I must say the thread started out seeking suggestions so let me give my 2 cents. I have put upon myself the control that if I can cook at home that I will instead of eating out. I had an experience several months ago eating fastfood like wendy's, mcdo,BK etc...and I had swelling so bad to that point that it would hurt me when i walk..so Ive learned my lesson to avoid it as much as I can. I see no one passing judgment to anyone so let's keep the thread healthy and make it a goal to help each other while we go thru pregnancy.

ELA0427,
I do read your post about the GF, I didnt believe the wonders it make but last night I went to my MIL's house and she cooked chicken breast with GF grill and I felt in love with it. I was thinking of buying one but you know what, you gave out an invitation and I wanna take this chance to say I might as well have it if youre giving it away. My email add is annamae009@yahoo.com....I'll wait on what you have to say.

Lesly... since you will tell me with honesty... Did I said something wrong, or I am sensing my opinion is not welcome here?

I guess next time I will stay away... I guess that 15 years of food service are not expertise...

A pina colada just isnt the same without the rum.. it's like non-alcoholic wine.. just not the same. As for the cheeseburger, even making it with extra lean ground beef(which is pretty much all I buy) I still want the bun and the cheese and the mayo and the onion rings :P And hold all the vegetables.

I think fast food three times a week is a habit. It's also a hard one to break, you're bombarded by fast food places everywhere you go, and they are convenient, that's the whole point of them, but they're not nutritious and have no real value as a meal.. there isn't really an arguement there.. they're definitely more bad than good.

Everything can be a habit Danielle... I work with many people who survive on fast food (and this means 24/7)...

I am a chef profesionally, and believe it or not... nowdays every fast food offers healthy choices...

I will not condem your choice for fast food, because, sometimes, even self concious people like me, depend on them.

I also know many people who survive on TV dinners and frozen foods, thinking this is healthier than fast food, when the truth is that those little convenient boxes on the frozen section of the supermarket are even worst... Don't pay too much attention to negativity over fast food, after all your body need food and like I said, I rather give into it, than starve...

There you go girl... That is a smart choice...

I crave Fast Food too, and after all, I work outside the home, and like it or not, I rather get the fast food before going on an empty stomach...LOL

The baby let me know when is time, and if I don't have a choice... Why not go for it...

Sorry to bump, but this is a question for ANDROMEDARL... Why you say that you had craved Piña Coladas and Cheese burgers and didn't go for them?

The basics for a Piña Colada is Cream of Coconut, pineapple Juice and Ice (this is a frappe)... The only Ingredient you have to avoid is the rum, but Piña Coladas are very healthy, specially if you choose to add fresh pinapple chunks in your blender...

Also, cheeseburgers?... buy lean meat and make your own hamburger patties with lean meat, and instead of regular bread, use wheat buns...

I tell you this because I am very careful about my food intake, and even when I let myself go once every other month, I try to replace Fast Food items at home, using fresh ingredients.

My whole thing is that you post on a board that endorses "Healthy babies start with healthy moms" and you're looking for support for a fast food habit? I can't support someone that chooses to eat fast food several times a week. I disagree with it and I think that when you do it when you have kids, you teach them bad eating habits. I think the time to change it is now, when your baby is developing and needs your nutrition. I hate the excuse "You're pregnant, eat whatever you want" I don't think that's sound advice. I understand craving things, but there comes a point where it's ridiculous.

I'm craving a pina colada and have been for 4 months.. have I gone out and had it? Hell no. I'd also love to make cheeseburgers everyday and eat them with onion rings, but I don't (Actually havent had one in ages, and the last time was homemade, not greasy fast food)

Keeping the fridge full with fresh cut fruits and veggies, sliced cheese and crackers in the cupboards is a better option to needing to eat in a rush (good snacks to tide you over while making dinner) and eating at your moms house is a great idea. I do that at least once a week as well, sometimes more if she's making something I'm craving. I also have the same problem where there is only two of us here, myself and my 6 year old, so eating at my moms isnt a big issue at all. It also cuts my grocery bill down (which isnt why I do it anyway)

The first few weeks of no fast food are the hardest, but once youg et past the addiction, it gets easier, you just need to be dedicated to it.

Fast food is very bad for you - in this “got to go” “got to have it now” world they aren't looking at nutrition...if you can find a salad with light dressing or a fat free carb free wrap your lucky...even though I know it tastes soooooo good!

Danielle,
I understand you completely. I do cook about 4 nights a week... But, generally, I do not even want to eat what I cook. All I want is cookies and muffins and donuts (sweet carbs) - and sometimes fruits/salads. So, I cook for my hubby and then eat a muffin w/ a side salad or vegi.

I know what you mean about people pointing fingers. I have just gained 16 pounds at 33 weeks... When I was eating 3 meals a day with vegis, carbs, fats and proteins, etc. I hardly gained anything at all. Finally, I started to gain some weight when I started eating appealing, calorie-rich food.

If you are looking for smart "fast foods", Panera Bread has great sandwiches, soups, salads, and cakes! Probably a lot less sodium and fat than McD's. But, hey, eat what you can... and if McD's and BK is all you are craving, eat it and try to make an effort to also eat a piece of fruit or some vegis.

Thank you Spunky. I just needed for someone to understand. I wasn't trying to sound harsh or angry, but most of us don't realize that we may have things in common (we're pregnant), but We Are Different as day & night.

