My understanding is that contractions are supposed to start a few hours after your water brakes, but they usually induce you if nothing happens within 24 hours, because of the increased risk of infection. They will make you wait at home, though.
Good luck, and let us know...

Gabriela was born October 19, 2005. I have a 7 year old son.
In the picture Gaby is 4 and a half months old.

your water broke and they sent you home? that seems odd to me. Is that common practice??

I'm one day overdue and still no real contractions to write home about. I had show and waters broke this morning. Been to the hospital but they sent me home with some instructions in case anything worrying happens. I'm scheduled to be induced on Monday if nothing else happens. Fingers crossed this baby shows up soon! Good luck all!

I get weird feeling at night, But they feel more like my muscles stretching and or menstrual cramps. I'm definately going to ask the midwife on monday if she'll check me.

my dr. keeps insisting that the horrible period cramps I've been getting aren't contractions, you say they very well can be? That would be a huge relief!!! I'm 50% effaced and 1cm dialted at 38 weeks but they keep saying call us when you get contractions. My cramps are constant not off and on- like one day i'll have cramps for three or four hours non stop... I dont know. This first time stuff is no fun! : )

The Doctor or MidWife (which ever you ladies are seeing) should offer you a dialation check or ripening check at 37 weeks, its optional though, if they haven't offered it to you ask them to do it and they shouldnt have a problem with it. My midwife has checked me almost every week since the beginning of September when I started having contractions. When I first started having them they felt like menstrual cramps and nothing really seemed to help them go away, if you get to worried about it you can always go to the hospital and say that you are worried and would like to be checked because you haven't felt anything for awhile and they have no choice but to take you in and to check you. But at first they feel like menstrual cramps and then they will get stronger even if they are braxton hicks they hurt, my little girl has put me in the hospital 4 times thinking that I was in labor because the contractions hurt so bad.
GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF YOU !!!!!!!! STAY STRONG!!!

Hi ladies,
Supposed to be due tomorrow but I haven't been feeling a lot of BH or any signs of labor yet. Went shopping hoping the walk would help start something, but zilch, except for a mild migraine for looking at baby clothes! LOL I guess LO wants a little more time in there. Oh well.. Good luck to all expecting moms!

no one's checking me either - I asked at my last appointment and she said in a couple of weeks. I guess they don't check until the week before. I mean it doesn't really matter can things can happen over night.
I'm feeling like this baby will probably be late - I'm still feeling good, a little nauseau but otherwise no real strong BH or cramping. I don't have that I want this thing out of me feeling yet.
Oh well I'm going to a wedding out of town this weekend - maybe I will dance it out

I’m 38 weeks and not much is going on… I had some heavy BH back during the hurricanes but nothing now. I’m about ¼ cm dilated with a thick cervix. My doula suggested that I try to things to help me ripen my cervix…. Evening primrose oil helps (taken both orally and as a vaginal suppository) Blue cohosh is a great natural source of pitocin. I started taken one capsule with each meal. In any case, if all else fails there’s always sex… I always thought it was the “orgasm” that put you in labor… but come to find out the sperm actually help in softening the cervix.

Meweg---- Hey at least you know if our dilated. No one at my clinic even checks. All they do is test my weight and blood pressure and listen to the baby's heartbeat. So, I have no idea whats going on. I have been feeling kinda crampy though. They never last too long, and happen mostly at night. But every time, I send all these mental communications to my baby like "ok, anytime your ready" or "move towards the earth...." I hope its helping!

I too am worried that I havent felt any contractions yet. I am 38 weeks, 50% effaced and 1 cm dialted but nothing! I have lots of cramping and god can I feel him on my bottum and my g spot (sorry I"m sure its too much info but first time mommies we dont know what the hell is going on!) the dr. said that my unterus is still too doughy to be contracting :( He's the one with the degree I just wished I heard better news at my visit.

You will know the difference between braxton hicks and real labor contraction. BH you can walk off and talk through, labor you don't want to move or talk or be spoken to as they progress.

Hi, I have 12 days left and still no sign of contractions. I had some weird pain though, like period pain. It happended 3 times so far, the last time was last Saturday. I went shopping in a few different places and I was very tired, my tummy was sore so I had to go and sit in the car while my BF finished shopping.

I had my strep test a week ago but no one checked to see if I'm dilated or not. As far as orgasms go though, sex isn't really something that I enjoy lately. I'm too preoccupied with thoughts of baby. I guess i shouldn't worry too much about false labor. Like you said I'll know when I'm in labor. But thanx for all the ideas/

I didn't think I had BH contractions with either of my first two, but looking back I guess I probably did. I thought that they were just "full body movement" when I was pregnant with my daughter. I know I have had them this time around since around 26 weeks or so though. Some days I get more than others. I also remember when I was in labor, they hooked me up and said that what I was feeling was a contraction. I wasn't even feeling anything at the time! I can't remember if that was with my son or daughter.

i have found that the best way to feel what a contraction feels like is to have an orgasm...then you can feel exactly where your uterus is, then you can feel it soften under your fingertips......

if nothing else you will have exercised your uterus, put some oxytoxins (and endorphins) into your system and given your baby some "feel good" hormones *grin*

good luck!

Sorry, you aren't happy with your care. Haven't you had a strep B test yet? I had mine at almost 37 weeks and that is when my midwife checked me. I bet your a little dilated by now. Hopefully they will check soon.

Nope, everytime I go to the midwife all she does is use the sonogram to listen to the babys heartbeat. I think I spend more time in the freakin waiting room than in the room with her or my doctor. I feel kinda disappointed with the care i've recieved so far. And the birth class was a joke. Luckily I have thousands of years of evolution to rely on as far as birthing knowledge, otherwise I'd be screwed!

Don't worry. You could very well be having contractions and not feeling them yet. That is how I usually am. That crampy feeling you have been having at nights sounds like beginning contractions. Have you been checked for dilation yet? I am sure your body is getting ready.

So, I keep hearing about all these women getting braxton hicks contractions and I really don't think I've gotten any yet. Its weird, I'm at 37 weeks now and my breasts are starting to excrete a little bit of colostrum so you'd think I'd be getting contractions too.. The only thing is, at night sometimes I can feel some pressure on my cervix, and kinda crampy. Is that a contraction? Maybe i'm not walking enough? its just so hard at this point because I've gained sooo much weight that it kills my back to do much exersize....
