Hops can be used to start uterine contractions however it's not really very strong. Also if that babe isn't done cooking yet then unfortunately he/she needs a little more time before he/she is golden brown and crispy. LOL
All kidding aside, yes there are tons of ways to induce but if you and your body are not ready yet then there is not a whole lot you can do.
A list of the few common ones are:
Sex-the prostaglandin in the semen helps soften and "ripen" the cervix. Also when the women reaches that uhhh moment (don't want to say the "O" word and get someone offended) oxytocin is released through her body which is also known to start contractions.
Reflexology-Certain areas of the body are known to trigger uterine contractions. Seek a licensed massage therapist by AMTA (American Massage Therapist Association) who specializes in prenatal masssage.
Castor Oil-Doesn't always work and is very messy afterwards. The only reason this supposedly works is because this triggers strong spasmodic cramping of your intestines which are right around your uterus.
Nipple Stimulation-Produces naturally occuring oxytocin which is known to start or intensify contractions.
For more just read The thinking womens guide to a better birth.
As for the raspberry leaf tea, this is one that I have read is better for toning the uterus, not as much for inducing labor. It was used long ago as well as now a days for women who were pregnant. It's very important not to use this until the last trimester.
The end.
Tam

Did anyone hear of drinking a beer to start labor? My mom's friend told her this. I would rather wait than drink a beer!!!

Hot baths and hot tubs are quite dangerous for the baby. Raising your body temperature and that of the baby can cause brain damage (from what I've read and talked with the Doc about). I do not suggest you try that method.

I actually heard the opposite about HOT baths...I dont know if it is true or not but they say it is not good...My husbands aunt did that and she was told by her doc that, that was not a good idea..I could call her and ask her why...I dont recall her telling me why...maybe she did and I forgot...
U could also ask your doc..please dont just try anyting...especially something likethat, without asking your doc..because who knows really!!

I did have a vaginal delivery. My doctor said I had a 50/50 chance of delivering vaginally and I was able to, but with being induced I had to have an epideral (even though I didn't want one going into it), the contractions were only 30 seconds apart and very strong, my body couldn't dialate because it couldn't rest, as soon as I got my epideral, I went from 1 cm to 10 cm in 4 hours and my son was born after 30 mins of pushing.

I actually was induced on my due date because I had gained about 10 pounds of water weight that week and my blood pressure was really high, so my doctor was worried about preeclampsia. Honestly I was really scared going into it, but it wasn't so bad. It was kind of nice knowing when he was going to be born, plus it went really fast, I was only in labor for about 6 hours.

I know these last few days are really hard, but by the time your baby is born, you will probably forget all about them.

It doesn't hurt to try some of these things, who knows, they may work for you. I just wasn't lucky enough.

Annie did you have a vaginal delivery after you had to be induced? How long after your due date did you deliver? I am at my wits end but if he is not ready he is just not ready and nothing I can do can change that I guess!

I tried everything with my son: sex, raspberry leaf tea, spicey foods, walking, massage, pressure points, nothing got labor started, I had to be induced, but I think the only thing that even helped at all was having sex. There is actually something in semen that helps, it is actually what is in the gel they give you if you are not effaced and dialated enough to start an induction, but it is just in lower concentrations, I guess that is why you need to do it at least 5x's a week. Good luck, I remember trying everything, I hope one of them works for you.

My due date was yesterday. I have no contractions and he does not feel close to dropping. I go in Thursday for an US to see what is going on. I have been having sex, drinking the tea since 34 weeks, doing the excercise ball (in place of walking, no chance to do a lot of it)and now my doula has me using my breast pump to stimulate my nipples. After my appt. on Thursday I am going to try the raspberries, cod liver oil(I have a friend that used this recipe and started labor for all 3 of her children)and the massage points on the ankle, foot and shoulders. If I do not have this baby by Monday I am just going to blame it on the fact he does not want to come out until spring when it is warmer.

reflexology is something that helps the swelling of legsa and the circulation and blood flow...if u decide to do reflexoglgy, u MUST have something that is trained to work ON pregnant women..because there is a right way and wrong way..and it can in fact send u into labor if not done for pregnant women...
but reflexology is proven to be very effective in helping pregnant women with swelling..even had it on the news last year...

There is a place on your foot that will stimulate labor, but I don't know much about it. Anyone into reflexology?

Jill,
Not yet...LOL...but should be soon enough...I am in no rush..I am coming down with a cold..and I am not hoping I get better before delivering. My son and husband had it..and I thought to myself, I am lucky..and all of a sudden I wake up with a soar throat...I already went to the doc because I was so worried about being sick and having a baby..and what happens if I am sick...and they went over everything with me...made me feel much better..I actually almost cried but had to contain myself. I am a mush these days...
How are u otherwise? Feeling good? Sleeping well?

I hate indian food. I should try to eat some of that when I get closer to my due date. My luck I will get just the runs and no baby LOL But if I do go into labor there wont be any need for an enema or worry of pooping on the table lol

The day I went into labor I was soooo ready!
I was a week over due and scheduled to be induced that week. I didnt want to be induced, so tried all kinds of things.
On the day my water broke I had sex, went for a long walk, drank raspberry leaf tea AND ate a big bowl of fresh raspberries (someone on line said this was her trick), ate a jalapino bagel (spicy food is a trick someone suggested), I cleaned my house, massaged my nipples...
Then when I finally relaxed at the end of the day... Poof! My water broke.
Im sure my baby was just ready (past ready), but like I said, I was really ready and willing to try almost anything. I can totally relate!!!
Best of luck!
Deanna

Drink Castor oil? Burn sage? There are a ton of wive's tales. Best way is to wait it out and let the baby come when the baby wants to. Sucks, I know. They tend to do things in their own good time.

I'll be posting this exact thread in about 25 days myself! Only 32 days to go.
