So how is everyone on this thread? Any one sign up for any marathons? Halfs? I think its wonderful that everyone is so motivated on this site! I have my next race March 4th with oaktree. I've been consistent in my training so I think I will do just fine. I will be exactly 9 months post partum at that point!

I know exactly how you feel! I ran a full marathon last December, planned to do another last fall until I found out I was pregnant! Then, had blood sugar problems the whole second trimester that took me out of running. I dream about running almost daily! Hopefully you'll be "up and running" soon! My friend Amy is pregnant and due two days before me and we plan to run with our babies in a half this fall...HOPE.

I ran a half before finding out I was pregnant and was moving on to a full. I also followed Hal Higdons programs. I felt fabulous after each long run. I can't wait to start training again. I bought a treadmill last night and I am hoping to find a good deal on a double jogger. Just have to heal from my c-section first. Burcha, I am thrilled to hear that you were back to running so fast after your c-section. I had to stop running due to some issues in the pregnancy and I have dreams a couple times a week about starting again.

Hi ladies,
I'm new here and also come by way of runners world.com. I am 17 weeks and had to take 4 weeks off from running due to back injury. Now i'm walking and trying to get back to jogging. My chiro has really discouraged running during pregnancy, in general, but my o.b. says "get after it." as long as I feel ok. I ran a 5K at 8 weeks, but that was the last race I entered.
Just looking for a group to keep me motivated. You all sound like you're doing a great job! Keep it up.

There is a thread called "Third Trimester Runners" under exercise central. The thread name is a little misleading since the six regular posters there are now all post-partum but not too long ago we were third trimester runners. Four of the six regulars on that thread had c-sections and all four were back to running somewhere between 11-17 days post-op.
My son was born 4 days after your little guys. I have been runnning (albeit slowly) since Dec. 14 (11 days after c-section). After a week of steady improvement, I had to take a couple of days off bbecause my incision became infected but the doctor said the infection had nothing to do with the exercise and now I'm back to 6 or 7 slow miles a day. The number one thing we all agreed to is you have to really listen to your body and take it slowly. The plus we all had was we were not restricted from running while pregnant and so we all ran right up to delivery. Since your multiples caused you to take the 9 months off, you will want to be extra cautious -- maybe try something like walk 5 minutes, jog 1, walk 5, jog 2 etc. until you feel stronger. Take a look at the Third Tri thread -- all of the c-section Moms but one had their babies about the time you did so you may find the support you are looking for there.

Hi Kristen: I gave birth (c-section) Nov 14. I was slowly running two weeks post op. Parker will be 7 weeks tomorrow and I am back to seven days a week running 4-5 miles at about 8 minute pace. I actually feel faster than pre-preggo and was just browsing the calendar of up-coming winter races. I plan to do a half on April 1 locally (outside Detroit).
As for starting again, there is no better time than the present. Granted, I ran until two days before birth, but I started walking as soon as I felt up to it. Then, each day I added a bit of running. By 17 days post op I was running 40 minutes at a very slow pace. ThenI just worked to increase my pace. Hope this helps. Listen to your body and go easy if you feel pain in the incision.

I had twins via c-section on Nov 29. I am going to slowly start training again on Monday. I used to run quite a bit before I got pregnant with the twins, but since it was a high-risk pregnancy, I was unable to exercise.
I would love some advice/tips on how to start training after a c-section. The recovery after the vaginal births I had were a breeze, but the c-section has been really tough!!
I plan on running some 5Ks and 10Ks this year and a half marathon before the full marathon in March08.

Hi Ladies... My baby girl was born on Oct. 12th and I'm ready to start running again. I'm really interested in doing a half marathon around June or July. My longest race was a 15k which was in 2005. I did not run at all in 2006 so I'm really out of shape right now. Just wondering if anyone knows of a really good training program to follow to get me going???

I can't wait until I can start training for a marathon. I know I have six weeks left until delivery and about six weeks after that before I can start training, however my motiviation always lags at about 15 miles. I'm jealous of all of you who are already training.

