Thank you for posting. I am so glad that you discussed this with your doctor FIRST and that you encourage others to do the same BEFORE using Lysine.

There is insufficient reliable information available on the safety of using Lysine during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

In fact, you can go to and see that it receives a risk category of C. This means that studies on animals do show adverse effect and toxicity on fetus, OR there is no adequate and well controlled studies done on pregnant women. Lysine should be given only if the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk to the fetus.

Your doctor has determined that it is appropriate for you to use Lysine, this may not be appropriate for others....remember to always check first with your doctor.

I thought I'd create a separate topic to address the safety issues (or lack thereof) of taking the amino acid supplement l-Lysine while pregnant. I have suffered from painful cold sores since I was a child, and the only lasting remedy that Iíve found is taking regular doses of l-Lysine supplements on a daily basis. When I first became pregnant, I consulted my doctor on the safety of continuing this regimen throughout my pregnancy, and he assured me that I had nothing to worry about.

I post now because Iíve been reading so many posts on this site (and many others) that warn against using this supplement while pregnant (l-Lysine has also shown to have a preventive effect on vaginal herpes outbreaks as well). Even though Iíd been given the official go-ahead from my OBGYN, I was frightened by all the ďdonít do itĒ posts. So, I called and re-confirmed today (with an entirely different doctor this time) that it is still perfectly fine to take the l-Lysine supplement on a regular basis while pregnant, without any risk of harm to my baby.

Of course, I would encourage everyone to contact their own OBGYN for their own professional opinions as well. I just wanted to submit an l-Lysine post that wasnít so frightening.

Happy expecting to all!
