So far I have had a kidney infection and 2 UTI's during this pregnancy. Instead of keep going back to treat this my doc has me on a low dose of macrodatin, a similar antibiotic to macrobid to prevent any further UTI's. She let me know that his is safe and in the best interest of my health and the babies.. I have to take the pill every day until 38 weeks, after that I was told to no longer take it. I hope this helps, antibiotics aren't always the best thing but if there is an infection it is definitely safer to take what the doc prescribes.
Good luck with everything.

When I was 6 weeks pregnant I got the news of my first bladder infection and had to take the same medicine. At 10 weeks I had the same problem. Don't worry it is safe and like it has been said before we are more prone to these infections during pregnancy. The medicine made me absolutely sick and gave me bad diarhea but I suffered through and now I am clean. Just make sure to drink plenty of water to flush the system.
Good Luck

I had to take antibiotics too, I was about 6 weeks pregnant. When I got the prescription from the doctor I asked if it was ok and he said yes, plus he said he is not giving me a big strong dose, so it was fine. But he also told me not to go to pick up my prescription because he wants to double check with another co-worker. He then called me and said that prescroption was ok. When I was in pharmacy, I double checked and it was fine. I guess we have to trust the doctors plus they can not give you a prescription and hurt you or the baby... unless they want to be sued.

Just to relieve your anxieties. Nitofurantoin, generic name Macrobid is only contraindicated in the third trimester of pregnancy. Other wise it is safe to take. When a culutre is done with lab specimens like a UTI different antibiotics are grown in a culture plate to see which one will be the most effective to attack and clear out the infection. Rest at ease you and your baby are fine.

When one has an infection during pregnancy it is important to take medication to get rid of the infection. Women seem to be more prone to developing a UTI during pregnancy too. To put your mind at ease call the doctor and discuss the medication. Do drink plenty of water 6-8 glasses daily to flush the urinary tract...this is also good advice to prevent UTI too. You may also want to check out safefetus.com for additional into on medications during pregnancy and breastfeding.

I was on antibiotics at about 9 weeks. I had a sinus infection. My brother in law is a pharmacist and they way he described it was that if taking the drugs outweighs the not taking it...then it's better to take it. like with an infection...if not treated could spread and cause more problems.

The fact is, NO antibiotics are truly safe to take while pregnant. Antibiotics, if taken when not necessary will try to harm the baby since it is foreign to it. Basically the antibiotic could think of the baby as an infection. But when you have an actual infection, the medicine will target that instead of the baby. And in cases when you get antibiotics, it is more important to get rid of the infection than let it go.
I was on antibiotics twice during this pregnancy. Once for my ear infection and then again in my second trimester because of infections in my teeth. The one for my teeth I was prescribed twice within a few weeks and both times I took it for a week. My infection was so bad that novocaine wouldn't take. So in order to do the root canal, I had to lessen the infection so I could get numb. (What a fun 6 weeks that was!!)
Anyway, I don't think there's a need to worry. I had antibiotics 3 times, and novocaine, and my baby and I are perfectly fine.

Doctor's have a book of prescriptions that are ok to take while pregnant. I had a nasty ear infection when I was just a few weeks pregnant and it said the same thing, but everything obviously turned out ok. The best thing to do is call the doctor for reassurance. Better safe than sorry.

Hi! I am VERY early into my 2nd pregnancy (my LMP was 5/5 and I am probably only about 2 1/2 weeks). Yesterday my dr. confirmed that I was pregnant, but also that I have an UTI. She prescribed Macrobid (Microbid?) because I am pregnant and it was 'safe'. However, when I picked the Rx up, the notes inside said "take only if absolutely necessary when pregnant." I did not talk to the parmacist about this because I was already home when I read it. Anyone know anything? Thanks!
