Don't have any answers for you just sympathy. Mine does it too. Although unlike yours mine has never been a good sleeper. My son will sometimes sleep through the night but then other nights he's up for up to 4hrs!!! singing, talking, counting whatever (usually not crying.) I've just been reading about how some gifted children sleep less. I wonder if this is the case for us as he's waaaaay ahead in terms of vocabulary etc. Seems like whenever he accomplishes another milestone or gets "obsessed" with something (a book or something) that's when he's up at night talking to himself about it. LOL.

I just shut off the monitor, close the door to his room and mine, and run a fan in my room for white noise and I sleep. I've given up trying to figure it out. Sometimes he's grumpy the next day from not enough sleep, other times he's fine. If he's grumpy he goes for a nap a little early. Like you we tried changing bedtimes and nap times etc. and it made absolutely no difference.

ETA He also has a dairy sensitivity and we have made a connection between giving him dairy and him being awake at night as well but this isn't the cause all the time because there's times he's been up when he hasn't had dairy too. Usually if it's dairy related the sleepless night is followed by a huge poop explosion the next day. Taking dairy out of his diet has made a big improvement in the number of nights he's up but hasn't eliminated it all together.

Our son has always been a very good sleeper. Since he was little we would lay him down awake and he would fall asleep. Recently that has changed. We still have the same routine that we have always followed but once we lay him down he will play in his crib for up to 2 hours! He will sing, jump, & talk to himself. At first we would just go in there and tell him to be quiet but sometimes that got him even more excited and then he would sing louder so we came in him room. We then tried staying in the room with him and as soon as he started talking we would tell him to be quiet and go to sleep - that worked for a little while but now we are standing in his room with him for hours! We know we are lucky that he isn't in there screaming but we are worried he isn't getting enough sleep at night (oh we have also tried moving his bedtime up/back slightly and that didn't change a thing). We are now wondering if we should just let him stay in there and play!?! Any advice is appreciated! Sorry for the long question.