Deb--so glad to hear about the news from the doc! That's so encouraging. I hope your long run goes well....hopefully not too long indoors.
Mon: you can do it! Just get out and run. Cold mornings can be nice once you get going. It doesn't get that cold here either--aren't we lucky! 5 - 10 degrees would so hard to get out and run, but not 40 degrees young lady.
I have a 12 miler tomorrow. My left hamstring is tight but I'm going to take it slowly.
That makes me feel so happy that you can continue you workouts in the gym. I guess dr. aren't that bad afterall. I never seem to call or go either...but I also don't have MS. Have fun running on that treadmill. You really motivated me to get out there. I only ran one day so far and had one really bad day on the treadmill. When its this cold I won't run outside. I know, only 40 degrees when i run...thats not freezying yet!
That is cute she can crawl up and down the stairs. i loved when gabi did that!

Sweat it out Monica!! YOu need to detox!
I practice yoga every day! I LOVE it. I only get to the studio 2-3 times a week now, but I used to go a lot more. Actually, after M is a little older, I want to go on a teacher training. I just can't leave her for so long yet.
She's adjusting very well to my not carrying her as much. I taught her how to climb up and down the stairs and she really likes that! (I always just carried her because they're so long)
Guess what? I saw my dr yesterday. And, I've been given the green light to go ahead and kill myself in the gym if I want to, I just can't run outside! lol, so that is where I will be doing my long run. I can hold on to the treadmill so I won't fall!
And, I'm starting an IV steroid treatment the day after Christmas and I will kick this thing in the butt and get back to training asap.
I feel much better after seeing my dr. I shouldn't have been afraid to call! They are feeling very positive about being able to get it back in remission with the steroids.

i thought of you last night deb as i read my yoga magazine. they were talking about nostril breathing and MS. I guess the breathing aspects really help with fatigue. Have you tried yoga?
Not sure when i'm going to fit in my long run. i just had a ton of chocolates and now feel like i'm coming down from the chocolate. :-(

Sio I'm so happy you are signed up!
Kneena-Cold showers are good. I had a cold shower after my long run. I think it helped.
My long run went really well. I was very happy with my performance. I was just abit dehydrated.

Deb, sorry to hear about your relapse. I hope your doc is able to give you some good advice about where to go now. Good luck with that and keep us posted.
KNEENA: I would suggest a COLD, COLD bath after a run not a hot one. That is better for you than a cold one. If you can add ice and sit for as long as you can. Of course it's easier to say than do I realize. I've only done it once, but may try it more often now that I'm training for another marathon.
Well I finished my 1/2 last weekend and now I'm officially training for a marathon in February. I hope I can keep up my speed work and aim for a time goal....gotta stretch, stretch, stretch.

Hey Monica, Glad you are doing so well! My ankle healed very well. Unfortunately, this past week I have started a relapse (MS) and haven't really been able to run very much. I don't know what will happen now, I have an appt tomorrow to talk about my training and see if there's anything I can do to help what's happening. So, I will have to drop out of the marathon training for now. But if at all possible, I am going to start again asap. I'm going to see if there's some way to continue cardio training without straining my legs, etc... I'll let you know what they say.
So, good luck in your long runs this week, I will be running with you in spirit!

Hi Ladies!
I haven't been participating on this thread, but I am training for a 1/2 on January 14 in Phoenix (rock n roll). I did my first 12 mile training run this weekend and OUCH! My hips and ankles were SOOO stiff by the end of the run. I am trying to stretch a lot and I take a hot hot hot bath afterward too. Any helpful tips that will make this easier on my poor joints?

When I run I see piles of dead leaves, lots of kids at the bus stops or walking to school, lots of huge trees and lots of cars!
Sometimes I see a real closeup of the sidewalk when I trip...:)
oooowww!!!! I am SORE!! It will be really hard to go out this am and run! I feel like I got hit by a truck, lol.
I just did what the trainer at the gym said. I have no idea what weights to do or anything and it's really cool there. They have people to help you set up a program! The lady they gave me did a marathon so she knows where I'm coming from and what I need to do. BUt, geez! I'm really sore! I am definitely not lifting the day before my long runs!
Have a great run today everyone!

