No floaties. They use games to get them to do swimming moves. They have them put their faces in the water and blow "fishy bubbles" so they learn not to breath the water in. They play "Get Away Water" to teach them a kind of breast stroke. They have them get rings off of the bottom of the pool to get them comfortable with moving in and putting their bodies under the water-they don't go totally under, they're still in the shallow end for this. They have them jump off the side of the pool into the deep end so they get comfortable going under the water. And they hold them so they can do the kicking and arm motions of swimming. She's in the very beginners class so it's just the basics. My goddaughter is in the next level class and they have her swimming under water. It's a good program and the instructors are pretty good considering they're teenagers. They are the lifeguards at the town pool.

OMG that is hilarious!! Don't come tomorrow, just drop me off! HAHAHA What a stitch! I'm so glad she liked it though! It could have gone horribly worse. What kinds of things did they have them doing? Did they put floaties on them?

MaryJo (and others-don't want to be excluding anyone-LOL)-we took Sabrina for her first swim lesson last night. This little booger....all I will say is she is 99.9% my husband. Other than my sarcasm she gets absolutely nothing from me!!! This same child who will whine about the water in her eyes during her baths not only willingly put her face in the water to blow bubbles and did whatever else the instructor wanted them to do, but she was at the front of the class the whole time, first to volunteer, leading the line of kids as they went to their next stations, etc. At the end of the class their "treat" is to go down the really cool water slide the pool has. Again, Sabrina is the first on line, up the stairs with the instructor, and down they come. The instructor says to us, "Usually they come down on our laps, but she said, 'I'll do it myself!'" Then, we get home and she says, "Don't come tomorrow-just drop me off." OMG!!! Who is this child???? LOL.

Aww thanks Kat!! I am super proud of her! I almost cried. Oh wait, I did get a little teary eyed watching her. She's not the first of the Nov 05 babes to swim completely alone, but I'm still pretty amazed! Baillie has been swimming alone for a while now, but she lived where it's super hot all year long and went swimming every day.
What's amazing about Abigail is that she never had a single lesson. This is all just because of my mom and sister. I never took her to a formal class or a public pool. Just a few months each summer since she was born. Yay Punker Doo!

I hope so too! She really is a fish at heart. It was bitter sweet to watch too. It was so exciting to see her actually doing it, but made me sad too cuz that means it's one more thing she can do alone... My baby is growing up.

I am sooo incredibally excited to tell you all that Abigail swam the entire length of my mother's 25 foot long pool all by herself with NO FLOTATION DEVICES AT ALL!!! She actually swam it several times with my mom right there in case she needed her.
She usually wears a life vest so she can swim and play without having to be held. I think they're much safe than swimmies on her arms.
Anyway, she decided a week or so ago that she wanted to try to swim without it. So I took it off her and taught her to think "kick and paddle" as I said it out loud to her the entire time. She had already been taught how to swim by my younger sister 2 summers ago, so she knew the arm motions, how to kick her feet and how to breath by turning her head to the side. My sis actually taught her all that when she was 18 mos old and she still remembers it. Now she's just learning how to support her own body weight without the vest.
My mom lets her jump off the step of the ladder and then encourages her to kick and paddle and that is what she did. I couldn't believe it! Then she did it again and again, so it wasn't a fluke thing. I even went inside to get my little sister and the camera. I have a video clip on my sister's camera of her actually swimming all by her self!!! She's only 3 years old!! My baby's a fish!
