well, our little bundle arrived march 5, and oh my!! she is just amazing!! the hives started dwindling away during the last month of my pregnancy, and that relief was much needed since i really began to "blossom" in other areas during that last month! haha! this is no lie, but 15 minutes after scout was born, my back started breaking out in hives again! the nurse got me some zyrtec, which i was still taking every night anyways...but they just got progressively worse. a week later, i was just miserable...covered from head to toe...my eye and lips were even swollen. the dr called in a prednisone prescription for me. that helped for a couple of days, but then they started easing back. another week later, i woke up with a fever, cough, and covered again...head to toe...all over my face, and had swollen lips again. my husband took me to the dr and he prescribed, more prednisone, more zyrtec, tagamet, and atarax. the following day, they were all gone!! that all happened on monday...it's wednesday night and i'm still all clear!! the first time i've been clear since august! amazing! thank you, Lord!! tomorrow, i'm supposed to call the dr and he is going to gradually take me off the medication. so we'll see what happens. i KNOW it is hormonal. i had to quit breast-feeding it got so bad. so i know once my milk dries up, these hives will go away. that's what i'm hoping anyways.
my advice to any of you going through this. hang in there until after your baby comes. it's awful, i know, but i doubt there is any drug that they can give you other than zyrtec while you are pregnant. that helped me a TON! and prescription lotion..betameth/lubriderm. none of my dr's wanted to do anything for me during my pregnancy...the drugs were too risky. so just hang in there until you have your bundle of joy...and anxiously await your hive-free days that lie ahead...i assure you, you will be ITCH free!!! :)
if you have ANY questions or just need to talk to someone who has been there/done that...please email me!! i'd love to talk to you! carlacarter@charterinternet.com

well, here i am...nearly 4 months later and still battling the hives! it's crazy...but zyrtec and a lotion prescription is what has gotten me through. but, if any area of my body gets hot, like from sitting in a chair, or wearing a warm sweater, i break out. it's nutz! i really didn't think they would last this long...i'm so hoping it is pregnancy related, bc that would mean i will only have them for a few more months!
it's interesting to hear the others of you talk about having them, because everybody that i have told just can't believe it until i show them...they all say they have never heard of anyone getting hives while they are pregnant! well, i'm hear to tell you that it HAPPENS! HAHA! i'm ready to write a book about it at this point! HAHA!
happy "no itchy days" to all of you!! :)

I am 8 weeks pregnant and I have had hives for 4 1/2 weeks. So far the most help has been zyrtek 10mg (prescription). They aren't as intense as they have been. good luck!

My dr's told me...our bodies are just reacting to something it doesn't agree with..whether it's a pregnancy hormone or what..i don't know.

Poor thing! Been there. I had the hives and then also a rough bout (head to toe, thick,) with poison ivy. My dr & Dermatoligist were both baffled as well..Mine eventually went away i believe in the 3rd trimester. I got a cortisone cream mixed by the pharmacy, had menthol and other cooling additives to help alleviate the itch as well..it was the best thing I used. I ended up while having the poison ivy..on a steroid MEDROL dose pack. It's maddening I know..i can't even tell you how much I cried. Believe it or not...9 months from now..you won't even remember you went through it. I know that doesn't help at the moment. Ask about a cortisone cream and ask the pharmacy for compounding other stuff into it...that's what worked the best for me.

oh, i feel your pain! and ITCH! haha!
i am 14 weeks pregnant now...my hives started at 10 weeks. i am miserable. the doctor seemed baffled by them, so he sent me to a dermatologist. he knew right off that it was hives. he prescribed zyrtec, allegra, and some prescription lotion. all of which have eased the itching. i ran out of the zyrtec prescription 2 nights ago, and today, the hives are the worst yet. i have tried cold compresses, but that doesn't make me want to do anything but cover up in a blanket...but then the heat makes it worse...so it's a catch-22! haha! i am just praying they don't last my entire pregnancy!! i hope yours are better soon! :)

You should speak to your doctor. But it could be related to hormone changes, or nerves or stress...You may want to track what you are eating too, just in case you are having a new reaction to something now that you are pregnant.

Good luck and I hope you find a solution soon - I'm sure they are not fun!

I have never heard of that. Have you talked to your doctor about this?
