Here's some info I found on the web.

Linea Nigra:

What is this?
Linea nigra is the dark line that runs from your navel to your pubic bone. This is a line that may have always been there, but you may have never noticed it before because it was a light color. During pregnancy this line darkens and is possibly caused by the imbalance in hormones. It usually appears around the fourth or fifth month of pregnancy.

What can I do?
There is nothing you can do to prevent this from happening, but after your pregnancy this line will fade.

What about this dark line running down my belly?
It's called the linea nigra. Before your pregnancy, you had an unnoticeable line (called the linea alba) the same color as your skin and in the same place: running from about the top of your belly button to the top of your pubic bone. The same increased production of melanin that causes facial skin splotches is responsible for darkening this line. It will probably fade back to its pre-pregnant state several months after you have your baby.

There is absolutely no info saying it has anything to do with diastisis reci (the separation of your abdominal muscles).
Just thought I would add that, I don't want anyone to be worried about diastisis recti when they don't have to be. If you have any doubts just call your doctor and ask him.

if it is the linea albea then it has a little bit to do with the muscles...thats what connects the muscles, its a tendon.

i still have mine 5 weeks later.

i just wish my stretch marks would disappear :)

KARA22 - I didn't realize that either!! That was a great day! A perfect day to have a baby if I must say so myself!!

PS - That line is not from the separation of the muscles it's deffinately just a hormon thing with the pigment in your skin. When your muscles separate they don't leave a visable line. You have to lay on your back and lift your head off the ground, feel your lower stomach and if it is soft instead of being hard from the muscle then your muscle has separated.

I don't think it has to do with abdominal seperation. I think it is just discoloration that some women get-- a change in pigment. I have no abdominal seperation (less than a finger's worth) so I know it can't be related to that.

It will slowly fade and go. Well for most it does. It went after 2 of my pregnancies, and has faded quite a bit already this time round!

Mine was still faintly visible a year after I had my first son, but I do believe it should go away completely. It just takes time.

It has nothing to do with separation of the abdominal muscles. Its caused by pregnancy hormones that increase melanin production. The line is always there, but its normally called the linea alba (white line).

I was wondering about it too, and now Crystalmay scared me. I thought it was only about skin, not about muscles. I hope it goes away, because when you look at it from further away it looks like I'm hairy.

I had a really dark line when I was pregnant with the twins and after I delivered it took forever to go away--I am going to say 9 months. This time, the line is not as dark so hopefully it will go away sooner.

It SHOULD fade away, but it can take some time. That line is actually caused by the separation of your abdominal muscles. That can take a while to go back to normal. Exercise can help. I'm not sure what kinds, so maybe someone else has advice on that. Or you could do a search and find some I'll bet. Good Luck!

My baby is 2 weeks and 4 days and mine isn't gone yet either. I would expect it to go away eventually. But, I don't know when because I never had it with my previous pregnancies. It's one of the things that actually make me smile when I look at myself, it's like my reminder that 2 1/2 weeks ago Tru was in my belly.

Anyone else get a line down the middle of their stomach? Just wondering if its going to go away. My baby is 2 weeks old and its still there, hasn't faded at all. :(
