1 beef roast (appx. 2 1/2 - 3 lbs)--the cheaper the cut, the better! 1 packet lipton onion soup mix 1 can cream of chicken soup
Put roast in crockpot (5-6 qt works best), pour soup over, sprinkle dry soup mix over, cover and cook on low about 8-10 hours
Makes a super-tender roast with a fantastic gravy! I serve with mashed potatoes and a veggie, or shred meat, place back in gravy and serve over egg noodles.

I made this last night, and it was really good. I don't like boiled chicken because it turns out soggy. I put it in the fridge overnight, and tastes a lot better.
This is from a cookbook, "One-Armed Cook" Quick and savvy advice for new (and not-so-new) moms
Asian Chicken Drumsticks servings:6 Preparation time:10 Start to finish: 5 hours, 10 min.
1/2 cup soy sauce or tamari 1/3 cup brown sugar 1 tsp. bottled chopped garlic 1 (8 oz) can tomato sauce 6 skinless chicken drumsticks with thighs attached
1. In the bottom of a 3 1/2 quart or larger, slow cooker, place all of the ingredients except for the chicken, stirring well to mix.
2. Add chicken; stir to coat with the sauce.
3. Cover and cook on low for 5 hours.
If skinless quarters aren't available, purchase one package of skinless drumsticks and one package of skinless thighs.
I put in 5 instead of 6 because my crock pot isn't that big. Still tasted really good.

I'd pull mine out but they are saying we will get up to 10 inches of snow and they are already saying power outages. Not like it will work that way. LOL I might have to grill in the snow. Our whole house is electric!

I wish I had a crock pot - although I find it hard enough to remember to get meat out of the freezer let alone get everything prepared 6 hours in advance!! LOL

tomorrow i am going to do vegetable beef soup.
islandmum, you can probably double the recipe or just make the smaller one and it will cook fine. i find different crock pots have different cook times. i find mine slower than my moms but it may be just cause mine was her old one she passed down.

OK, I have some questions before I try the slowcooker out. I found a great jambalaya recipe that I am going to try (i'll post it if it is good :) but the recipe is measured for a 3.5 qt and we have the larger 6 qt crockpot.
My question(s)... 1) can I just double the recipe to fit in the larger pot?
2) can I make smaller meals in the larger pot?? If I do this would the cooking times be different??
I am heading out grocery shopping soon for the meal tomorrow night so if someone could help me out soon that would be great! Thanks.

I've got a 5-qt, I had a 6-qt (dumb heating element went out last week), & a 1-qt.
If you're looking for small meals for a family of 3, a smaller one is fine (maybe 2.5 qt?).
If you like leftovers, go ahead & get the bigger one. It's also nice to have a bigger one when you're entertaining.
Mine are all the dial ones with 4 settings: High, Low, Keep Warm, & Off They work great, and I wouldn't trade them for anything!

Wow, this group really is great LOL. My DH and I have been talking about buying a slow cooker for awhile because we have heard they are great to have but up until this point we haven't really seen any exciting recipes. We were specifically looking for chicken recipes since we don't eat pork or beef and there are some really great recipes posted in this thread.
My question, when buying a slowcooker what should we be looking for?? There is only my DH, me and our DS so is it worth is to buy the bigger 6 qt one or would the smaller traditional one be big enough (keep in mind we love to have leftovers to bring for lunch the next day).
Also, should we look for the simple dial one or is it worth it to buy the fancy digital type slow-cookers?
Any tips would be great. Sorry if these questions have already been answered in this thread. I didn't have time to read through the whole thing.

Thanks for bumping this Sasha! Realized I never posted my reuben dip recipe. Here it is:
Crock-pot Reuben Dip
8 oz. corned beef, coarsely chopped 1 cup sauerkraut, rinsed, well drained 1 (8-oz. pkg) cream cheese, softened 2 cups shredded Swiss cheese 1/2 cup thousand island salad dressing
Mix all ingredients in 1-1/2-3 qt. crock pot. Cover crock pot and cook on low for 4 hours.
Stir to combine and scrape down sides.
Serve with party rye bread slices.
My note: I usually triple the recipe for large gatherings & use my 6qt crock pot.

Taco meat recipe
1 lb boneless skinless chicken boobs 1 can of chicken broth 1 packet of Taco seasoning
Put it all in the crock pot and set on low for six hours. Remove chicken and shred with fork. Replace into crock pot and mix with all the flavorful goodness inside.
If you feel adventerous- you can add some of your favorite salsa, or layer the bottom of the crock pot with some onion, or add hot peppers. You really can't mess it up.

Here's a homemade baked beans recipe too...
Soak a bag of navy beans in a large bowl overnight. (They will swell quite a bit)The next morning, drain and place in crock pot.
Add one piece cubed pork, small pieces 1/2 cup ketchup 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/8 cup yellow mustard
Combine the ingredients, and add water to cover the mixture plus one inch. Leave on low for 6-8 hours.

