At this point I'd give yourself a recovery day between doing ab workouts. You won't make much more in gains by doing them every day and run the risk of overdoing it. Make sure you include the Sahrmann exercises in the mix and avoid doing traditional "sit ups." Cathy http://babyfit.sparkpeople.com/m yspark/post-pregnancy-exercise -demos.asp

I'll check on those. Thanks Cathy! Actually, I have a question for you. How many times a week should I be doing ab exercises? Every other day and rest them between? Should I try to do a different set of 3 exercises each time to work on different ab muscles? Thanks!

Miss Mammah
I'm also 13 months postpartum and I'm still trying to shake that last 5 pounds!
My activity has changed in that I've moved to a rural area where there is not my beloved gym. I probably will miss that the most, but I love the country life and I bought an elliptical...I'm trying to work out at least 4 days a week, 30 minutes on elliptical, plus abs and light hand weight work.
Today: 30 min elliptical, 50 crunches while 3 year old DD cheered me on while coloring
I've been pretty consistent for the last month...that 30th birthday was a motivator for me!

Great job withe the walking! One tip-if you can set up a route that has a couple of restaurants on it you'll be able to stop in to take a bathroom break. Regarding the rafting, is this going to be class 5 whitewater or a gentle river ride? I'm concerned about the safety of the river and your risk of being popped out of the boat and hitting rocks. Wear a broad brimmed hat and lots of 30+ sunscreen. Reapply often and keep well hydrated. Let me know how it goes- Cathy

Got an hour walk in. Never walked so fast...had to pee the whole time. Lifted weights for upper body. Softball game tonight.
Tomorrow, I am going rafting. This is about my 8th week. Anyone have any opinions on whether that is ok or not? Being in the sun for a good chunk of time worries me also.

Cathy- It's been forever since I checked in and it looks like most of the women who were here when I was are busy with their babies too. I just wanted to check in and let you know how things are going. When I found out I had mono in late April I backed off running and lifting and tried to get more sleep (as much as you can with a baby). I was pretty frustrated with having to let my progress go and not be able to do the race series I was planning for this year. At the beginning of July I suddenly started feeling better, more energy and able to breath on my runs and my vision improved. I still feel sick and wiped out if I don't get enough sleep one night or overdo the running for a couple of days, but I am starting to feel like myself again. I am back to running what I was in the winter, 40 miles a week (almost back to my pre-preg 50 miles) and am only a few pounds from my in shape running weight. It is so fun to not only feel like myself again, but to feel like I might get to be in great shape and race fast again soon. It has also been nice that my little guy is getting so big now, that we have finished breastfeeding (he dropped all but one feeding on his own and I encouraged him to drop the last one just after his first birthday), so I have some more freedom to run in the mornings or not have to be back when he goes to bed, since DH can feed him his big boy food. I hope you are doing well and am glad to see you are still here encouraging today's pregnant women to stay active. I am so glad I did, since even with getting mono this year, I feel and look like I did pre-pregnancy a year afterward. Thanks for all your encouragement through the rough times.

Welcome this this thread! Congratulations on your pregnancy and I look forward to working with you and your exercise program. Please take a look through the information in the Resource Center-just click on the fitness section when you get there and check out all the articles on how to exercise safely during pregnancy.
You can up your biking duration to 10 minutes as long as you felt fine with the 5 minute bout. Also, it's fine to break up your exercise into several bouts each day. Whatever works best for your schedule is fine. I also like that you're planning on doing several types of cardio-walking is a great way to fit in exercise. Cathy

Hello! I'm new to the check in and I want this pregnancy to be fit. I was on Spark People for a long time and now that #3 is coming I don't want all I worked for to be for bust. A little nervous about exercising when pregnant (didn't do much with my other 2) but I know I can do it with a little support and help.
Last night did 5 minutes on the bike. Don't want to overdo yet. Working tonight but hoping for a little walk on my break.
Did you doctor say you couldn't exercise during your pregnancy? A light walking program (even this far along in your pregnancy) would be a great way to stay fit, so check with your doctor to see if you can start doing some walking now. Let me know what you hear- Cathy

Hi Allie, Hope DD is feeling better! You have a great attitude-it's helpful to always remember that some weeks are going to be tougher than others to fit exercise into. We can always get back on track when things settle down, and you've done a great job of fitting in exercise three times during such a busy week! Cathy

Cathy, I belly danced today! It was so fun and a decent work out. I also jumped in the pool and swam 500 meters just to see how fast I could do it. So all together I got in about 40 min. Thanks Amy

Hi Amy! I'm so excited that you've found a runner to do that portion! Training for the triathalon is a great way to stay motivated and I'm very impressed with you! I had a lovely 4th-went to concerts on the square (the Madison orchestra performs outside the capitol building) and it was a hot but nice night. Keep up the great workouts- Cathy

Amy, I like your sense of adventure-aren't bikes great for that! You can set out on the road and just have fun. Here in Wisconsin we have lots of reclaimed railroad track trails. They're a great way to be able to ride without worrying about cars (an increasingly dangerous situation in my area) and the trails are along beautiful areas. Glad you've found a sport that provides such fun! Cathy

Cathy, I like to say I'm "wandering around" on my bike which means I just ride where the road takes me and when I start to get tired I go home. We have irrigation to a lot of the town where I live so I can get on a ditch bank and just follow them all over. It's nice because I Mt. bike usually and this is still riding on dirt but not technical and basically flat. So a nice way to ease into those harder trails. Amy

Amy, I had to quit running because it just beat me up too much. The reality is that a great percentage of people aren't biomechanically set up to run for long distances. And, the training can cause a host of injuries from the repetitive stress. Walking is a great alternative-in fact that's the bulk of the exercise I do and I've never had an injury or ache. Cathy

Thanks Cathy, I think the Idea of skipping the run might be best. My friends keep saying if I work up to it the run won't hurt, but I used to run for at least a half hour a day and it just hurt! I finally gave up and decided to be more gentle on my body and learn to love my new curves. I was so sore all the time and just dreaded my workout I won't do that to myself again. On that note I couldn't quite fit in a workout today. Have a great weekend Amy

I think exercises goals are great! If you have knee troubles you'll need to start slow with the walking. If you start noticing knee pain then cut down your duration. Also, avoid walking on concrete-try walking on a soft trail instead. One other option is to choose one or two of the activities-say you do the swim and bike and another friend does the run. Just be careful about injuring yourself (the knee problem can sideline all exercise) and listen to your body's signals. When training with your friends don't try and work at another person's level-you can get caught up in the fun and end up overdoing it. If possible train with someone who's at your fitness level. I've hurt myself trying to keep up with runners when I hadn't worked up to their level! Cathy