Hi ladies! Well I did 5 today on the treadmill and 4 Tuesday. I wrote a little story about it on the racing mommy team board. :-) I will shoot for 13 on Saturday. Seems like it will be the warmest day for me in northern california. Teresa, you are so nice not to leave your baby with your parents. I would!!! LOL. But my parents live only a few miles away. That is who usually watches them. Well I watch Deja Vu on Sunday. That was cool! I love denzel. Deb what are you doing for weights? I really need to do them but use the pilates machines for strength. Ugh! You girls run alot! I love to hear about your runs. What do you see when you are running outside. Snow? Trees? Outside I see vineyards and a mountain to my right. Fun running everyone!

Hi ladies!
Yesterday started my official training period for the March marathon, yay! It's exciting to be starting again! I need a goal to feel good about, you know? My ankle is better and only hurts when stretching! I guess I really needed the time off to fix it. I took 5 days off and it worked but it was SO hard! It's great now though because it had never really healed from the 1st injury in Sept.
Congrats on 2nd place siobhan! Hey, at least you got a mug! Hope you got to do your run with the group.
Great job, Monica! You know, I felt that way too about the half! It's just like a training run, lol. I actually might do a half in april right here in my area because Runner's world is doing it so it should be a good one. They don't offer a full.
Well, happy running! This is the first time I m going to be doing speed training and hill repeats so it should be interesting!

Hi Ladies, How is the marathon training going?
I actually did my 12 miles saturday with no pain...usually my hips get a little irritated. i wore some good insoles and i think it helped. I ran pretty slow and easy. i think i had the same time out and back. i did 6 miles out and then ran back home. It was a beautiful day in the wine country.
So 13 this weekend. sheesh. I may as well sign up for a half marathon. :-)
I hope you all survived turkey day. I really need to lose these last 10-15 pounds. Any suggestions??

Happy Turkey Day!
I'm going to try and run today. It is sunny but cold brrrrr.
My orthodics won't be plastic i don't think? who knows. she said they will be great for my running. Extra cushioning.

Hi ladies!
Well, I went to yoga last night and the instructor looked at my ankle and gave me some stuff to do. And said NO running till at least sat/sun and then only if it's better. So I'm going walking this morning! I'm not wearing my running bra which will FORCE me to walk, lol. I want to start speed work next week. re:the insoles, one time my heel was hurting really bad and I tried the shoe w/o the insoles to see if it was better and it was horrible. Turned out I needed a new set of insoles!
Siobhan, the DC one is March 24th. (it's not the Marine Corps) When is the Myrtle Beach? Good luck on the Turkey Trot! The 10k Sun was a Turkey trot too and I almost won a turkey!
MOnica, I wonder how the orthotics will be? Are they plastic? I keep picturing these long plastic bars sticking out of your shoe...
Well, off to walk!

Hmm, seems like we all have the insole thing going on. I have them too!
Deb--yes I'm on the east coast (charleston, SC) but I'm training for the Myrtle Beach marathon now. When is the DC one? I assume it's not Marine Corp. I was thinking about doing one that is fairly local for easy travel this time. I'm hoping to try a bigger race next year--New York would be great! or maybe even Marine Corp....who knows.
I'm trying to do speed work but haven't done it yet. I plan to run the Turkey day race as a speed work and get more into it next week.

Morning ladies. So I went to the podiatrist and she recommend I get orthodics. I now have to fallen arches which are twisting my ankle and maybe even creating my hip pain. My insurance covers most of it so I said why not? she is also going to add extra cushion for running.
I tried my regular insoles this morning and I felt great. I did 1200yard intervals on the treadmill. But i think the treadmill is softer than the road.
Are you ladies doing speed work? Teresa were you sore after you run? I can't believe you did such a long run and you are only a couple month pp.That is great!
Deb I hope you recover fast. keep icing.

Morning deb, teresa, marathonmom How is everyone doing? well I did my 10 miler with dh on saturday and it was great til mile 8. The bottoms of my feet were aching and my hip started to ache (old injury).
So how do you work through the pain when the bottoms of the feet are tired? I had brand new shoes on so it wasn't cushioning but I didn't wear my insoles dh had bought me....couldn't find them. i wore them for the 9 miles and was fine. i'm thinking I should run on softer terrain. but then i have hills on the dirt.
today i am going to the podiatrist to hopefully get and orthodic and/or insert for my short. I know I have leg length discrepancy. So lets cross our fingers.
Deb can you get a hold of a pilates band? You can put it over the arch of your foot and Point/Flex...this strengthens the ankle. Also, Tree Pose....often will build the strength. Does balance/standing poses in yoga hurt it?
Teresa, I'm excited for the napa marathon but found myself getting scared after my run on saturday. i was tight/sore yesterday but I swam in the afternoon and did yoga and now I'm better. My calves are sooooo tight! Can you run half with your baby and do the other half without? Are you nursing? I can't belive you are already at 14miles. I am doing a beginner program. :-) Don't want any new injuries?

