Katie's naps are still totally hit or miss. She's more likely to take a nap on the days she's been to preschool in the morning (but not always). I even dragged my sick butt out with all three kids to the park today to have her run around for an hour in hopes that she would wear herself out enough to take a nap. Hallelujah, it worked this time. I guess this needs to become our Tues./Thurs. routine.
Last week she missed being put down for a nap one day because her little friend from San Diego was visiting and that night was a nightmare! I have never seen her throw a tantrum like that before. It was scary. So at least I know that putting her in her room for a while every afternoon is doing SOMEthing productive in her brain, even if she doesn't actually sleep during that time. I don't want to see Monster Katie like that again.
Now I just have to work on my anger control when she's up there in her room messing around for that 1.5 hours. For some reason, it angers me to no end when she's bumping and thumping around upstairs when she should be napping. Especially since it's likely I'm dealing with one or two crying babies downstairs and it's not too easy to enforce any "rules" when she's that far away from me. She's lucky we're not a spanking family because it is soooo tempting! Ugh, I need some sleep...

I just had my second child, and my first just started not having his nap too! I have been shamelessly bribing him with videos (we usually don't do tv) that he can watch if he's 'quiet' during naptime. this has totally been working. i usually do a short berenstain bear video on youtube or something i got from the library. he seems to be into it. and he's napping. go figure. i am desparate for the nap as my nights are not smooth sailing with my 1 month old yet.

Making the decision to have a child - it's momentous. It is to decide forver to have your heart go walking around outside your body.

I think it's a victory that you can actually have them stay in their room for 1.5 hours, even if they are not sleeping. Count your blessings. Matthew is up at 7 and is moving until 7 at night when he goes to bed. Naps come sporadically (maybe once a month if that). I've tried shutting all the lights off in the house, closing curtains and blinds and only putting movies in when it's quiet time. Doesn't matter. At most I get 20 minutes of stillness. He plays well by himself for the most part and it's not all craziness, but he just wouldn't tolerate being made to be in one place for an extended period of time.

PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT WORKS!!!! Chandler has started fighting naps too and it scares me to death knowing there will be 2 babies to care for in under 2 months. I do enforce that he has to be in his room for 1.5 hours...but he's not always quiet....At this stage in my pregnancy, I live for those naps on weekends and he doesn't always cooperate!! :)

That's a good idea about letting her keep the lights on, but if she gets out of bed then turning them off. Now the trick is to enforce it. I've been telling her that resting is fine, but she needs to not mess around in her room during that time (I was also doing 1.5 hrs). But with her upstairs and me downstairs, with a baby...or two...in my arms, well, it's not easy to keep going up and down the stairs everytime I hear a bump. So I've been resorting to yelling up there or threatening "No snacks (or juice or TV or...whatever...) the rest of the day if you don't stop messing around!" That only seems to work half the time. She has slept the last two days - who knows why? I told her that I didn't want to feet to touch the ground once she got in bed and other than a one-time reminder it seemed to work. She's exhausting!

We also do quiet time. Owen goes into his room after lunch...I do the same routine as bedtime (close the blinds, turn on his fan) and he has be tucked into bed. He's allowed to chose one friend and one book to be in bed with him. He is allowed to keep the lights on (the only difference from bedtime). He must stay in his room a minimum of 1.5 hours and he must be quiet (he can talk but no shouting etc).

He knows not to get out of bed, or I will come and turn off the light. He doesn't always sleep but more often than not, he will if he's tired enough. The days he doesn't sleep generally he's in an agreeable mood the rest of the day, so I'm guessing he just doesn't need the sleep on those days.

Good luck - I know how much I need those precious minutes during the day ...I can only imagine it with 2 babies!

These are Kai's two options -

Go to bed and sleep
Or lay on his McQueen couch and watch a DVD. There is no playing, running & sitting up. I am mean I know.

We have a QUIET time everyday after lunch. This is when Jett has his big arvo nap so Kai must rest too. Occasionally Kai will nap but more often than not he wont either, which is fine by me but he must REST! No option.

As soon as Jett is awake. Toys can come out and the day goes on as normal.
If Jett sleeps for hours, Kai can sit quietly and draw or read while Jett is snoozing.

This has been our routine for months and he knows it well now ... lol

We are in the same boat. Ever since we took away his pacifier (about 3 months ago) Cody will only take a nap occasionally during the day. Like Magdicka said, when Cody goes several days without a nap, he will usually take one. I need that peace and quiet time, too!! If I lay down with him, sometimes he will fall asleep, but sometimes I need to be doing other things and not laying down with him for an hour until he falls asleep (although some days it is nice when I want a nap too!). Cody will just start playing with his toys, so that still gives me a break, because he will stay in his room and play somewhat quietly.

Katie wakes up at 6am, always has, no matter what we try to do to get her to sleep in later. I've adapted to that, I'm fine with it. She goes to bed at 7pm because of it. Lately she's been resisting napping more and more. The girl never gets tired and passes out, she winds up and up and up and drives the entire household crazy...I NEED her to nap! Do any of you have any suggestions for getting her to fall asleep mid-day...she's fighting me every step of the way. I don't think she's napped in 5 days now and she's becoming very hard to live with past 3pm!
