Prenatal Vitamins during the entire pregnancy?

I want to know if it is necessary to take prenatals through out the entire pregnancy. Aside from the general side effects, its not a big deal but I'm not good at remembering all the time.

A friend of mine only took them through the first trimester for both pregnancies & her children are fine. Just curious how much it actually matters since our bodies don't breakdown/absorb most of the pill anyway.