I should introduce myself - Monica mentioned this to me. We both registered for the Napa Valley Marathon on March 3. It will be my 4th marathon.
Awesome, Deb, to have signed up for the National Marathon. How did the 10k go? I hope you recover quickly, too.
I ran 12 mi on Saturday. So freaking excited. I am trying to figure out how to get a 14 miler in this weekend while at my parents' house. Any thoughts?

Thanks for the tip, Tanya! It sounds excruciating! I'm willing to try anything, though. It drives me nuts to not run now! Deb

OK, it's official! I signed up for the National Marathon in DC on March 24th! No backing out now...gulp!
I hurt my ankle last wed. then had the 10k to run yeserday to qualify for the marathon. Thankfully, a few extra Advil helped out and I got the time I needed (barely!) but now I need to get my ankle back in shape in order to start training seriously.
Any ideas? I think it's just a sprain. What happened was I tripped on a stick and wrenched it. It hurt REALLY bad and it's the same ankle I tripped on a couple months ago. I can flex my foot but can't extend it. Any suggestions welcome, I'm ITCHING to run but want to let it heal!

They must be good teachers. I am BIG on form. I found a great dvd called YOGA for Athletes. It works great.
What was your long for the week or are you still in recover.
Ok found my time for the Carlsbad Marathon and it was 4:18.
I have an ache on the outside of my right knee. This is normal for me since I have a tight IT band. hopefully i will keep stretching and it will go away.

I live in PA. And right after we got back to the hotel (after the marathon) I got in an ice cold bath. It HURT!! But it really did work!! Someone told me to try it because it reduces the blood vessel size and inflammation of the muscles. The next day we walked all over SF and Chinatown and I was fine!
I did have to cut back my yoga practice a lot while I was training for this first one. I used to go 5-6 times/week. Now I go 2-3. But it was down to 1-2 during the intense training. How cool that you are a teacher! I have good shoulders too, so no injuries from that. Our teachers are real picky about good form so that there are no injuries.
Talk to you later! Deb

Deb thanks for joining the thread! That is awesome you are not getting injured and doing yoga. I am a yoga teacher part time but you know how it is....if you teach something you don't always do it. I have been doing alot pilates and core work since I had lo. I got certified to teach to...but i NEED to open my hips and hammies more. I am going to try and do it two days a week. Ashtanga is good. Just be careful on your shoulders. I have lots of students that are injured. I teach vinyasa and iyengar style. only twice a week.
So, KP SF half should be beautiful. i did nike half a few years back. maybe i can join you this year. i'm thinking of Napa marathon in march. Have you done this one?

Hey Ladies, Don't mean to butt in on your thread, lol, but just wanted to say hi and congrats on the marathons!! I just did my first one in Oct and it was AWESOME!! What a great experience. I did the NIke women's marathon in San Francisco. KILLER hills! So watch out if you do SF!
I'm planning on doing the National marathon in DC in April and then SF again next Oct. with my oldest DS.
I also wanted to give you a suggestion on injury prevention. Yoga!! I do yoga on a regular basis and had zero injuries. My mileage per week was about 40-45 during training and I literally just started running in May. Another yogi in my class has done lots of marathons and we were talking about it last week. She said that till she started doing yoga, she used to get injured a lot. It really helps open your hips and hamstrings. And I have no kneee problems, not even a twinge. I do not have the patience for a gentle yoga class, so I do Astanga (power yoga). But I think any yoga would help.
Talk to you later, Deb

I'll have to take a look at Napa. It's my dad's turn to come to my 'neck of the woods'. He lives in Illinois and I live in Oregon. We already did Portland...still need WA and CA. A friend of mine wants to do the Mayor's midnight run in Alaska. I'm not sure we can swing that yet, both financially and time wise.

