Wow, I'm so glad it worked out! I know you were really nervous about it, and I can certainly understand what a tough decision it was for you. It sounds like you made the right choice, though. Like I said earlier, I had similar qualms about getting Izzy's tubes placed, and that is a very minor procedure. You just worry, though, any time something requires anasthesia and invasive measures. So I'm glad you were pleased with everything and that it all went smoothly. Sounds like it was really a good decision!

My oldest son Jackson, who is about to turn 4, suffered from sleep apnea. He snored at so bad during the night, and then in the next second it would be like he wasn't breathing at all and we would wait to see if he was going to start breathing again. When he was 2 he caught a cold and when we took him to the doctor, she looked at his throat and his tonsils were so swollen, she didn't even know how he was breathing! So she sent us to the ENT where they said he for sure needed his tonsils and adnoids removed, but they also discovered that he couldn't hear very well either, pratically at all, so they also decided to put tubes in his ears as well. We went in for outpatient surgery, which went by perfectly. When we got the little man home, he took a nap and we never heard a peep out of him again when he was sleeping. But as for the hyperactivity, that never stopped after the surgery!ha! His speech was a little delayed, but now he talks perfectly well, for his age. It was truly a life saver.

Well it was considered outpatient, because it was only 23 hours (and ended up being about 28-29 hours). We did stay overnight though.

It went well!! The nursing staff and doctors were awesome. His ENT said that his tonsils were huge and adenoids even larger. His uvula is also longer than normal, but nothing can really be done about that. They ran the scope into his larynx and everything looked fine.

When he woke up a bit more from the anesthesia he cried for probably a half hour on and off (mostly on). Once we got some medicine in him he fell asleep for a little while, and so did I. About 5:30 that evening he started drinking some for me and ate a whole bunch of soft food. We left about 11:15am on Friday.

Days are getting better. He is still pretty bad in the morning when he wakes up because he hasn't had his tylenol/codeine but once he gets it in him he is my normal kid again. He is super drool-y and ruining a lot of shirts! He seems to have completely forgone naps for the moment, but he isn't falling asleep in the early evening if we are in the car. He is actually going to bed at a decent hour and getting 12-13 hours of sleep overnight.

I hope its not a fluke, but it seems life is getting better. Just wanted to update you on how he did :)

They probably would listen to you, I'd think, especially if you really like your ENT. You could have the ENT talk to the hospital and figure out how to code it for the insurance company so that they'd be more likely to cover it. Good luck and let us know how it goes! I understand your preference completely - I'm the same way. I'd rather have him watched more closely, even if it winds up being unnecessary.

We just saw the ENT today, who said that Izzy probably just outgrew whatever the problem was; maybe it was just immaturity in muscle tone or whatever. The ENT says Izzy looks fine, and his only recommendation is that we stop using the monitor! LOL! So I guess I can put my tape recorder away now.

Awwww, poor baby! I'm sure it will go smoothly, because as you said, it's pretty routine. But I know from Izzy getting tubes in his ears that it's really nerve-wracking as a parent to have your baby go into surgery, no matter how minor it is. Just stay calm and bring someone with you for support, since you'll probably be suffering more than he will! Let us know how it goes, okay?

By the way, Izzy seems to have stopped snoring most of the time, and he hasn't had any apneas that I have heard...all that stopped as soon as I took him to the ped! As soon as I was waiting for the right moment to tape his sleep sounds, he stopped completely. Go figure. I still plan to consult the ENT about it.

Oh he snores like a freight train lol and its every night and every time he sleeps

Anyway, an update for everyone. Rylan was diagnosed with mild to moderate sleep apnea. He had a total of 19 apneas lasting 10-12 sec each, and only 2% of his total sleep was REM sleep. He is scheduled for surgery on the 25th to remove his tonsils and adenoids. They will also be running a scope down his voice box to make sure there aren't any underlying causes for the snoring since he has been doing it for so long. Wish us luck. I know its very routine, and I REALLY hope that this will help him in the sleep department, but I am nervous about the anesthesia!

Izzy snores, too. Not all the time, but every night we hear it at some point. I guess I'll see what our ENT says next month (if I make it there before giving birth!). Do your guys snore constantly, or just sometimes? And is it always really loud, or sometimes light?

Well all I know is that babies should absolutely not be snoring. I guess all of his other symptoms point to apnea :( That's why they want the sleep study so they can monitor everything.

We are set for October, so at least I have a little while!

Hi - it's so weird you should ask this, because I just took Izzy to the ped. about his snoring and weird night breathing! She doesn't think he has sleep apnea but told me that next time we go to the ENT I should bring in a tape recording of his night breathing, esp when it gets all funny. Maybe you could ask if they could start with that? Then maybe they could diagnose without admitting him to the hospital overnight.

Let us know how it goes - I'm sorry I don't have any better suggestions. I'd just be sure to bring his familiar objects, like his pillow or blankets from home and a stuffed animal and something that smells like you maybe.

Well, the ENT thinks Rylan may have sleep apnea. He has extremely large tonsils (4 on a scale of 1-4), more than likely a large adenoid, breathes through his mouth all the time, snores (which apparently is a no no with toddlers), his extreme hyperactivity is a result of no quality sleep...YAY

So, he has to go in for a sleep study in October at the children's hospital. Of course they will measure his vitals and keep an eye on his levels..and if need be, they will perform an adenoidectomy and a tonsillectomy if apnea is the problem.

Has anyone else had to go through this? I'm not so worried about possible surgery...I have very large tonsils and constantly have problems with them- so the younger the better for him, but I don't know what to expect from the sleep study. I don't even think he will fall asleep in the hospital!!
