I did not get my shot till 28 weeks with my first two pregnancies. I did have to have blood drawn and wait while they checked the blook and made the shot, but it did not take longer than an hour.

Yep. If you're rh negative you'll need the shot(s) with every pregnancy.

I just miscarried my first on Feb. 15 and got the Rhogam shot to prevent rh sensitization. Am now waiting for HcG levels to return to normal to ttc again. It is routine to give the shot to any Rh- mother at 28 weeks, regardless of the date of her last shot, because any blood mixing is most likely to occur during the last trimester, and the shot's benefits last in the body for approx. 12 weeks - so the 28 week shot should cover you through delivery.

Also, the shot does not hurt very badly - mine only hurt while it was going in - the pain was over before I even had my pants zipped back up. The reason it hurts is because it is always refrigerated for preservation - the same reason a tetanus shot hurts - it's the coldness.

You will only get another one after delivery if your baby has positive blood.

Mine was quick and easy too (but one of the most painful needles I have gotten). My doctor ordered my prescription a few weeks in advance though so it was in the fridge at the clinic when I got there. I have to go for bloodwork in 10 days to make sure it's working but I don't know what some of you are talking about about a second shot during pregnancy. My doctor said I get it at 28 weeks (got it Thursday) and then again right after delivery.

They told me originally that the Rhogam would take "no more than an hour and a half" to be ready. It took 3. I think it can be refridgerated though if you have to leave? Maybe ask when you get there since you have a scheduling problem.

As for fasting, there's no fasting for the 1 hour glucose test, but for the 3 or the 6 hour you can't eat for 12 hours beforehand. You only have to have the longer test if you fail the first one though as far as I know.

I had to have the shot with my first baby. I just got it and left. No waiting. I don't have to have it this time though because both me and husband are A-

I just read this thread and started getting worred about the time it would take for my testing. I have a 3pm appointment after my test on the 16th that I CAN NOT miss or cancel. I scheduled my gloucose test and rhogam shot accordingly.
After reading here, I just got off the phone with my lab and they said that I have the glucose test at 12 noon, and the rhogam shot at 1p. I just have to make sure the ab tech knows they are to draw the blood for both shots BEFORE I drink the GluCola for the glucose test. Then the Rhogam shot can be made for me while I'm taking the other test. At 1p I have the shot, and I'm out right after.

I remember it being quick last time, but this time I have no room for timming error or I'd have to reschedule.
I don't see why it would take 3hrs...let alone 6 hrs for a test. I'm going to have both done in like 2½ hrs.
Wierd!

BTW: what is up with fasting? I just asked again and they said I can eat a good breakfast, just not sweets, and nothing after 11a for a 12noon test.

I'm not sure why they would keep you there 3 hours. I get my shot at my regular check up and leave. I'm O- so I get it at my next appt on march 1 and then after the birth of my child. My husband is positive bloodtype

Lol ladies this is what I posted about several weeks ago when my doctor told me my rhogam shot would take 6 hours. Yes they have to do the blood work then the shot is made. If you don't have to wait may I ask did you have a prescription for the shot? Or maybe its possible that the doctor got it made up before your appt. At my docs office they do the bloodwork and the shot the same day so you have to wait til the bloodwork processes then you have to wait again for them to make the shot because it is made specifically (sp) for you.

it's possible that they were testing your blood for anitibodies first before giving you the shot....is this your first pregnancy??

also, according to my midwife, blood has to be typed 2 times before they give you the rhogam shot so that they can be sure you actually need it...

2 possible explanations....other than that, i have no idea why it would take that long...it shouldn't.

If you have RH positive blood, there'd be no need for your doctor to tell you anything about it, because there's no risk. If you know they've typed your blood and you're either A+, B+, AB+ or O+, you don't need the shot.

I have no idea why they had to draw blood to give me the shot, I'm still confused...and even more annoyed to hear others just got the shot and left!

Okay now I feel like my doc is not doing his job. He's never said anything to me about this and hasen't even asked for my husbands blood type. Should I say something to him about this? I don't even know what blood type I am.. Okay, probably getting myself all worked up for nothing or should I be concerned??

Man, no one told me how awful getting the Rhogam shot was going to be. The shot itself was fine - it hurt a lot but no more than a tetanus shot and it doesn't hurt anymore or anything. But it took 3 HOURS!!! They had to draw blood and send it off somewhere where they specially made the shot? I still don't really understand what took so long. I was told to hold out an hour for the glucose test, but told nothing about the Rhogam taking forever. We were there for 3 hours, and what with drinking that crazy juice then not eating, I wasn't even human by the end of it!

Make sure if you have to get the shot that you ask how long it will take, and BRING FOOD!!!