I've only done 7 marathons so far, so I can't critique that many. We are trying to do one in each state. Once you get 10, then you can join the 50 staters club.
I haven't done CA yet. I was considering San Diego or San Francisco, but they don't allow strollers. We've done, MO, KS, IL, MI, IA, NE, and OR so far. I'm jealous of the ironman. I want to do one...I'm no swimmer, though. That part really scares me. `

thank you so much for the info. Not sure which one. What are good ones to do? I've only done Carlsbad in San Diego. I live in California. I looked at one in long beach but it was sold out. So, i'll keep looking.
Gabrielle wants to train for an ironman so i may just do the marathon after the swim and bike LOL.
i found a pretty good program. swam for the first time in 5 months yesterday.

Oh, with regard to the 2 short runs making up a long run, I think that works if it is occasional. Training twice daily has proven to be very beneficial. However, I think that you also need to get a few long runs in for the endurance. The body needs to learn how to utilize glycogen stores. I think it would be fine interspersed throughout your training but I wouldn't do it for every long run.

Yeah, that's the article. Short, but sweet! I've done intervals anywhere from 3-6 miles. Heck, when I was pregnant, sometimes they were 1-2 miles! I would start with lower mileage and gradually work your way up over the course of the training period. This will help cut down on injuries as well. I typically start my training about four weeks prior to a marathon. This gives plenty of time for training but not so much that you get burned out.
As far as reducing injuries goes...increase mileage and speed gradually over the training period, don't do training runs over about 18-20 miles, and make sure you include a taper in your training (of course, I've broken all these rules at one time or another but I know better now). Also, if you become ill or injured during training, rest. Take the time to recuperate...and don't try to "make up time or mileage". Worst case scenario, you go slower than you wanted or you choose another marathon (rather than risk injury that you may battle the rest of your life).
Which marathon are you going to do? I need to pick one for the spring. We do them every 6 months...4 months of training and 2 months of recuperation. We still run during those two months but with less pressure and structure.

i guess my first goal is to finish a half marathon after this baby. but i know i can do it. i've already run almost two hours but the competitor in me wants to do it better and faster. So i guess and improved plan would help. The halgidon plans follow the same routine you talk about and i actually only run 3 times a week but the two last weeks i haven't go my long run in. Do you believe that two shorter run in one day, make up the long run? like two 5 milers? How long do you run during your interval/tempo runs. I'm only doing 3 miles but i used to do 5 miles (before baby#2). I am also suseptible to hip pain. i think it has to do with sitting all day! How long do you think you need to train for a marathon. My long run is 9 miles right now.

I've followed different programs. I'm at the point now that I kind of make up my own...a compilation of different types. Mainly, I have to modify it to fit my schedule. One suggestion for busy moms is a marathon training plan that involves 3 training runs per week. The basis is the 3 most important types of runs...the long run, the tempo run and intervals. Whatever you add on top of that is "gravy". It works. You supplement those runs with whatever fits into your schedule whether it be shorter runs or cross training. Go to runnersworld.com in the section of past articles. It mentions the 3 runs in the title. I will look it up again to let you know the exact names in case you can't find it. Do you have specific questions on the long runs? I could go on and on with suggestions, but it really depends on your goals, schedule, etc. Same with the training programs really. I've done hard core programs and laid back ones. What are you interested in?

A group of us in the third trimester runners plan to get a MommyTeam together once more of us have given birth. We are going to call it Run Mommy Run and will put it either under "Challenges" or "Other Groups." Feel free to join. It is a great group of women who are really serious runners.

Thank you so much for your encouragement. I am already worrying about the three weeks off after giving birth. I truly have not missed a day of running in years. Were you totally stir crazy or is birth enough to keep you sidetracked for a bit? I will definitely be one to get out there as soon as (if not before) my doc says it is OK.

Not at all...I don't think a half is out of the question at all! Of course, go slow and see how you feel. After my first, I did a full marathon 3 months after giving birth. After the second, I did a half 2 1/2 months after and a full 6 months after. I didn't have my hopes up either and I didn't push myself. But I felt like running 2-3 weeks after giving birth although very slowly. I think having that base fitness and keeping it up to some degree during pregnancy makes a huge difference. Certainly, everyone is different and each birth experience is different (C-section vs vaginal, etc). I tore pretty bad, especially with the second but still was feeling pretty good after a few weeks. Still, I knew I had to go slow and start easy. You may need to wait longer. Just listen to your body and keep having fun.

