How much is the Nutramigen vs. Alimentum? Right now Sydney is on Alimentum and wow is that costing us...$25 for 1lb. can which lasts a week and then we also buy the premade ones for daytime.
I'm going to ask my doctor today when I go if Good Start is a good idea for her.

Sean was very gassy and had diarrhea all the time. I switched from Similac to Carnation Good Start and problem solved. Within twenty-four hours his bowel movements became normal and no more gas. Good Start breaks down the proteins so they are easily digested. And, it's the same price as the other regular milk-based formulas. I know Nutragimen and Ailementum are very pricey. Alex was Ailementum until he was 15-months old. He had reflux and food allergies.
For all of you dealing with reflux, I know it can be really difficult. Alex cried and puked a lot, but it finally subsided around 4 months. Alex slept in his car seat until 5 months old. We could not lay him flat. I hated putting him in the car seat every night, but it worked. Other than the formula change we did not use any meds. The meds didn't seem to work on Alex. And, for those of you using Reglan I believe there are some warnings about using it on infants. I remember when Alex had reflux they wanted to put him on Reglan and I did some research on it and decided against it.
Good luck ladies!

FRANY8696,
I have to say WHAT A DIFFERENCE! Easton has been on Nutramagin since Wenesday morning and I noticed a difference right away! It doesn't taste that bad....he drinks it and more than usual. Thursday morning I went to the health food store in search of Gripe Water but the owner turned me on to COCYNTAL made by BOIRON. It's a homeopathic medicine specific for gas pain and irritability. WOW!!! THIS STUFF WORKS. I gave him his first does in the car and he immediatly started passing gas. By the time we were home his belly was soft and he was sound asleep. You can give a does as needed. 30 doeses come in a box and it was $9.45. I haven't given him a does since yesterday afternoon and he slept so wonderful last night. No crying out in pain! He hardley has any gas! Let's hope this in combination with Nutramagin works. I haven't given him the Zantac in two day either. Let me know how you make out! www.boiron.com

I got to sleep 7 hours las night!!! Ashtyn only woke up for feedings then back to sleep! NO TUMMY PAIN! Same goes fot today....she's been awake all day and no pain or crying! These are the same meds my son was on 6 years ago too and they worked for him. For those who asked: (Zantac) - works by decreasing the amount of acid the stomach produces. It neutralizes the acid so that it doesn't "burn" as much; well tolerated by most babies, few side effects but tastes AWFUL!
Reglan - increases the rate at which the stomach and intestines move during digestion. It also increases the rate at which the stomach empties into the intestines and increases the strength of the lower esophageal sphincter (the muscle between the stomach and esophagus...this is the muscle that allows acid to move back up into the esophagus when it is weak). It also tastes bad, but not quite as bad as zantac.
I've been on these medications pretty much as long as I can remember. I have had stomach problems since birth. My 6 year old only had to take them his first year, and now my newborn daughter is having the same trouble. At least we knew where to start...we didn't have to run so many tests this time around.

Wyatt has been on Nutramigen for about a week and it has helped him go from screaming constantly to only having smaller screaming fits 4-5x/day. We are pretty sure the fits are reflux but I have to wait for our dr appt to know for sure. He will vomit small amounts right after a feed and then large mucousy amounts about 1/2 hr to an hour after. Sometimes he even has spit up during a feeding and then it takes forever to get him to eat. he often will have bad reflux while trying to push out a poop which is horrible. The only way he can sleep without constantly waking is on his stomach on my chest elevated about 45 degrees. I never thought my child would be 'colicky' but my mil says that is how DH was... so i guess it could be genetic. So far this is what we have tried: keeping him upright for 1/2 hour after feed (elevated crib and change table, avoiding tight clothing and too tight diapers, small frequent feedings, avoiding lifting his legs really high while diaper changing, giving him a pacifier (helps keep things going in the opposite direction), switching to nutramigen and dr. brown's bottles and not thumping hard on his back to burp but placing his arms on shoulder and belly on chest and softly rubbing and tapping his back. So far these things help sometimes but not all the time. However, at least I feel like I have a couple things to do to try to help him. I will let you know how the dr's goes, I do not want to medicate either but he just seems to be in such pain sometimes it breaks my heart. I just want him to be comfortable. Good Luck and let me know how everything goes for the rest of you ladies.

Lactation specialist at my hospital recomended Gripe Water from health food store. It's kind of pricey, about $11 per bottle, but I tried that and it seems to work when Tommy gets fussy during feeding and don't want to latch on properly and keeps crying. It's all natural so there are no side affects. Also there are pills that disolve under baby's tongue, they are called Hylands Colic tablets or someting like that. But I prefere the Gripe Water.

My lil man is really gassy as well - here are some suggestions that I do that may help you:
Lay them over your lap so he is on his tummy and rub his back - this seems to settle Kai.
give them a massage - best to do it just before bath time - massage ALL over body. Legs, back, tummy ect.
try giving them a warm bath or even pop them in the shower with you if he gets really bad. Kai has a shower or bath every night and thats what settles him just before he goes to bed.
gripe water? Have you tried that? It usually settles them pretty well.
Anyways, just a few suggestions. Hope that helps you a bit. GL

My doctor told me to add rice ceral as well but it keeps clogging the nipple. He gets so frustated. I guess I have to get faster flowing nipples. What is Reglan? They put Easton on Zantac too but I was going to try to wait it out a bit to see if he gets better. I hate to medicate him so early in life. Sounds like we're in the same boat! I guess your not sleeping much either huh? Let me know if it works for you. Amber

I just got home from Easton's doctors appoinment because he too is very gassy! He also has a mild case of acid reflux. I've put him on Enfamil Nutramagin formula because the protiens are alredy broken down so it's easier to digest. It breaks my heart to hear him scream in pain. He also said to keep an eye out because this is when Colic sets in! Ah......... NO!!!!

I am giving the WalMart brand of gas drops. Thanks Ill have to try the burping every 5 min. I was mainly concerned about the spitting up because its curdled, I wasnt sure if that was normal. I know he eats too fast cause it seems like my milk comes out too fast for him and hes always gulping and you can hear him swallowin air. But I dont think theres any way I can stop that.

I would try burping every 5 minutes while he's feeding, and making sure he's not eating too fast. Spitting up is normal, try to keep him upright for a while after feeding.
If you feel he's not getting any relief or if you are worried he's sick, bring him to see his doctor.

Hey girls. I also posted this in baby and toddler care and breastfeeding support. Hoping someone here can help me. My 1 month old son has been extremely fussy. I been breastfeeding and hes been very gassy. I give him gas drops but they don't seem to work. Also (not all day but enough to bother me) the past couple days hes been spitting up curdled looking milk. Sometimes a tiny and like earlier today looked like a whole feeding. My ques is could the curdled milk hes spitting up be from gas or overeating maybe? or does it sound like he might have a bug. My poor little guy seems like hes hurting all the time. Is it maybe something I am eating thats upsetting him? Im staying clear of th main things they say to like beans , broccoli and such. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.