Totally know how you feel... And you right, no one has any right to judge you or what your doing. You and your Dr. know what's right for you not everyone else. As for everyone in your office...Things like this are my pet peeve, everyone is so busy telling you how to live your life, or how to raise your child sometimes you just have to say "well, my Dr. says I'm okay so I'll just go by what he (she) says" Usually assertiveness like this gets them to back off without you having to sound rude or defensive. Anyway your not alone, and your right people shouldn't point fingers, but they should realize everyone IS different!

You sound as if your getting a little defensive. I think it's a great idea to eat at your mom's. Me and my son do that quite often as well. Maybe I'm just not sure what your asking for? Are you looking for healthy choices at fast food restaurants?

I have a crockpot, I use a crockpot, we eat from a crockpot. I have a george forman, I use a george forman, we eat from a george forman. I don't see a point to cook a big meal when i'm the only one eating? My daughter & I eat every small portions, so going to mom's house only make one more mouth to feed. Also, if I have my own supply of food there, why not?

It'd be different if I gained too much weight during pregnancy, but I haven't, the normal 24 lbs for 32 weeks.

Have you tried cooking in a crockpot? They have really good meals you can just throw into the pot and turn it on and go. Sometimes it's the only way I have time to cook.

I appreciate your comments, I really do, but maybe I need to be a little more clear. I'm not a cooker meaning I can, I will, but don't always have the time too. We do not eat every meal out; we just happened to 3 days in an row this week. We eat at my moms house on a regular because it's in our schedule. We visit them from 6p-8p (dinner hours) everyday. Should I pack a snack lunch? Yes I know fast food cost $ and its better & cheaper to cook at home.
I guess most of us would rather rip others new a**whole with judgments.

I havent stepped inside a McDonalds in about ten years... I loathe fast food.... Anyways, I cook a couple times a week. One easy dinner I make is a veggie chili, I add black beans, kidney beans, and white beans, along with a large can of tomato sauce, I usually add peppers, onions, chili powder and garlic.... Its so easy to make and its very healthy... All that protein and it warms me up.... A nice slice of French bread and thats dinner!!!!

Banquet also makes pre made crock pot dinners in a bag. They are great. Open em up, dump em in, add water, and let it go. They are like $6 and well worth it.

Fast food isnt the only sodium culprit.. any of the "convenience" foods are not great for you, including canend soups and prepared hams(they are filled with nitrates and sulphites)

It's a choice you have tomake to cook at home. It's cheaper and better for your body. It's great un to be lazy but it's not good for your health(Ever seen Supersize Me?)

The GF is a good idea, I have a 2 person version I can send to anyone that wants it, small but good for a couple of chicken breasts. We never use it since we have a BBQ outside and I live in CA...usually sunny and warm enough to grill outside. You can post your email and I will write to get your address.

I bought a crockpot. That has been wonderful. In the morning all you do is throw in all the ingredients and 6-8 hours it's done. The normal prep time is like 10 minutes. I love to cook, but my husband works 3pm-11pm and it's hard to figure out a lot of different things to fix him. You might want to think about a crock pot.

I have that problem too. I try to get things that are easy to prepare even microwavable. I love to cook but when I married my husband 3 years ago, he and his son are fast food junkies. And I admit they pulled me over on their side. But I have been trying to cut out the junk food and fast food now that I am pregnant because I have seen what it did to my 9 year old stepson. When you ask him what he wants for dinner instead of him saying hot dogs or spaghetti , it's McDonalds, Wendys, Pizza Hut. And I do not want my daughter being that way, I want her to be healthy not a fast food junkie.

If you are feeling OK and the butt is not getting TOO huge enjoy it. This is not a good habit for feeding little kids. I love the crockpot! Yesterday morning I put in a chuck roast, sliced 1/2 an onion and put it on top, sprinkled salt/pepper and some dashes of Worchesteire (spelling??) sauce. I added a little beef broth (1/2 way up the side of the meat and cooked on low for 10 hours. when I came home the smell was amzing. We had beef with buttered egg noodles and it only took 5 min to prepare the meat. I too love some fast food but I plan to eat at home as much as possible with the baby...we'll see. I just want to avoid one of those pain in the butt kids that will only eat McDonalds.

Fast food isn't good for you when you are not pregnant let alone pregnant. I do admit though at least once every 3 weeks I cheat and have it. There are so many easy meals you can make that take no time at all. Do a Google search for 20 minute meals, you should find some stuff there you like.

You don't have to be a cook to prepare a meal. I am a terrible cook, but I can make pork and chicken - all you do is throw it in the oven. Put together a few sides and you have dinner. For example, last night dinner took me half an hour to make. I put some chicken breasts in the over for half an hour, heated up some baked potatoes and opened a can of spinach.
Fast food everyday is not healthy for anyone, especially for growing children, not to mention it's very expensive. Cooking is very easy if you give it a try.

My family has become a fast food nation. If it's not Pizza Hut, McDonald's, Wendy's, or anywhere I can get a STEAK; I wont eat. This "change" happened over night. I've never been a cooker, and I'm almost allergic to groceries store. Normally my daughter & I eat meal at my moms, but she rarely cooks anymore. ALL SUGGESTING ARE WELCOME.