I love using my crockpot!! Especially on cold days.
Cheddar Chowder
2 cups boiling water 2 cups diced potatoes 1/2 cup chopped cauliflower 1/2 cup diced celery 1/4 cup chopped onions 1/2 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. pepper 1/4 cup low-cal margarine 1/4 cup flour 2 cups shredded low-fat cheddar 1 cup cubed lean ham
Heat water in a large pot. Add the potatoes, cauliflower, celery, onion, salt and pepper to boiling water. Cover and cook over med-high heat for 10 minutes. Do not drain!
In a med sized sauce pan, melt margarine then add flour. Slowly add milk while whisking mixture. Allow the sauce to thicken, then remove from heat. Slowly stir in the cheddar until melted, add ham cubes and stir.
Transfer mixture to crockpot. Add veggie mixture and stir well. Leave on low heat for a few hours or until ready to eat.

BBQ Pork
Ingredients 1 boneless pork roast 15 whole cloves 1 large onion, sliced 1/2 cup water 1 bottle of barbecue sauce 1 teaspoons sugar
Directions Place onion slices into the bottom of a large crock pot. Dot roast with cloves; place roast in crock pot along with the water. Cover and cook at least 8 hours (or overnight). Take roast from crock pot, remove cloves and shred pork. Discard liquid and onions from crock pot. Place shredded pork, barbecue sauce and sugar in crock pot and cover. Cook at least 2 more hours. Serve on toasted buns.
edited to add- you can just dump the cloves in the crock pot instead of dotting them on the meat. It will save you the time it takes to take them out. I would throw in just a tad extra though...

Okay, this thread has made me want to experiement with my crock-pot. HELP...bought this stuff at the store for chicken, basically seasoning that you add mushrooms, 2 cans of tomatoes and tomato paste. Problem is, the directions did not say anything about precooking the chicken. Is that okay? I just stuck the chicken in a poured the tomato mixture over the chicken...

a quick pan sear to seal in the flavor (don't cook through- just enough so the outside goes from pink to white) then throw 'em in the pot. The temp of a crock pot is hot enough to cook the meat through and kill any bacteria- (but you shouldn't reheat food in a crock pot).

OK, I'll add
Slow-cooker Lemon-Pepper Chicken & Rice
1 bottle lemon pepper marinade (I use Lawry's) 4 boneless-skinless chicken breasts 3 cups rice (I use minute rice brown) 3 cups water
Pour marinade (reserving about 1/2 c.), rice & water in slow-cooker, mix well. Place chicken breasts on top of soupy mixture. Coat top of chicken with remaining marinade. Cook on low about 8 hours.

I made chicken in the crockpot today...I swear I saw the recipe on here, but for the life of me can't find it...It was chicken breast and you pour cream of chicken soup and cheddar cheese soup on top. I seasoned it with salt, pepper and garlic and my family went NUTS! It took about 3 minutes to throw together and the chicken was GREAT! Moist and wonderful! So Thanks to whoever posted it!

Tips and Techniques:
Brown meats and poultry first. Heat a non-stick skillet on medium for a minute or two. Add just enough oil such as canola or vegetable to coat the bottom of the pan. Heat the oil for a minute and add the food to be browned, being sure not to overcrowd the pan. Brown the food evenly on all sides. Although this takes a few extra minutes, it helps to seal the meat, hold in the juices, adds extra flavor and makes it look delicious!
Cut foods of the same type into equal size pieces to ensure even cooking at the same time. If a recipe calls for potatoes, cut them all into, for example, 2-inch chunks. Not some into 1-inch chunks and some into 2-inch chunks. The same principle applies to meats.
Don't peek! Lifting the lid off your slow cooker can result in longer cooking time. Because slow cookers cook at such low temperatures, uncovering it for a minute or two can cause the temperature to drop and the cooking time to increase substantially. If you must peek, do so quickly! If you feel the urge to stir every once in a while, fight it! Unlike stove top or oven cooking, the slow cooker transfers heat evenly to the food without hot spots, so stirring isn't really necessary (unless your recipe happens to call for it).
The low temp and long cooking method of a slow cooker often causes pasta and rice to cook up pasty and starchy, which can be disappointing. So often you will find that recipes call for these items to be cooked separately and added to the finished dish, or added raw about 1 hour before the end of the cooking time.
Your slow cooker is a great appliance to keep hot beverages warm for a prolonged period of time. When it's cold outside, greet guests into your home with the aroma of Harvest Coffee Cider or Mulled Peach Tea Punch keeping warm in the slow cooker. Keep it on the low setting for the perfect temperature.

Slow Cooker Smothered Chicken and Vegetables
3 carrots, sliced 3 stalks celery, sliced 1 large onion, cut into thin wedges 3 cups cubed cooked chicken 1 (10 3/4-ounce) can condensed cream of celery soup 3/4 cup chicken broth Place vegetables in the bottom of slow cooker. Top with chicken. Add soup and broth. (No need to mix). Cover and cook for 4 to 6 hours on low.
I also add 10 tiny new potatoes cut up bite size. Put them on the bottom and then carrots so they will cook. I used a whole can of Italian chicken broth, it give it the perfect spice. Plus I added a second can of cream soup, sometimes I use cream of chicken for the second one. Then the last 30 minutes I add acan of cut green bean and a 1/2 of a small can of green peas.
