such as nutritional deficiencies. On top of that, if you later eat more calories, your body is more likely to store these calories as fat, in preparation for a possible "famine" again in the future.

Converting the nutrients you eat into milk for your baby commands 750 calories a day. Extra fat stores are naturally deposited during pregnancy to help in this process. Because of these fat reserves, breastfeeding moms only have to eat 300-500 additional calories each day. When you are eating this recommended amount of additional calories and exclusively breastfeeding, your body will get the additional calories it needs from the fat reserves. Therefore, you should experience a slow and steady weight loss toward your pre-pregnancy weight.
Weight loss problems arise when you do not eat enough calories to meet your breastfeeding needs (equal to your pre-pregnancy calorie needs for weight maintenance plus 300 to 500 calories).
The human body is designed to protect itself from starvation, during times of greatly reduced food availability. When you eat too little (especially during times that your body is under great demand, such as breastfeeding), your body literally thinks it’s starving. To compensate, your metabolism slows down considerably, preventing you from losing weight. In this state, your body will preferentially burn everything but your stored body fat, as it continues to work to convert nutrients into milk to meet the demands of your baby.

Hi Tanya, That is such an interesting (and yes, great) concept! Can you please explain the science behind you should eat more when breastfeeding, in order to lose weight? I would love to know a bit more. Thank you!!!

Yea!!! Thanks for backing me up. I know it seems weird, backwards, wrong and all that but it truly is the one time in your life where you can eat and eat according to your hunger and lose weight. People constantly argue with me and say, "I know I am eating enough" well they could be eating slightly more then they used to but still not what they need for the amount of calories being used to produce milk.
Glad you have seen success. Enjoy the pleasure of eating and losing weight!!

PS: I lOVE the picture of you and your LO!
