Keeping the air moving around with an overhead fan dramatically reduced the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) by 72 percent, researchers reported.
The research, out of Kaiser Permanente in Oakland, California, appears in the October issue of Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.
Senior author Dr. De-Kun Li, a reproductive and perinatal epidemiologist, reports that the mothers of 185 infants who died of SIDS were compared to 312 randomly selected infants. The infants were matched by location, age and race.

I have a baby that sweats a whole lot and she sleps so much better with a ceiling fan on. Makes me wonder why she sweats so much now... must have gotten that from her daddy!

The rule with the ceiling fan has nothing to do with SIDS. You are told to not use a ceiling fan with a newborn when it is cool or cold because the additional air flow causes baby to lose precious body heat.
With a newborn in cool temperatures you should use a directional fan that you can keep pointed away from where baby sleeps.
Once baby is older they can regulate their body temps better and it doesn't matter anymore.

hmmm, im not sure i get the SIDS connection. i think the fan is fine as long as baby isnt too hot or too cold.

We sleep with the ceiling fan on and Jamie sleeps in the room with us and she is just fine. She actually sleeps better with it on because it gets hot in our room.

Our kids have all 3 slept with a ceiling fan for years! Why would it be dangerous?
