THis is the basic Mai Tai I made. My friend loves to make them and you can do the straps at an angle of you can do them straight. This is a good one that is very basic.

I will have to look for a side one. My boy will tolerate the Mai tai but cranes around so he can look at things.

I totally understand the 85 projects at once thing...I have about 15...but I'm over them and onto something new!! I have to take a day to just finish all my half done or cut out projects!! I keep telling myself, when school is over, then I can sew all I want!

I'll check out babyhawk and ellaroo, too. I only bought my sewing machine last year... since then I've made a couple of travel pillowcases (for my far away traveling sisters), a quilt for little M, and a second quilt top that I swear will be a comleted quilt by Sunday. When that's done, I'll allow myself to start working on some kind of ABC... I'll let you know how it goes! Minkee mei tai sounds very cool indeed.

Katy - I'll also write back to you soon via email.

Yeah, I think we're about the only ones who sew on here!!!

I made my podegi last night...love it!! Ry's on my back right now! Now I'm totally going to look for fabric for a mei tai. I'm going to Cali next week and they have a HUGE fabric store that my mom and I going to trek to in SF so I'm going to find something there.

Also, with the straps, you can pad them with a piece of fleece and it works great. I was totally skeptical that it would be enough padding, but it's AWESOME!

Cheesy: As for slings, I second the pouch sling. I love my hotsling, and I made a fleece one, though it's WAY too hot right now. I do recommend a stretchy one, as my hotsling isn't and it's not super comfy for very long periods of time. If you can sew, make one, because then you can make it fit perfectly. My hotsling is a tad too big, but the smaller size was too snug, so I can't wear her on my back, and she isn't totally secure (without my hand) in the hip carry. Again, baby wearer has so much info, it's amazing. I'm sure you can find what you need on there!!!

Thanks! I somehow thought it might be you two who had answers for me. I'm hoping to make one that DH and I can wear on our fronts and backs.

Cheesy - I would definitely recommend a pocket sling if you're looking for something to wear on your hip. I bought mine (b/c I'm a chicken and sort of new to sewing), but I think Katy made one. I have 2 that I really like and one that's not so good. The ones I like (because M likes them) are either deep (new native) or stretchy (peanut shell). The less great one is neither deep nor stretchy, and while it's fine for cradle or forward facing, it's not really good for hip carry.

Katy - I've been all over thebabywearer.com! It's so huge that I feel a bit overwhelmed, but I'll look for you. I'm siddabelle on there, too, but I'm not sure I've ever posted. Thanks for the pattern website - I'll check that out. There were a few in the DIY section, and I had no idea which I should start with. I was also looking at the no-sew version, but the fleece probably isn't the best for summer!

I also used the baby wearer and made a mai tie. I like it but I really want to find a sling I can use on my hip. Caleb likes to face forward and the mai tie doesn't really work for that. He hates the moby because it has too much fabric.

I recommend making wide straps. It makes it much more comfy.

Have you been to www.thebabywearer.com?? There is a DIY forum and tons of help in there. I just made a podegi (similar to a mei tai) and will probably make a mei tai when I find the perfect fabric!

There is a pattern online at http://tinyurl.com/nefvg. I used that one once, but I made some mods and it was no good. If you make it to the specifications, it should be fine!

But def. check out the baby wearer. They have awesome support and lots of moms who DIY!

(I'm on there too...katymama there too. You'll see me in the DIY)
