What a mess! I hope that everything turns out okay and I am glad you decided to switch doctors. Are you still having any listeria-like symptoms?!?

EVERYTHING I read says that testing for listeria requires a blood sample, so I even asked the nurse about it. She said they couldn't test for listeria with a blood sample they needed a stool sample! Since I thought she was talking with the doctor in between calling me back, I assumed she had conferred with the doctor on that. Then when I finally was able to speak to my doctor, she said they needed a blood sample not a stool sample!! I was so irate. Then my doc told me that if I didn't have a fever that it wouldn't show in a blood sample anyway. Then by the end of the phone call she changed her story and said they could test with a stool sample.

Obviously, they have no idea what is going on. I don't even think the nurse knows what listeria is!

When you were tested was it at your doctor's office or at the hospital? How long did it take to get your results back?

Hopefully my new doctor will be more sensitive and knowledgable.

Thats good you changed doctors! I just changed mine for the same reasons, bcus they dont seem to give a hoot and act like your concerns are BS. You should write your doctor a letter telling them why you are changing. I did and I hope the patients they have will get better treatment.

PS: I was tested w/ a blood sample for listeria....

Well here is another update. To make a very long story short I was NOT tested for listeria. I went through collecting a stool sample (GROSS) and I wasn't even tested!

Apparently, the nurse I talked to THREE TIMES and explained each time IN DETAIL why I was worried about listeria NEVER even mentioned listeria to the doctor. All she told the doctor was that I had diarrhea. I am so furious!! Of course the doctor said she would be happy to test me if I bring in another stool sample, as if I want to go through that again.

So, I even though I'm 22 weeks pregnant, I've decided to change doctors. I just can't go through the remainder of my pregnancy not being able to trust that when I call with a problem I will be taken seriously and that that the nurse will accurately convey what I'm saying. I never thought someone would be so unprofessional - especially when dealing with something that could potentially cause me to have a miscarriage.

So, I have an appointment with a new doctor next Friday and the first thing I'm going to to is request to be tested for listeria (hopefully with a Blood Test!).

some info I found....

Statistics about Listeriosis
About statistics: This page presents a variety of statistics about Listeriosis. The term 'prevalence' of Listeriosis usually refers to the estimated population of people who are managing Listeriosis at any given time. The term 'incidence' of Listeriosis refers to the annual diagnosis rate, or the number of new cases of Listeriosis diagnosed each year. Hence, these two statistics types can differ: a short-lived disease like flu can have high annual incidence but low prevalence, but a life-long disease like diabetes has a low annual incidence but high prevalence. For more information see about prevalence and incidence statistics.

------------------------------
------------------

Prevalence and incidence statistics for Listeriosis: (see also prevalence and incidence page for Listeriosis)
Incidence (annual) of Listeriosis: estimated 2,500 annually in USA (DBMD)
Incidence Rate: approx 1 in 108,800 or 0.00% or 2,500 people in USA [about data]
Incidence extrapolations for USA for Listeriosis: 2,500 per year, 208 per month, 48 per week, 6 per day, 0 per hour, 0 per minute, 0 per second.
Prevalance of Listeriosis: In the United States, an estimated 2,500 persons become seriously ill with listeriosis each year.1 ... Approximately 2500 cases annually in the United States.2
Incidence statistics about Listeriosis: The following statistics relate to the incidence of Listeriosis:

Oh my gosh!! I'm so glad you're feeling better! When I was told with my first not to eat lunch meat I thought what a crock. Then I read the newspaper articles the doc gave me about it. How scary!! I am totally freaked to eat any lunch meat or unpaturized cheese. I'm really careful to check foods at parties, because that's where I might end up eating some accidently.

Take care! And watch out! :-)

Hi everyone. I'm not still having symptoms, but I'm still so relieved I was tested (although I don't have the results back yet).

I just feel better knowing that even if I have it, it is usually treated successfully if caught early.

The moral of the story is lets all watch what we eat!!

I'm glad you at least have some peace of mind knowing that they will test you on Monday. I hope all is well.

As far as your question, "Does it get better with subsequent pregnancies???" I, personally, have found that your worries and concerns grow more and more in the subsequent pregnancies. I was pg in May '05... only knew it for 1 wk before I found out I had ectopic (was 6 wks pg), but in that wk the amount of info I read freaked me out. With this pg it's ten times worse! I don't remember worrying about listeria, BP, gestational diabetes, what side I slept on, etc. with my 1st pg 6 yrs ago and I coasted right through that one! With this one I've had every symptom in the book and I've read soooooo much info on each one that just made me feel worse when the symptom wouldn't subside. I think it's good to be informed... unfortunately, it does make you worry more and more each day. I'm rambling, and I'm no expert, but I wanted to give you my "personal" opinion... I feel you worry more and more with each pregnancy.

I would be concerned but not panicking. Since the only sypmtom you have is the diarrhea it could be just coincidence. Your body is going through lots of changes right now. Make sure you are drinking plenty of fluids and take it easy. I went through bouts of diarrhea followed by bouts of constipation. I never knew which was worse. :)

Inadvertantly eating the "wrong" thing like unpasturized cheese, unheated lunch meat or the like doesn't mean that you will get listeriosis, just that you could get listeriosis.

But definitely call back tomorrow if you still are having "issues" and make an appointment. Diarrhea for an extended length of time during PG isn't good even if it's not listeriosis. If the nurse still doesn't want you to come in, tell her that you are really worried and don't know how the stress is affecting your baby.

I would demand a listerosis test! Just call and ask them and say you need some blood work for it. I'm very aggressive w/ my doc. and I always get what I want. I wouldnt even ask or say anything more about your symptoms just ask when you can come in for the test~ They cant say no~ I ate some feta a while ago and got paranoid and the doc. said I'm fine when I felt I had a bit of a tummy bug. I made him test me and he did. Negitive....

I hate how ob/gyn doctors give you the brush off when it's something that could seriously endanger the health of your baby!

The symptoms I found online:
# Flu-like fever and muscle aches
# Upset stomach or diarrhea
# Stiff neck, headache, loss of balance, confusion or convulsions
# Flu-like symptoms in pregnant women

Don't know if this helps, but if you think it's severe, either call the doctor back and INSIST to be seen, or head to the ER. Whatever will give you peace of mind.

Good luck - please keep us posted.

Hi everyone. I am very worried because I inadvertently ate some imported goat cheese that I know for sure is NOT made from pasteurized milk. 4 days later I started having diaharria, which I have not had at any other time during my pregnancy. Today is now the 6th day I've had it. I know it's one of the symptoms of listeriosis, but I called my doctors office and they seem to be unconcerned. I am worried sick that I have listeriosis, which I've read can cause miscarriage. The nurse basically told me if it doesn't go away by tomorrow to call back. I feel that they should be taking this more seriously and getting me in right away for a test. Does anyone know more about this? I don't have any symptoms other than the diaherria so I don't know how concerned I should be.