Hi gals: I am 35 weeks pregnant and still running 7 days a week. Of course, my pace has slowed down dramatically, but I am still out there. In fact, there is a group of us in the Exercise Central portion of the Community who are all third trimester runners. I am due December 9. Do you think it is too out of reach to run a 1/2 marathon April 1? Just don't want to get my hopes up too high.

I don't consider a 6 hour marathon inspiring. Lol! I can do it in almost half that without the kids but that's not the point anymore, right?
Anyway, I'm going to try to find your racing mommies team. I'm not familiar with the site anymore and that segment is new, so I hope to see you there. My training dropped dramatically after this baby...I was much more disciplined after the first, but I hope to get my act together again. My dad and I do a marathon twice a year. I did two prior to kids then the surprise pregnancy came. I was already signed up so I just kept training. I've managed to keep up the 2 a year...I just drag the extra luggage along, whether it be a belly or a baby or both. Sooner or later, it will probably have to stop but we'll just go with the flow.

Good job with the running, you guys. I haven't been on this site since #2 was born...just lost touch, I guess. I just ran a full marathon on Sunday while pushing my 2 year old and 6 month old in the double jogger. I've run marathons before pregnancy, while pregnant, with a single jogger, and while pregnant and pushing a single jogger, but this was my first with a double jogger. This one was the most challenging mentally vs. physically. I was always passing snacks up front, singing songs, etc, etc. It was my slowest EVER but the most rewarding! With kids, each race is a completely different ball game. You never know what to expect. Good luck all!

I am singing up for my first 1/2 after baby andreas. He is 5 months today and my longest run has been about 9 miles i think.

Well I just did a long run today full of hills. We have a beautiful state park here so dh and I and andreas ran. It was 6-7 miles. I usually go by minutes for my training if I don't have a mile counter. We went well over an hour, like 75 minutes. I need to get with a group and do some track work.
I just finished my pilates certification so next is reformer training. So, I will do pilates twice a week with a trainer. I started at 5 weeks pp and I love it! My core is strong again. Not flat of course!
I think AZ will be lots of fun. My friend does the marathon every year!

MBRAVO3 - San Francisco would be a great one! Those hills will be challenging, but so beautiful. Phoenix is nice and flat, so it will be a stepping stone to more challenging races I think. I joined a training program called Racelab, I think it is just in AZ. I had my first track practice last night and ran bleachers - OUCH! How about you, what are you doing?

Thanks for all of the helpful tips and advice. I am doing the Denver 1/2 on October 15. I am so excited to see other people training for 1/2 marathons too. I will let everyone know how it goes. I am also lost more than my pregancy weight by my long runs. I just can't seem to lose the jiggle belly, but the time will come.

KNEENA- Looks like we had our babies near the same date. A week apart. I am also training for a half marathon. What kind of training are you doing? I just weaned my son off breastfeeding so I'm not so worried about feeding him. I think I might do the San Francisco half that is in february, the day after my birthday. Keep in touch. Monica

Make sure you are eating well. You will not lose weight or have the energy you need without adequate intake especially for carbs.

Not yet, but I am training for a 1/2 marathon in January (PF Changs Rock n' Roll half-marathon in Phoenix). Since I started going on long runs I've managed to drop a couple pounds BELOW my pre-pregnancy weight even though I am BFing. Good luck on your race! Make sure and post after you do it so I know what to expect . . .

I have ran the Big Sur Marathon and the Chicago Marathon. Both are awesome and very different from one another. Big Sur is beautiful, but a very small marathon, only a few thousand people compared to 40,000 in Chicago. Chicago is much more festive!
I felt rough during the marathon but amazing after each one! It is such an amazing feeling to finish. The best advice I can give you is to take an ice bath after. It really helps prevent soreness the next day by cutting down inflamation in the muscles. I know it sounds crazy, but I could walk much better than the people I ran and trained with for the marathon. (Team in Training particpants).
Good luck with your events!
