I have an appointment scheduled for this Mon. Turns out my baby has uneven skinfolds. Which could be hip dysplasia.

I did swaddle him tight, now I feel bad if that is what he has. He is 9 weeks now.

I only swaddled him off and on the first week he was home and haven't since. He likes to move his arms and legs around alot so I just put a blanket over him and let him do his baby arobics..lol

I never swdeled her tight just rapped a blanket around her in the nights at first as it was rather cold here but am tempting to try so she might sleep longer at night.

Dont want to do it during the day becaese of devalopment, i had some pants to push my hips apparnt, as they were growing rong, my mum was just lurning about lurning disorders and that is what she tinks made my dyslixer (sp) worse, as i had that for a copel of months where i would of lurnd to roll over.

I believe I swaddled the first week or two. He just moves too much and ends up kicking the blanket off anyway.

Lauryn only will tolerate being swaddled at night to go to sleep. It has really helped us in getting her to stay asleep. She used to wake herself up with flailing arms and have a hard time going back to sleep. Now, she is much calmer and sleeps a little longer. But, she still won't tolerate it during the day, so we get very little breaks b/c she only takes 15-20 min cat naps.

Izzy has *never* tolerated having his arms swaddled, so I can only swaddle him up to his armpits. He's been that way since birth! Even as a newborn preemie with a chronically low temp, he needed his arms free to move, even if it meant having ice cubes for fingers! I guess that's how he got his cord tied into a knot in the first place. Having felt his quirky little movements in the womb, this phenomenon shouldn't surprise me.

I try and swaddle Kayleigh but she hates it. She loves to kick her feet around and have her arms free.

Ben won't sleep in his crib unless he's swaddled and it's getting to be a pretty big problem now that it's getting hotter. I'm going to keep trying to ween him away from it since I'm terrified of him getting overheated. He always wriggles his arms free, it's just his legs that he likes to have all tucked in. I got him to sleep without his swaddling a few times but whenever I put him in his crib he'd just throw his arms and legs out and start crying like crazy. This must stop.

Can swaddling cause hip dysplasia?

Extreme tightness in swaddling can contribute to orthopedic problems such as hip dysplasia. This can be a concern when using the traditional method of swaddling with receiving blankets or other wrappings.

I stopped swaddling him now that I can get him down to sleep ok. He hated having his hands tied down too. I too have heard something about their hips, but I don't remember what it was. I know you're not supposed to do it too tight.

My little one is a month old and still needs to be swaddled to sleep well on her back. But she has figured out how to undo herself when she doesn't want to be swaddled.

I have stopped swaddling and didn't even realize it. She likes to be snuggled more now and so i will have to start doing it again and see if that helps, thanks girls!

I still swaddle to a certain extent
I find it makes the transistion from my arms after a feed to the bed easier and they are nice and warm so don't miss the body heat so they don't disturb to much when put down to sleep

don't know about the hip thingy sorry :-)

Yeah, he actually struggles a bit but as the BW explains it, they don't actually have control over their arms and legs at this point so they are more of a distraction if the baby is overtired/overstimulated. It's like he struggles one minute and seems extremely comfortable the next... I guess I'll keep it up for a few days and see if it actually helps.

I made the tops using iron-on paper -- they sell it in craft stores. You can create an image on your computer and print it, then iron on a cotton shirt. It's great, but doesn't last well in the wash!

By the way, I love the name Sage for a girl!

wow.. never heard that...

However - Sage has always hated to be swaddled. I swaddle her and she wiggles out.

She just loves to sprawl. My mom says that is how I was.

That could explain my wide hips? *dies of laughter*

Hey, ladies
My babe is now 6+ weeks old; I was pretty free with his routines of eating and sleeping during the first 4 weeks, but have been trying to get him into a routine.

So here's my question: Since he was held so much in the first few weeks, I noticed that Levi now has a hard time staying asleep when I lay him down. I read in the Baby Whisperer that she swaddles infants until they are 3-4 months old. So I started swaddling him, and he stays asleep longer. The only thing is that I've heard it's not good for their hips after a certain point. Anybody else heard this?

Have you guys swaddled your baby at all? Do you still? There are all kinds of opinions on how to help a baby sleep, so I'm sure I won't get a difinitive answer, but I'm curious to know what works for all of you.
