Check out the Resource Center - Nutrition Information...there are articles on "Playing it Safe..." dealing with caffeine, fish and seafood, herbs...It is a great place to start.

Congratulations.

hi Iam a new to-be-mom due in may, my first, and I mostly eat healthy food, but I was wondering if too much or too less of something is bad. Also, I love my iced mocha's and I heard that you shouldn't drink too much caffine while pregnant, so I cut down to about 2 a week, but is that still too much or how much is too much. Working a graveyard shift in a nursing home can make you tired, so my mochas help me stay awake. Please let me know, thanks.

My husband was reading in one of our pregnancy books the other night that raspberry tea can cause early labor or miscarriages. I will ask him what book that was in and get back to you guys. So use caution it might not be safe.

The only Tazo Teas I'm drinking these days are the Wild Sweet Orange, Passion, and Refresh. All 3 are made of either fruits, mint leaves, or flowers.

There's some recent research that says the antioxidants (which are really good for you when you're not pregnant) in both green and black tea can interfere w/ folic acid absorption. Folic acid is believed to prevent neural tube defects like spina bifida. The spinal cord develops primarily in the first trimester. There wasn't a suggestion of a safe amount, but there's probably nothing wrong with a serving a day. To be on the safe side, I cut out all green/black/chai tea in the first trimester. I make tea by the gallon, and it was easier to not tempt myself by keeping it around.

I had an ultrasound at 14 weeks. They could already tell that the spinal cord was fully fused. I'm not as worried about it now and have started having a cup of hot tea every now and then.

the peperment and chamomile are fine. The raspberry should be OK, unless there are other added ingredients I should check on...
Please understand...I am NO way an expert on this subject, but I do have the 6-inch reference book that contains pages of research on almost every herb.

I'm learning alot too!!

By the way, I looked up the ingredients on several more herbal teas, and LOTS of them contain hibiscus and lemongrass. This includes Orange & Spice Tea by Bigelow and Sleepy Time and Lemon Zinger teas from Celestial Seasonings.

No idea. My doc said she was not familiar, so she could not weigh in. Anyone have any information?

Becky, thanks so much for checking. It looks like the only thing that is safe is chamomile and peppermint/spearmint tea. Is that true?

NOT SAFE...in fact 3 of the ingredients, Hibiscus, lemon grass and licorice, can be a menstrual stimulant, uterine contractions/stimulation, abortions, stimulate menstrual flow, steroid effects.

I hope most of the Tazo Teas are okay, because I enjoy them from time to time. I think as long as you aren't drinking more than 1-2 8 oz glasses a day, you are more than likely fine.

I would be careful about anything containing unfamiliar herbs, or those not endorsed by the FDA as safe. There are so many that are largely unknown by the medical community. I do know that licorice is a no-no while pregnant.
